Your opinion on this opportunity's difficulty?
-
I'm building a tool for mechanical engineers, and I'm trying to find 10 low-competition keywords to target in my first few content marketing efforts. I've got a lot of maneuvering room, so (with a bit of expert advice) I bet I'll be able to find some low-hanging fruit. Here's what I've found:
Most keywords are seem to have about 40% difficulty.
- What's the highest level of SEOmoz "keyword difficulty" that a new website should reasonably try for?
Some ranking high-authority pages are don't appear to be targeted at the term
- Is it fair to say that I could beat any page with less than a 'C' ranking for on-page optimization? (Assuming I target the term with general best practices)*
Thanks!
If you're interested, here is my current process:
- Go on engineering blogs for keywords
- Use Wordstream's Keyword Suggestion Tool for ideas around it
- Use Google Keyword Tools for keywords above 50 searches in direct match
- Use SEOmoz Keyword difficulty report, looking more deeply at keywords under <50%
- If I can find a top 10 page that's less than 30PA and less than 40DA, or has less than 'C' ranking for on-page optimization, I consider the keyword achievable within 3mo, using general best practices.
*Except for YouTube/Wikipedia/etc

Gotcha - thanks!
You're absolutely right, engineers do tend to overthink things. I've realized that it's hard to get a sense of the optimal thinking/doing ratio in a given situation. When designing bridges, it's very different than when hitting a baseball. I'm not very good at either of those (don't worry - I attempt either of them either!)
I've launched the site, but as you recommended, I won't go wild publicizing it until it's got a critical mass of great content.
Thanks,
-matt

I think that you are putting way too much analysis into this. (Engineers tend to do such things
Here is my suggestion....
Go build your kickass tool. Place it on a page with a title tag and optimization that describe that tool perfectly.
Be sure that you explain it clearly and perfectly. Be sure that it works flawlessly (Engineers will pick at very tiny problems
When it is ready for use and for other engineers (who will try to break it) then share the URL with some engineers who blog. Share it on a couple of engineering forums.
If your tool is really valuable then taking the steps above will be like throwing gasoline on a fire. You will have people calling and emailing to ask if they can have the calculations so they build the same tool on their own sites. People will be writing to you asking you to explain the calculations.
Don't launch prematurely. You will get their good attention the first time but not on a relaunch or a repair.
Good luck.
(I hope that you already have some highly related content and content that supports people who will use this tool. If they see your tool AND other information then your site can become a "go to place" for that topic. If you don't have other related and supporting information try to get it ASAP... preferably before launch.)

Why would I be ranking for a term when it's not anywhere in my page or pages linking to it?
Hi, I have a keyword that's not anywhere in my page in page-grade tool nor are any pages linking to it with that term, why would that be ranking. The term is "dynamic card solution" This is a company we used to have 5 years ago and merged with our company. This term is ranking #1 for this page- http://www.datacard.com/instant-issuance-solutions . I can't figure why that would be even as this is a newer page in the past year. Thanks for any insight as I'm newer to moz. Laura

I have a duplicate content on my Moz crawler, but google hasn't indexed those pages: do I still need to get rid of the tags?
I received an urgent error from the Moz crawler that I have duplicate content on my site due to the tags I have. For example: http://www.1forjustice.com/graves-amendment/ The real article found here: http://www.1forjustice.com/car-accident-rental-car/ I didn't think this was a big deal, because when I looked at my GWT these pages weren't indexed (picture attached). Question: should I bother fixing this from an SEO perspective? If Google isn't indexing the pages, then am I losing link juice? 6c2kxiZ

Does SEOmoz have a Keyword Research tool similar to, say, the Google AdWords tool or the WebCEO Keyword Research Tool? And where might that be? (Sorry, I'm very new to SEOmoz Pro.)
I'm looking for an SEOmoz version of the classic WebCEO Keyword Research that would give you effective suggestions based on a keyword inquiry. I've made the switch from WebCEO, but I'm trying to find something similar to that Keyword Research tool. Am I going to just need to use the Google AdWords tool for this function or does SEOmoz have it's own version?

Meaning of Keyword difficulty
Before joining SEOMoz I used to calculate Keyword difficulty with my own method based on keyword density, presence of synonyms, Page rank, title and URL. This seemed to rather well work and I reach 1st page on a fairly regumar basis by picking good difficulty / interest ratio keywords and only onsite optimization. (No link building) I just looked @Keyword analysis in SEOMoz. It seems it is only based on page / site autority. Is this correct? Do you believe keyword and synonym density is irrelevent? Do I need to set back to my home recipe if I want to include keyword analysis in my difficulty assessment ? Thx

Keyword Difficulty Score Not Available
What exactly does this mean? That the service is down? Or the score will never be available? It seems like I get that and then the tool gets stuck and I get no other data.

7 Days into My Account and Only Crawled 3 Pages - What's Happened?
Am I doing something wrong? So far only 3 pages of my site have been crawled - but my account has been live for 7 days. Would it tell me if it was having trouble crawling the rest of the site?

SEOMoz's Crawl Diagnostics showing an error where the Title is missing on our Sitemap.xml file?
Hi Everyone, I'm working on our website Sky Candle and I've been running it as a campaign in SEOmoz. I've corrected a few errors we had with the site previously, but today it's recrawled and found a new error which is a missing Title tag on the sitemap.xml file. Is this a little glitch in the SEOmoz system? Or do I need to add a page title and meta description to my XML file. http://www.skycandle.co.uk/sitemap.xml Any help would be greatly appreciated. I didn't think I'd need to add this. Kind Regards Lewis
