Could targeting 2 geographic locations decrease rankings?
-
Hello,
I think that us targeting 2 different geographic locations (San Francisco, CA and Salt Lake City, UT) is negatively effecting the rank of some of our main keywords.
My evidence for this:
Since December our main keyword (NLP) dropped in ranking for nlpca(dot)com from about 19th to about 40th. This is about when we started to really target 2 different locations. Other main keywords dropped a lot as well, like the important term "NLP Training"
Also, our name, nlpca(dot)com indicates NLP California (CA stands for California in Google)
The other day we bolded a sentence with the words "Salt Lake City, Utah" at the top of our content and in one of Google's Databases (the one I was looking at) we dropped in rankings for "NLP California" where we used to be completely sitelinked (where we took up a lot of space at the top of the search). Also, we shot up to 1st on my datacenter for both "NLP Utah" and "NLP Salt Lake City". At the same time, our rankings for the term "NLP" dropped off the map. It has come back up, but we've also targeted California again.
A lot of our anchor text has the word "California" in it.
We're thinking about building a separate site for Utah and just linking to it from the California website when we need to.
Does it sound to you, in your experience, that targeting both locations in our case is what's causing a decrease in rankings?
Thank you!
-
You're welcome, Bob.
Sorry if that wasn't clear. I think I need more information. When you say you are targeting Salt Lake City and San Francisco, do you mean that you have offices in those two cities and are doing a true local campaign for the cities (optimizing the site for them + getting Google Place Pages, other local business index listings, etc.)?
Or, is your service virtual and you are just targeting cities with your content only?
If the former, then if the Local SEO is not handled correctly, Google can get confused as to why you've got two distinct addresses. In such a case, they may lose 'faith' in the validity of their data about you and that could, potentially, cause a drop,
Please, come back with more info if you can.

Thanks Miriam!
What do you mean if "Google got mixed up about our address", and would that affect national rankings?
-
Hi Again BobGW,
As promised, I ran this past a few colleagues. As I expected, the response was "correlation is not causation". Unless the Local SEO on your site or on local business indexes was mishandled, it seems unlikely that your targeting your second location is responsible for the ranking drop you observed. Now, if Google got mixed up about your addresses, that could cause a problem, but provided you've handled your Local SEO correctly, this is probably not the culprit.
Hope this feedback helps!

Hi BobGW,
I have not encountered any studies or evidence to indicate that adding a second location would cause a ranking drop of the original location - though, of course, you have in a sense split your KWs in half by doubling them (adding Utah).
I'd like to ask a few of my Local SEO colleagues for any feedback on this in case anyone can point to a similar case. I'll be back.

One factor that seems to have quite a bit to do with geographical rankings is the actual popularity of that geographical region. Larger more metro areas have more people more people searching & are harder to rank in then smaller places with fewer people thus fewer people searching.
I can cobble a site that ranks top 3 for Daly City Photography in a day or so.
Yet if I create the same site for San Francisco Photography.
That will be a much harder set of keywords to rank for since Daly City is so small & has so fewer people using that phrase VS San Francisco.
The same may be true for California VS Utah.

Hundreds of factors determine your rankings. I don't think you can point to creating a second geographic location and say that was what tanked your SERPs. For all you know google could be saying... wow! these guys have two locations now, they must be successful... but other factors tanked the rankings.
Would I build a second site for a second location? Only if the service was completely different... Like if I had a beer joint in Utah and a knitting club in California.
But that's only one opinion.

Ranking issue for new website
Hi all, I have got a specific SEO challenge. 6 months ago, we started to build an eCommerce site (located in the UK). In order to speed up the site launch, we copied the entire site over from an existing site based in Ireland. Now, the new UK site has been running for 5 months. Google has indexed many pages, which is good, but we can't rank high (position: between 20-30 for most pages). We thought it was because of content duplication in spite of different regions. So we tried to optimize the pages for the UK site to make them more UK-related and avoid content duplication. I've also used schema to tell google it's a UK-based site and set up Google my business and got more local citations. Besides, If you could give me any suggestions, it'd be perfect.

Page not ranking because of React.js ?
Hey guys, I'm struggling with this part of my website which uses react.js . My developers used this saying it's much better and much quicker (which I think so too) but we have really low traffic coming from google compared to the other parts of the website (not using react.js). Moz gives me a score of 85% for the page but we get less than 100 visits / day and we were targeting 10.000 visits/day giving the traffic of this section in our competitors website (our whole website has 60.000 visits / day). (Section is online since 3 months now) Can you help me see what is wrong there ? I'm in Belgium so we have the website in 3 languages (FR/NL/EN) but the most important ones are FR & NL. FR : https://gocar.be/fr/prix-voitures-neuves/Audi/A3/A3-Sportback/1-0-TFSI_39CER NL : https://gocar.be/nl/prijzen-nieuwe-wagens/Audi/A3/A3-Sportback/1-0-TFSI_39CER EN : https://gocar.be/en/price-new-cars/Audi/A3/A3-Sportback/1-0-TFSI_39CER Main competitors having a better ranking than us (exemple in FR) : https://www.moniteurautomobile.be/modele--audi--a3/prix.html https://www.vroom.be/fr/prix/audi-a3/citadine-2012/197 Cheers ! How to improve my rankings?
Hi guys, I'm targeting a specific country NZ to start off with as my site is only new 3months old - whilst I'm trying to rank for various keywords such as - psychic readings, online psychic readings, love psychics, clairvoyant, astrology, tarot card readings etc I can see I'm slowly ranking around 18, 20,30,40 through my blog page, but nothing from the site. I know the site is content thin and were currently working on improving this, is there anything else you can suggest that perhaps I might need to be aware of? Or any tools I could use to go about getting information that could help put me ahead lol Thanks all!

