Schema or Google Video Sitemap
-
Hey.
I have a few hundred pages with videos on them. I want to have rich snippets with the thumbnail and such in the search results.
Should I focus my time on Schema or building out a solid sitemap?
Your feedback is appreciated!

Hi Tommy,
It's good to see you are thinking about Schema.org, it's here to stay.
Anyway to answer your question, it doesn't need to be one or the other. You can add schema to your page and use a video sitemap.
If you just want the video thumbnail to show up in the SERPS, using like Vimeo or Wistia should be sufficient. If you want to go even further, you could mark it up with Schema.org as follows: (this is an example from the website: http://schema.org/VideoObject
<div< span="">itemprop="video" itemscope</div<>
itemtype="http://schema.org/VideoObject">
Video: <span< span="">itemprop="name">Interview with the Foo
Fighters</span<>
<meta< span="">itemprop="duration" content="T1M33S" /></meta<>
<meta< span="">itemprop="thumbnail"</meta<>
content="foo-fighters-interview-thumb.jpg" />
<object< span="">...></object<>
<param< span="">...></param<>
<embed< span="">type="application/x-shockwave-flash" ...></embed<>
<span< span="">itemprop="description">Catch this exclusive interview</span<>
with Dave Grohl and the Food Fighters about their new album,
Rope.
Why not run tests? First you could add the video sitemap using Vimeo, let it get indexed and make sure the thumbnail is showing in the SERPS. You could then add a different title, description etc using schema and see which Google prefers. Alternatively, you could add both, for example, add 5 videos using Vimeo then another 5 using Schema.org markup. It would be interesting to see if Google display the Schema results as video thumbnails.
If that sounds like too much work, I would just go with the Vimeo video sitemap rather than schema because we know it works.
I hope this helps.

Hosted externally with Vimeo.

I would focus your time on schema as it will likely deliver the most long term value. Are your videos hosted internally or externally on Vimeo or YouTube?

Seeing different Google 3-Pack results on Android mobile browsers vs. IOS mobile browsers. Why is this?
I am researching new SEO recommendations in lieu of Google's controversial "3-Pack" update. I am noticing very different results in the Google 3-Pack on a android mobile browser when I do a local search query versus a query in apple mobile browser. For example if I do a Google search for "Seattle Sporting Goods" I am able to see direction links and full address numbers for businesses in the 3-Pack. However the same query on a Android phone provides only "teaser" street name results, no direction links but still shows business reviews. Is it possible that the 3-Pack update is still in flux? Shouldn't the Google 3-Pack show uniform results across all different mobile browsers? This could impact my SEO recommendations.

How do I improve positioning in Google Images?
Looking around in Webmaster tools today and I noticed we have hundreds of thousands of impressions in Google Images, but a very low CTR. I understand normal SEO, but what about increasing rank in Google Images? It is hard to get links straight to an image, and we already use proper alt tags. Any other ideas?

How do you know if you are listed in google+ local?
OK This Google+ local and Google places merge is confusing. My first question is how do you know if your company is listed in Google+ local? I've done a search in Google Plus (logged in with another gmail account) but couldn't find my company on the results. Second question is that I am also not able to be found in maps.google.com, is this related? Thanks

Google Places - Bulk Upload Solution
Hi we have a client who currently has over 50 stores in the country (Australia). Some of these stores already have a Google Plus Local Pages and manage them individually. Most of them have reviews, and images. The corporate office wants to place all these stores under one bulk account to bring consistency with the brand and it's image. Now this presents a issue. From our research we have 3 options: 1. Un-verify the listings in each of the accounts and once this has been done, claim them individually in the account you want to manage them under. 2. Delete the listings from Maps and then recreate them under the bulk feed in account. This will allow you to manage them with the rest of your listings more efficiently, however if the stores have any reviews these may be lost. 3. Create new listings and leave the other ones and these should get merged, the issue here is the data could be incorrect and it could cause some duplication. Our goal is to transfer the listings to a single bulk account without losing the - reviews, and images.Or avoiding new problems such as duplicate listing or the listing gets somehow deleted for weeks during the process, causing massive frustration with all the stakeholders involved. I think our best bet is (1) to get the stores to individually unverify their account. However this may risk the lost of reviews and images. Plus it will be highly unlikely that the store owners will follow through or like doing this, and would be a painful long communication process which may take 2+ months. Are they any suggestions on how to best approach this situation? Thanks, Matt Carter

Google categories for local limousine service
I manage the Google places page for a SAB (local limousine company). The question is, should I add "taxi" and "airport shuttle service" as categories? I have listed only "limousine" and "car service' for now and I want to play it safe although those 2 are related to limo service. Sometimes people refer to limo service as "taxi service" or they are inquiring about prices for shuttle service to the airport and they end up booking the service quite often. Does Google look to our website to find these words in the content? Google Analytics show lots of people are finding us through those two keywords as well although you cannot find the word “taxi" on our website. The interesting thing is that when searching for "taxi + my zip code" the company shows up 4th on maps results and when searching for "shuttle service + my zip code”, the company shows up 2nd on local results and also 2nd in organic results. Is this enough to make me add these 2 categories? Second question is about the area served, does it make a difference (in rankings) if I choose “Distance from one location"over"List of areas served"? What happens is the red pin would be in a different location. If I choose "Distance from one location" the pin would be right in the center of the city (which I think it shouldn't matter anymore that much since the proximity to the centroid is not a ranking factor anymore). If “list of area” served is selected, (the city name will be chosen) then the pin would be about 5 miles West of the city center. Any thoughts will be appreciated. Thank you!

Video SEO Markup Test
Hey Everyone, I'm trying to get a video marked up on my (test) website and it is not working. I was hoping someone around here could lend a hand. the post is www.zachsemago.com/?p=28 This is my first ever markup attempt. I assume I just put the markup that applies in the appropriate place in the wordpress post. I thought I had it setup right, and the google rich snippet testing tool told me it extracted some video data. I chose to rank for something without competition so I targeted "how to buy a car on jupiter, mars". The post shows up #1 for that term and some other related ones, but no video. I thought I had covered all my bases, can someone please take a peek and let me know if I'm screwing up somewhere? FYI, I don't have a video sitemap operating. Of the articles I read, it seemed a video sitemap was not mandatory. But regardless my brain has turned to mush on the subject so if I should/shouldn't use one pleas tell! Thanks

Google Places Verification
Sometimes you can verify and claim a Google Places listing via phone, other times they will only send a post card. ANy reason why? Is it lack of trust to verify via phone or old dulpicate listings? Post card is just so unreliable. ANy way to "force" a phone verification?

Links from Google Books
Hi Interested in your views on this and any references to research on the subject Using Google Books recently I have discovered multiple citations of a web site I produced years ago in a whole load of publication. Really quite touching to find these 10 years afterwards I imagine that this must have a positive effect on search engine listings for this site. The site has really good listings still. Has any research or any announcement been made by Google about this. Pushing this a bit further ; An advertising hoarding has a web site address http:// ... would Google StreetView pick this up and could it be used as a signal too ? Neil PS No I don't sell adversing hoardings 😉
