Where to start?

new pro member. great reports! but with only 8 hours in a day and hundreds of hours of work ahead (610+ site pages,) where to start once i have my reports? thanks

Hi Mike,
First off, if you have a couple hours to spare, I'd start by watching a couple of videos. They are over a year old, but still contain tons of good knowledge about using Moz tools

Yes, fixing errors is often considered "low-hanging-fruit" and can sometimes have a quick effect on improving your rankings - but not always, unfortunately.
For beginners, the On-page optimization tool is one of my favorites, because it contains so much knowlegde in a single tool. Pick a keyword, URL, and get to work.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

Yes,Since these errors (like Duplicate pages,Titles or 404 not founds) are impacting your pages negatively, without correcting them it's to early to talk about improvements.Try fix all errors first and then go to each page individually and start to make your optimization with your researched keywords.

If he spends hours fixing duplicate content, writing copy & changing all his titles and meta.
Then he learns in a week that his site structure is that of a drunk octopus and feels it is better to remove several pages to clean up rankings and a better user experience.
That is a lot of wasted time.

Hi Harry ...
So ... Can I assume that errors impact my pages negatively MORE than improvements impact my pages positively?
Thank you
- Mike

I would spend a few days just reading and absorbing info.
Then take time off and have a few cups of tea.
Then study some more.
More tea....
Then find ONE long tail keyword that you want to work on.
Use the reports to make changes to ONE web page.
(use a little page that is buried & not your home page)
By now your used to drinking tea and waiting, so make some changes and wait for the next crawl (about a week or so) see what those changes did to your SERPS. Use that knowledge to learn how to start slowly changing other pages. As you read more and learn more all those changes will start to add up.
For very few things in SEP there is no one clear cut simple answer, but there are many theories that seem to evolve every few months to years. No one thing will be the simple answer, each little thing adds up to create a puzzle.

A starting place would be the Learn SEO tab on SEOmoz (http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo). That will help explain some of the terms your seeing in your report. The Beginner's Guide to SEO will help you learn about SEO so that you can either do the work yourself, or understand what an SEO pro is telling you.
-
I don't know how much SEO has already been done on your site...
... but if I was just starting out I would hire a pro to do a study and recommend on your site. You explain your goals and your site and they spend an hour or two reviewing your site and your SERPs, then prepare a to-do list that they review with you by phone.
That's better than shooting in the dark. You get immediately actionable items that should produce ROI.
-
First of all as soon as you get your report, try to fix all errors mentioned asap and then move forward

Getting Started
Hi I am new to SEO and just getting started here with MOZ. I am a photographer and blogger and primarily interested in improving my sites traffic. My site gets reasonable amount of traffic but I want to do better. For example I am page 3 for Photography Blog but I want to be page one. I am a little overwhlemed and not sure where to focus? In Moz? With Backlink building? Does anyone have a methodology on how to approach looking at my site they recommend they are willing to share? I am also looking for someone to help me with the technical parts of ensuring my Wordpress site is up to speed. Any recommendations? Thanks Dave

Started linkbuilding, traffic drops
So I have a couple 3 year old projects I left intact for the last 2 years. Lately I tried to revigorate them. I started to build links to pages that used to be in Google top ten, but the more links I build, the more I lose out on traffic. The main keywords stay around the same position, I suppose the loss in appearances and traffic that can be seen in webmaster tools is mainly due to long tails I do not check the rankings for. I want to ask you guys if anybody have experienced similar data? I suppose it might be due to the exact anchor tags that I have used 3 years ago, so I already started removing those to see if it has a positive effect. I wanted to ask you, maybe somebody has experienced the same and already knows the reason and a solution for this phenomenon?