Subpage ranking for homepage keyword
Hi all, May seem like a simple scenario and I might be missing something, but my subpage seems to be ranking for my main homepage keyword. The subpage PR is 28 and my domain authority is 17, how can I get my main home page to rank instead of the sub page (product page)? I want to stay away from exact match anchor text links, any suggestions?

Bing Ranking Factors
I'm curious about the relationship (or lack of ) between Google rankings and Bing rankings. We took a huge hit last winter with Google and have since gotten back up to the top 3 and have been holding steady on all our most important terms. Most of our losses since regaining Google, have been with Bing. This week, we dropped 44 points on Bing and Yahoo! for our most important term. Are there known factors for Bing ranking? If so, can anyone please enlighten me? And does anyone think Bing rankings even matter these days?

Geographical coverage
Hi there, I need some help how best to represent the geographical coverage of our businesses on our websites and in Google Local. We are a supplier of construction materials. We have a retail business and a trade business. We have a HQ and several branches in locations across the UK. Our delivery area expands from those locations. We also acquired some time ago a website that ranked highly for one of our products. In summary we have:retail website trade website niche product website (brand not related to company) The products are largely the same (some variations between sites) but of course the language used on the pages might be optimized for different search terms to attract different customers i.e. retail and trade. The niche product website actually competes with the retail for ranking for those product pages and I believe should be removed and all traffic directed to the retail site (of course others argue about branding). 1. How do we represent these businesses in Google? Everything under 1 company name? e.g. Joe Bloggs Construction Supplies Or separate names? e.g. Joe Bloggs Construction Supplies Joe Bloggs Construction Trade Supplies Joe Bloggs Niche Product Supplies 2. The location As I understand, its poor form to tell Google we have 3 businesses at the same address. e.g. Joe Bloggs Construction Supplies - London addressJoe Bloggs Construction Trade Supplies - London addressJoe Bloggs Niche Product Supplies - London address A suggestion is to modify the address to put 10A street, 10B street, etc to make them uniquely identifiable. Is this the best practise? What about telephone numbers? Also even though we have several branch locations, the website we'll want to direct them to will be the same. Is this OK or do we need to direct them to the branch page within the website so the URLs are considered unique? If this is the case, this would have an impact on CTR as the visitor would land on a contact page instead of a page leading to products. Also in the title field on the Google Local page, should we: State the company name e.g Joe Bloggs Construction SuppliesState the company name and business type e.g. Joe Bloggs Construction Trade SuppliesState the company name, business type and location e.g. Joe Bloggs Construction Trade Supplies - London 3. Indexing & Coverage area Google Local provides a description box and categories that our business falls under. Should we follow the categories that are suggested by Google when we start typing in the category box or make our own based on our main product/category keywords? Say we identified a category "timber supplies" and mentioned this keyword within the description text as well; are the categories and keywords in the description text considered when listing the business in search or is it content found via the URL given in the Google Local profile? Would this then consider locations mentioned in the description to return our company in search results for the category + location mentioned in the text? Under delivery/coverage area, If I specify a county/state. Would we then be considered in search results for terms that mention cities within that county/state? Currently, we do not appear for many local searches within our delivery coverage area even though specified in Google Local. I would like to understand how to improve this. We have a good domain authority and rank highly for broad search terms but not so much for local. 4. Represent coverage for organic search website The last question is how we represent our coverage area on our website. We cant possibly list all cities or counties we cover on each page, certainly not frequently enough for it to be considered by search engines. Is there some HTML header tag we can use? What is a search engines behaviour concerning a companies location and coverage? Would we need to create articles are pages focused around local search terms e.g. <category or="" product="">in <location>?</location></category> Thank you so much for any help you can give. Kind regards, Antonio

How to increase rankings?
I know to increase rankings involves link building, but what kind of link building is worth it and what type is not? At the moment most of my link building effort is focused on guest blogging, which has worked well for me, I have seen some good movement on a range of keywords using this tactic but I cant help but think I could get a lot more movement in the serp's if I mixed it up a little. A few other link building techniques I know of are below, but I don't really use them, so my question is what ones should I be using combined with my guest blogging to give my rankings that little extra help. 1. Directory Submissions 2. Article Submissions 3. Press Release Distribution 4. Forum Signatures 5. Blog Comments 6. Social bookmarking 7. Social Sites (Squidoo, Weebly, Wordpress, blogger) If I have missed something please let me know. Cheers
