Is it worth me considering a reciprocal linking request to my authority site ?

My web site is www.swimmer.co.uk it sells waterproof mp3 players & is the authority site in its niche
I have no out going reciprocal links
I don't have advertising or encourage reciprocal linking as I thought it may devalue the sites quality & link juice
I have had a reciprocal link request from a swim wear based website called www.onlyswim.com that has a reciprocal linking sub-page with many varied links on it that are not just on the subject of swimming
I don't think I will get any direct traffic from this website so I was wondering if ts worth me agreeing to a reciprocal link page
I think we both have a PR of 2
**Any comments would be much appreciated **
In research to try & answer my own question I have just read this on wikipedia
"Reciprocal linking between websites is no longer an important part of the search engine optimization process.Google and other search engines now do not give credit to reciprocal linking as it does not indicate genuine link popularity."

Thanks to everyone for replying to this query
Having watched Rand's video & I think I'm getting the general impression with link building that if its ethical & natural congruent with ones topic it will tend to stand the test of time
In my case for me I think I will only reciprocal link with site requests that are more closely related to my niche topic 'waterproof mp3 players' & not just generalist swim related sites
thanks again for everybody's input

In general, reciprocal links are fine if there is a good reason for them to be there. Sometimes they help, sometimes they do nothing.
But get too many off-topic reciprocal links and you will risk a penalty.
Rand did a great video awhile back that discussed this topic: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-sitewide-reciprocal-and-directory-links
So, a couple reciprocal links on your site probably wont hurt you, but I'd be extra careful about soliciting these types of links from others. In the end, it's more rewarding and less risky to gain links the hard way.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO.

It is alright to have outbound links, just make sure that they are relevant to the page it is linking from. I believe I have read that relevant outbound links are actually good for SEO. (But don't go crazy).

If it were me I would stay away. I get these requests a lot. Do your research.

You seem to have answered this all by yourself already, reciprocal links and close to useless nowadays and since you do not think you will get any direct traffic from their site I wouldn't bother if I were you.

So OK we have a domain authority currently of 41, we are well established but unfortunately we don't have any pages with PA. I have a fair idea of why this is the case but want to get some other opinions before I form my strategy. 1.It appears our internal link structure is not great and is not very organised 2. It appears we have 58 links going externally on some pages. Some of these external links are social media icons in the footer which are followed. Is there any other factors I should be aware of when building PA on some of my inner pages. Any Thoughts would be appreciated.Link Building | | CAQ1

hello, I recently changed from www to non www. I have redirected my whole website so if I type www. it goes to the non-www page. doing a open site explorer I noticed my www. still has the page authority 14/100 with 6 links. where as the non-www page has 1/100 page authority and no links. how do I get the www. to mirror the non-www links?Link Building | | finnmoto
eg if you goto http://www.finnmoto.com.au/mens-motorcycle-kevlar-hoodie/ it will goto the non-www version automatically, so why does the non-www replicate the page authority / total links attached picture for reference.
Google webmaster has been selected for non-www, its been about 2 weeks.
my domain authority i think about about 21 or more now its 19 aswell. I have a feeling:
nofollow or rel=canonical has something to do with it but Ill need read into what that does and how to apply. any ideas? uRiJ2Ul.png?10
I found this post from Rand from 2008 http://moz.com/blog/headsmacking-tip-1-link-requests-in-order-confirmation-emails 5 years later I'm wondering in a "no-follow" for all unnatural links in the google world we currently live in, is it still a good idea? Also does is really work? or does it annoy the customer? would it be better to use that space to up sell to your customer?Link Building | | PaddyDisplays0
I was going to try to contact webmasters to see if they would remove some of our spammy links. I see alot of them in MOZ but when you go to the site our anchor text is not there. Is this good? How often does MOZ refresh external links. Please see: http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/anchors?site=www.totalvac.com None of the links for the anchor text vacuum cleaner parts vacuum part... in MOZ exist? We have thousands and thousands of sites that link to a domain we are working on, many with low page authority and high domain (bloggers, forum posts, etc). Has anyone experimented with linking to the pages that link to you (not from your site) but from other means in an effort to boost their quality? I'm not sure what method we would use, maybe some relevant blog comments or social votes. But curious if this could be an effective method.Link Building | | iAnalyst.com0
Hello, When optimizing for multiple keywords, should I try to get links back to the root domain of the company I work with, or would it be better to link back to sub-sites specific to the keyword I am optimizing for? Does 'getting the root up' help all keywords I work with? Cheers, MikeLink Building | | Malarowski0