Starting a new site's link campaign... how to approach it?
Over the last few years I have been building content in my niche that I believe rivals some of the best content out there and deserves some attention. Although I have a plan to produce alot more content which I believe will take the quality and quantity of my content into a position among the top 5 or top 10 sites in my niche in the next 1-2 years, I decided that making that massive investment in content production irrespective of a consistent marketing plan is a recipe for failure because I need the positive feedback loop from site visitors to begin now, not in 2 years. Right now I'm in a position where I'm producing content that I think is better than alot of what's out there, and it's just not ranking the way I believe it should. I think I need to do a legitimate link building campaign to establish the website a little more firmly and put it on more level ground with some of its competitors. In Majestic SEO's "fresh index", most of my site's immediate competition have no more than 500 new domains in their links, though the biggest one has some 2,000. How can any link building effort I might take on possibly compare to links of this scale? Is there some "rule of thumb" for how many quality links I should aim for to get on square ground with some of the competitors on the lowest rungs? And if I try to build that many links at once, do I risk sending signals of untrustworthiness? (Assume I'm not going to be looking for any shoddy links, and in general will aim to follow Google guidelines.)

How to get started with a brand new site and domain name and prioritize content creation?
Hi there. I just bought a Moz Pro membership with the goal to start with a new domain name and create a content channel. The domain name is completely fresh so it doesn't have any authority or trust associated with it. I did initial keyword research with the Google Keyword Tool for the niche I want to address and know what content I can get out. I would like to prioritize content creation based on what will rank easily in Google and then work my way up from there. Do you have ideas on how I could best prioritize these keywords to this? How can I identify the low hanging fruit for getting some incoming links to my website such that there is already some incoming link juice? (without using any black hat tricks) Any hints or tips are greatly appreciated. Thanks! PS: The website is in Europe where the blogosphere is really underdeveloped for the niche.

When do backlinks start helping?
I have been working hard at getting quality backlinks but I had a lot of keywords slip in rankings this week. This may because I have been extremely busy for a week and haven't added a lot of content to my site. But I thought the backlinks would be helping. How long does it take backlinks to start boosting your site and what results should I see? I am focusing on getting backlinks from a site with a PR of 7. The others have a PR of 4-5. They are the BEST sites in my niche.

Can I start SEO before finishing my website?
Hi, I'm new to SEO and websites. I'm slowly building a website at the moment. I was wondering if I could set up a blog at the domain name I will use for my final website and begin doing SEO. Eg. I set up a blog using a CMS like Squarespace and begin blogging at domain.com/blog (with links to the domain.com/blog from the domain.com home page) and inbound links point to the domain.com 'front page'. And then add the design of the 'front page' of the website using Squarespace at a later stage eg. domain.com. Is this a good idea? Will it work? I'm anxious to get started on SEO. Thanks!

Penguin: Carry On & Hope Or Start A New Site
I'm at a loss and no so-called SEO agency/expert I've hired appears to know the main causes of our post-Penguin downfall of our traffic. To set the scene, I set up a voucher code site (www.ozvouchercodes.com.au) in Australia 3 years ago and since, it's been growing very well up until Google launched the Penguin update in April. Having read as much as I could on the update my understanding is toxic links cause the slap. For on-site I've checked the site and tried to reduce keywords [spamming], increased [unique] content across the site and made sure there are as few instances of duplicate content as possible. To attempt to understand my back link profile I've used SEOmoz & Link Detective as the current SEO agency give me little visibility on this. It appears we're a little top heavy with 32% & 11% of are keywords containing 'coupons' and 'promotion codes' respectively. Consequently we no longer appear on those two terms but also hundreds of other terms we once appeared in the top 3 postitions. The Link Detective report downloaded also appears to have a number of back links with the words 'Penalized' and 'Banned' next to them. Unfortunately there is no explanation on Link Detective whether this needs action or not. My current SEO agency suggest that we have been too focused on a limited number of keywords and that a few more months of diversifying the range will solve it. So do I spend another £X amount for 3-6 months of SEO or drop the site on a new URL and start again. Any ideas? Any help is very welcome & appreciated. Henry
