Duplicate Page Content Question

It did not receive much traffic, so it was re-posted on Co.Design today (March 27th) where it has received significantly more traffic.

My question is if google will dock us for reprinting/reusing content on another site (even if it is a sister site within the same company). If they do frown on that, is there a proper way to attribute the content to the source material/site (fastcompany.com)?

That's a great way to find blog ideas and kudos to you for doing the hard work of guest posting
Syndication has its place... look at AP news for example.
Spinning is a whole other issue and is absolutely duplicate content and should be shamed.

Usually I write unique content based around the services I offer (or to answer a question posed to me on Twitter) and post that on guest blogs as unique content with a backlink to my site, I don't know why but the thought of taking one of my articles and posting the whole thing onto another site as it is (with no modification) seems wrong.
I know there are a lot of people out there who write a good post and then spin the content for other sites with a backlink but technically that should still be classified as duplicate content in a way, or should it?

Yup, you can do that to help the search crawlers know where the original piece came from. Keep in mind that this will not necessarily keep the syndicated copy from ranking. For example, most of my B2Community posts rank better on their site than mine because of their DA. That's because the rel="canonical" is a suggestion, not a directive for noindex.
The only way to truly make sure that the stuff you syndicate will not outrank the original is to put in a meta robots "noindex" tag in the head of the content pages.
If your stuff is getting syndicated though.. there isn't much you can do. Personally, I get enough traffic from my syndicated stuff that it is more than worth it to ride their coattails. If you don't find syndication mutually beneficial you can always contact the site directly and request a noindex tag. Keep in mind this will probably mean they will drop syndicating your stuff altogether.

Can you use canonical tags for things that are not part of your own website? Technically fastcompany.com and fastcodesign.com are different sites.

Great question
You can always syndicate content... just be sure to provide an attribution link. For example, my company gets a lot of traffic via Business2Community because they syndicate our blog on a regular basis. I have attached their standard attribution link.I know that duplicate content is scary but just follow these two rules:
1 - Give credit where it is due
2 - Make sure Google can spot an attribution link
Remember that content creators want you to share their stuff, and obviously you guys want to share your own stuff. Don't assume that Google is going to check to see the relationship, make it obvious. Just a simple "This piece was syndicated with permission from X" will do the trick. Be sure to link to the piece itself
Of course, it's doubly nice if you use the direct link and a main link too Hope that helps!

Yes they will see it as duplicate content.
Yes you can attribute credit to one version or the other, that is using a canonical tag

Regarding internal duplicate content
Suppose two of my webpages from the same site are having 30% to 35% common content. The reason behind this common content is that I put same data and images (in the main content area) since both pages are partially related. But, title tag, meta description, h1 tag, urls are different.

Duplicate Content
When I say duplicate content, I don't mean that the content on a clients site is displaying on another site on the web or taken from a site on the web. A client has a few product pages and each product page has content on the bottom of the page (4-5 paragraphs) describing the product. Now, this content is also displaying on other pages, but re-worded so it's not 100% duplicate. Some pages show a duplicate content % ranging from 12% to 35% and maybe 40%. Just curious if I should suggest having each product page less than 10% duplicated. Thanks for your help.

Static pages with dynamic content: Good for SEO?
I wanted to know ones thoughts on reducing duplication by creating a static page with a few dynamic fields. Has anyone done this? If 75% of a page is static and 25% is dynamic, is that a good ratio? It's an idea I am thinking about to combat duplication issues affecting ecommerce pages. Some ecommerce sites generate a new page for a small change like size, but the content is the same. What if you could create a single static page and depending on the size chosen, only those fields connected to the size are dynamic? Everything else remains the same. For caching purposes, you always submit a cached page with default values. Wouldn't this work? Isn't this a solution for duplicate ecommerce pages? It would also help in ranking, rather than multiple external links across duplicate ecommerce pages, it would just be to a single page.

Duplicate pages and slight product variations
Hi, I'm new here, first post... I've started working on an existing Magento website which is selling furniture. There are products such as leather dining chairs which have very detailed product descriptions. The problem is that there is separate a page for every colour the chair comes in (with exactly the same on-page text), so the page is effectively duplicated 5 times, one for red, one for blue etc... This is made even worse by the fact that the website builder has listed the products in multiple different categories. This means that the same basic product description is in use on maybe 20 or so pages. How would you guys deal with product descriptions for multiple, very similar products where only the colour is different? There's also the problem of very similar title tags etc... Thanks for any help. Very much appreciated.

Duplicated Content Column in excel
I'd like to see all duplicated content URLs in excel. But when I do the export to csv, and then use text to columns, I end up with an empty duplicated content column. The URLs should be in column AF in excel, but this column is empty. Can somebody help me on this?

Do videos count as duplicate content?
If we allow users to embed our videos on their site, would that count as duplicate content? I imagine note, given that Google can't usually 'see' the content of videos, but just want to double check.
