Using a 302 instead of a 301
-
I am trying to figure out the best way to garner the most amount of link value.
We have an app that lives on a sub-domain ... For the purposes of this question, let's call it app.mydomain.com. We provide a service with this app that requires clients (with very high ranking websites) to link into app located on the sub-domain.
Would I garner more authority if had the high ranking client website link into a url that wasn't a sub-domain and redirect it using a 302?
For example: What if I created a 302 that was www.mydomain.com/app and have it redirected to the sub-domain version of app.mydomain.com?
Additionally am I correct to assume that a 301 would merely pass that value to the sub domain and NOT provide much value to the root?
-
Just to clarify, I want to direct the link juice to: www.mydomain.com from app.mydomain.com. As these high profile websites will be linking to the app.
My idea was to have them link to a page on the www.mydomain.com/app that I would effectively redirect back to app.mydomain.com.
But if I use a 301, the 301 will direct link juice back toward the sub domain (app.mydomain.com).
So my question is ... will the 302 keep the juice at the www version (not pass the juice)
Hopefully this makes sense. The other option is to simply let them link to the app. and add a canonical tag that points the juice back to the www version.

It seems your on the righ track as a 302 Redirect is a temporary redirect
and passes 0% of link juice according to SEOMOZ: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirectionAlso The "root domain" redirected page will still retain its PageRank, MozRank,
Page Authority and Traffic Value – and the detour page will not accumulate any.You are also correct about the 301:
A 301 Redirect is a permanent redirect which passes between 90-99% of link juice
according to SEOMOZ: http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/redirectionKeep in mind that on this same page SEOMOZ goes on to say "and in most cases (302 redirect) should not be used.
Also if kept to long a 302 will eventually slide in rankingsI think yes you will garner more link value using a subfolder then a subdomain
As you will see posted also on SEOMOZ:"5. Subdomains or Sub-folders
Since search engines keep different metrics for domains than they do subdomains,
it is recommended that webmasters place link worthy content like blogs in subfolders
rather than subdomains. (i.e. www.example.com/blog/ rather than blog.example.com)
The notable exception to this is language specific websites. (i.e. en.example.com for english)"http://www.seomoz.org/learn-seo/domain
But the main point here is will you gain anything to your root domain while it
has a 302 and redrecting to another pagePersonally, I would avoid the 302 and move the page "app.mydomain.com" to the subfolder "www.mydomain.com/app"
Having the old page url "app.mydomain.com" 301 redirect to the subfolder "www.mydomain.com/app"
passing 90-99% of the juice -
What subdomain are you trying to get link juice for? app.mydomain.com or www.mydomain.com?
Never use a 302. You lose 100% of link juice.
With a 301, you will still lose a little, maybe 10% or so, but you will pass the link juice on to the app.mydomain.com
But if you are trying to get the most Link Juice to the root domain mydomain.com, then I would just suggest linking directly to the app.mydomain.com

Will using CDN Affect SEO?
I'm got a website with a slider and each of the 6 slides has a 5-second video background. The website is B2B and the user profile for the website is employees at Fortune 1000 companies in the United States using desktop computers to browse. The videos are highly optimized and we did testing using various browsers and bandwidth connections to determine the videos loaded fast enough on down to a 15mbit/s connection (which is pretty low by today's average U.S. business bandwidths.) We tried hosting the videos on Vimeo and YouTube but it caused issues in the timing of the slide show display. (I've not seen any other website do what we do the way we do it. Most sites have a single video background with a single text overlay on top.) The downside to this is that loading all those videos produces a lot of bandwidth usage for our server. The website is serving a niche service industry though so we're not exceeding our current limits. I'm wondering though might there be some benefit to hosting just the video files on a CDN? Obviously that would mean lest bandwidth usage for our server, and possibly quicker load times where the CDN server is closer to the user than our server. But are there benefits or downsides from an SEO perspective noting that I'm proposing only putting the videos on the CDN, not the entire web page.

Shall I use a 301 or 302 redirect when people leave the company?
Hello, At my company, we have instances where client-facing people leave the company and so we need to remove their profile page from the website. As opposed to people receiving a 404 when they search for them, I thought it would be best to divert visitors to a generic landing page to explain that the person they are looking for has left the company with details on how to get in touch. I'm tempted to use a 302 redirect so the person they are searching for stays in the search results longer. But longer-term, will this cause any harm? Should it be eventually be turned into a 301 redirect? Or should I just use a 301 in the first instance. Thanks in advance, Stu

301 Redirection
Hi there guys, I have a question about redirection. My boss has just bought a new domain name and he wants it to redirect to our current site when looking for specific products. www.example.com is our current website www.productname.com is the new domain So the new domain would be redirected to example.com. Would that be considered against Google Policies? Thanks

Should I run 302 first before implementing 301?
I just want to ask if it is necessary to run 302 redirections first before redirecting old to new URLs permanently. I heard that we should run temporary redirects first so we can check after and to avoid passing the link juice but I want to hear thoughts from experts. Do i need to test 302s for old pages that are still live or should we redirect old URLs once these pages already removed from the site?

301 Redirect To Another 301 Redirect
Hi, We have a client with an old domain that they want to redirect to their primary domain. They also have a few older domains pointing to the old domain. Do you recommend leaving them as redirects that point to the old domain? This will create a redirect to a redirect situation. Or, is it better to go ahead and redirect those older domains to the primary one's, removing one layer of redirect? Thank you! Jessie

How to handle the 301 of a complete domain on URL level
We will be shutting down an old website with many (good) links, since the site has no strategic relevance anymore. We do have many other sites, but none of them has exactly the same content/topic. Nonetheless, I would like to keep the juice and redirect the site to another newer project. However, I want to redirect certain URLs of the old site to probably even different domains, depending on which content matches best with the alternative newer site. Does this make sense? Or would youjust redirect the whole domain to one other domain although they don't really have the same topic And how would you handle the URL redirects if the old site has more than 50k URLs? Because that is the case. Thanks for any advice
