High AdWords Cost with Low Traffic

I'm seeing a lot of keywords with very little traffic but high, sometimes very high cost per click in AdWords.
Can someone explain to me why this is common?
I'm researching buying keywords. With the low traffic they seem like little value but when I see people $20 a click it seems like high converting and thus maybe worth going after. But the high cost is just not making any sense to me for many of these keywords.

Here is an example. It seems to be of little value to rank for:
The word is "tool competition" and has a search volume for exact match is 46 and the CPC is over $17.
However when I google that term I saw no ads on my US or Philippines IP addresses. So I'm GUESSING that there are ads targeting a website of high value. I know very little about AdWords.
Doesn't have much to do with SEO now that I think I figured it out.

I see the results in SE Cockpit which I am pretty sure that they get it direct from AdWords though.
I'm not bidding, I'm trying to evaluate the buying keywords. You know, needle in the hey stack. High CPC with high search and low competiton. (number of competitors is NOT an indication of competition strength. I don't even look at numbers for competition analyse.
I'm mostly curious why I see people paying huge fees so often on keywords that just happen to have low volume. If it was a brand name for their website, I could understand but usually it isn't. I see this a lot, perhaps I'll go dig out an example or two. Looks like I need to.

Cost is based on the competitive market for the keyword, not necessarily on the search volume, so don't let low search volume mislead you as to CPC.
Where are you getting your Cost per Click figures? Google often suggests a much high bid than is required. Also as you drop down in position you can see a significant drop in CPC. Position 1 might be $20. per click, while position 3 might only be $1.25 per click.
Sometimes you do run across a keyword where you can't justify the cost. Just keep looking, there are plenty of other keywords you can consider.

Should i target more low moz keyword difficulty informational keywords?

How can we improve our traffic?
Hi everyone, thanks for taking a look at this. We are looking at improving our traffic for our website. We are a tour company based in Thailand that caters to 18-25 year olds, mainly in the UK and USA. Our site is - http://www.starfishvolunteers.com/ A few years ago the now ex-team hired an SEO company who outsourced to a team in India. Things were considered to be going very well in terms of traffic but I suspect that a lot of it was shady link building tactics. The site was designed poorly, urls were a mess and there was a lot of misinformation on there. Fast forward a few years and there is a new team in place, we redesigned the site, added a blog & booking system, cleared out the misinformation and got ourselves a Moz Pro subscription. I only have Google search stats starting from 2013 and the total traffic (sessions) for that year was roughly 25,000. In 2014 traffic dropped to 19,000 and for the first five month of this year we are currently at 9,000. Obviously reduced traffic doesn't look good and we would very much like to get our numbers back up. We are tracking keywords in Moz and although we are ranking in the top 10 for a bunch of them the traffic just isn't going back up. Here are our thoughts on why we might be losing traffic - We're targeting the wrong keywords. We are being penalised. The competition overtook us. Right now we are at a bit of a loss because we don't know what direction to head in. Could it be our keywords? We would love to know what you think and sincerely appreciate the feedback. We will try and share any data that you think might be relevant or useful.

Organic Keyword Traffic/Strength
Hello! Does anyone have any suggestions to get an accurate search volume on organic traffic? I've been using Google Adwords however there is a big difference in Paid vs. Organic. Moz currently only pulls Bing. Any suggestions much appreciated!! Thank you!

Google Adwords - trying to understand the figures...
Whilst researching keywords I often find the global monthly search on google adwords tool differs, yet the local (UK) is the same (or vice versa) Example: ready mix concrete - global 90,500 & local 18,100 ready mixed concrete - global 60,500 & local 18,100 or forklift truck hire - global 18,100 & local 4,400

forklift truck rental - global 22,200 & local 4,400 I'm making an assumption that for my local country, the phrases ready mix" and "ready mixed" are being treated the same, as are "hire" and "rental" but globally they are not. Am I correct? Of course, they could be two completely separate terms according to Google but coincidentally, have the same search volume. However, I find this happens quite regularly. Strong Keywords with Zero Returns in Google's Traffic Estimator
Hi: I have a dilemma and have not been able to find a good answer anywhere - and I have looked. 🙂 Gather up a bunch of keywords from Google's Keyword Tool that have tens of thousands of queries per month for local and global. When I plug the same keywords into Google's Traffic Estimator, even with a high bid (over $2) and a high daily budget ($50-100), I get all zeros returned from Traffic Estimator for columns Estimated Average CPC; Estimator Ad Position; Estimated Daily Budget, etc. Can someone please explain why this is the case? Is it because the keywords themselves, despite in some cases having hundreds of thousands of monthly searches, are low competition and therefore have no real value in Adwords? Are the Volume numbers from the Keyword Difficulty Tool identical to Google Adwords Keyword Tool?
I use the Keyword Difficulty Tool daily. Because of the troubles with Google's API I can no longer see the search volumes. I still want to use the tool for difficulty numbers because I think this is a much better number than the Google Adwords Competitive bar. If I use the Adwords keyword tool for volume numbers, will that be sufficient? Is this the same as what Moz usually provides? If no, where is the best place to gather volume numbers? Thanks!
