URL Tags / Affiliate tracking help
-
1. If I give a sales rep a unique tag to put at the end of a URL for tracking purposes, will Google index the "www.mysite.com/service.html?unique-tag" version of a page and display it in search results?
2. Would a tool like Xenu be able to find that version of a URL?
Reason for questions: If I give my sales people tags with their names in them, I don't want competitors poaching my sales people by search for all URLs on my domain.
Follow up: are there any other potential issues that I should think about?
Thanks!

Q1. Google won't index incoming tagged links from email, bookmarks, etc. (although Google Analytics will pick them - and you can configure Analytics to ignore tags - see screenshot - a necessity when understanding PPC traffic in GA). To be sure, try this query to see if you're getting any pages that have tagged incoming links like that indexed:
site:www.mysite.com html?
Q2. Xenu (or a bot) will only find what is put out to be crawled. If tagged URLs are published somewhere, all bets are off (or bots on).
Why not tag with unique identifiers that only you have the key for? RB92102 = Rob Brown in San Diego?

My affiliate links are being crawled by Google. Is this a bad thing? Also, should I add rel: nofollow to affiliate links?
Hi All, I have an issue on Google Search Console. It seems all my affiliate links are being crawled. Is this a bad thing? The reason I found out is that all but one link was flagged with a warming. It goes on to say that it was blocked by robots.txt. The strange thing is that I've not set any links to be blocked in robots.txt. Also, should affiliate links be nofollow? I'm asking because I was recently sent this article by Yoast on how to properly cloak my affiliate links without using a plugin. https://yoast.com/cloak-affiliate-links/ In the method, they apply the nofollow and noindex rules to the links. I'm just a little confused on how to go about affiliate links the SEO friendly way.

UK Affiliate programmes as an advertiser
Hi, I'm looking into setting up an affiliate programme (as an advertiser). The company offers commercial mortgages for a UK market only. I was wondering if you had any experience with any UK affiliate platforms and had any recommendations? I want to test the water with a platform first as we don't really know whether it will work for us or not. We're looking at it for lead generation. Potentially offering payment on a completed mortgage or a lower payment per lead. I think it may be worthwhile offering both options. I'll have to work out the model, but we can make it work nicely for the publisher, I think. Thanks, Amelia

What Do You Think About Publishing/Distributing Infographics?
I am looking for ways to gain links / visibility / traffic and so I did a little search on infographics and found this company: http://nowsourcing.com/services/infographics/ I contacted them about their services and here's a part of their reply: ====================================================

Here's a bit more information about our pricing options: level 1 - infographic design (up to 3 major revisions, 30 minor revisions) - $3,000
level 2 - infographic design + research (up to 5 hours) - $4,000
level 3 - infographic design + research + promotion (social networks plus 30+ outlets) - $5,000 **Distribution is on a few different levels:**1 - we look for top name mainstream media / large traffic / high pr websites that will run the infographic
2 - we have a media network of sites where we feature the infographic
3 - we have the ability to publish on numerous sites that feature infographics and / or are niche vertical targeted
4 - we also promote via large audiences in social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, StumbleUpon and Pinterest **Here are some good examples of our artwork and promotion abilities:**Facebook vs Google Display network, www.wordstream.com/articles/facebook-vs-google-display-network
Estimated 15-20 million reach, was profiles in Adweek here - www.adweek.com/sa-article/beyond-words-142494
[...] ==================================================== Now my concern is with the distribution part. Would that be considered as spamming by Google? They seem to push the same infographic on a ton of websites. If you have better advices on infographics, please do share 🙂0 -
In what ways would an affiliate site be okay with Google?
I know Google has slammed affiliate sites hard. But affiliate marketing can be a real business and had an idea for one, but I would like to know if ALL affiliate sites are looked at as evil in Google's eyes, or if it's just those with thin and duplicate content in the product descriptions. I know they want brands to come up ahead of affiliates of that brand, and that makes sense. If I sold Acme Widgets products, Acme Widgets itself should come up ahead of my site. But what if the site sold widgets in general, with the term widgets not a branded keyword? If all product descriptions are unique and well-written content, on a site that is high quality, would it still be downgraded by Google just because there are affilate links in it? I guess overall the question could be boiled down to, are affiliate sites hit because they have horrible content or because they have links to affiliate programs in them?

Promoting an Affiliate Scheme
I have to promote an affiliate scheme, and am drawing up a list of techniques that I can use to get people interested and sign up to it. Currently I have: Promoting the scheme in any article promotion. Identifying relevant websites to the scheme, and contacting them directly. Networking in affiliate forums and communities. Promoting on Facebook and Twitter. Possibly producing a video reviewing the scheme and posting it onto YouTube and other video sites. Can anyone think of any other techniques that I could try using? Cheers.
