Odd Link Removal Request
-
Unless I'm missing something, having gotten into trouble... the company in question is not doing a great job at link removal.
Here's an email my client received:
Hi Webmaster,
I work for xxxxxxxxxxx and our site has recently been penalized by Google for an unnatural link profile that violates Google's Quality Guidelines. As part of an effort to get back in their graces, we are removing all links to our website so we can start fresh.
We are making changes to our site to build better content for our audience. I am contacting people who have linked to us in the past to remove any doubt that Google views the link or anchor text as overoptimzed or unnatural.
Therefore, I am respectfully requesting that you remove all links to our site on xxxxxxxxxxx including:
xxxxxxx That says xxxxxxxxxx and goes to xxxxxxxx.
I appreciate your past efforts to link to our content, and I am excited to launch our improved content very soon. We understand that this request takes time and effort, but we would sincerely appreciate your help.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to ask. If you could be so kind as to respond that you have removed the link, it would really help out with my efforts. Thank you in advance!
Best Wishes,xxxxxx
All the details and URLS in the email were wrong. After much back and forth, we tracked down a single link from an infographic -- which I removed.
But is removing all links really the best strategy? Does it ever make sense?
-
We also lightly speculated it could be a competitor falsely claiming to be them and is trying to sabotage their link profile!
-
If they meant it - its probably due to them being frustrated with the reconsideration request. I went through the same thing before until i disavowed everything and the site was released from the penalty. So yeah, a lazy mistake on my part back then but i learned from it, and i wouldnt know any better if i didnt do it
-
I considered this possibility, but given the incompetence of the request (wrong URLs) and the some quick Google research on the person who sent the request (novelist/copywriter)....
...my guess is that sheer incompetence is a more likely explanation.
Looks like the company in question hired the wrong SEO....
...and then hired the wrong person to try to mitigate the damage.
-
Maybe they are telling the webmaster that they are removing "ALL" of their links instead of just the stinky links - like the one on his site.
I bet that is it.
-
Yeah they are absolutely confused, but good on you for taking time out of your busy schedule to try to help out somebody with a Google penalty! This person is clearly a bit misinformed, but it still makes me happy to know that webmasters like you exist!
That said, please don't let your friends send messed up link removal requests like these with incorrect URLs and such. That will just make it harder for all of us in the future. And that is my Public Service Announcement for the day.
-
Myself and Bill Slawski were having a conversation about this on Twitter just yesterday.
It strikes me as laziness - they don't want to navigate through the link profile to identify a good link or a bad link and have just gone "sod it - ask everyone to remove and then we'll disavow if they don't".
Yeah, will probably remove the penalty, but it would also put you so far behind SEO wise. Just laziness if you ask me.
I also don't see why they don't start on a fresh domain if they're doing this, unless they're really attached to their current domain and/or brand.
-
Removing all links is definitely not the way to go but many people are still unsure what constitutes to a good and bad link. That company have gone about it the wrong way though!

Internal Link Building and Link Juice Quality
Hi There! I manage the website for a law office that covers many geographical locations. For very specific niche content, we would prefer to create one piece of content and link to the various geographic locations where we would handle that topic instead of posting multiple variations of the same content for each specific geographical area. If we put a button on these pages that has links to each location, will that have the same "link juice" effect to the pages we're linking that linking directly in the text would? (example: the Where can we help you? button on this page : http://www.zdfirm.com/volkswagen-recall/) Thank you!

Honest thoughts needed about link building / removal.
I have a small online business that has suffered through Google updates over the past year. Turns out that the links built by a previous SEO were harmful - yes, it's the usual story, I know. I've been in touch with an SEO about link removal/link building and have had a proposal. It's not cheap and I would need to dig deep, but it'll certainly be worth it if things work out. If it doesn't, it'll probably become impossible to continue the business. Personally speaking, it's a sorry situation. For link removal, the SEO's proposing to contact the webmasters followed by disavowing, if needed. There's 15k links, but I think a high percentage of these are from industry blogs that I sponsor that have site wide links. Have you heard many success stories about outsourced link removal? For link building, they will be targeting industry websites and blogs. The thing is, I know most of the industry bloggers anyway, and can probably reach out to them myself, if I can develop the right high quality content that they will want to feature. Call me a cynic, but I'm not sure how the SEO can do this. The quality of content on these blogs is extremely high as it's a very creative/visual industry that I'm involved in. I'm just not sure how much scope there is for a third party (with no knowledge of the industry) to do this effectively. That said, there's blogs that aren't directly related to my niche, and I suppose there's possible opportunity there. Maybe??! If the link removal is a good idea, am I better off trying to build links myself and combine that with the link removal service?

Why aren't links to my site from YouTube showing up in my link reports?
Our company is paying for a service to create hundreds of videos/month for us with links back to our primary domain. If I go to YouTube I see the videos with the links, but YouTube does not show in my link reports. Why not?

Free link on a Paid Link Blog
Hi there, I have been doing some outreaching, and managed to have a blog post accepted on a authority blog. They included links to my website, and I was very pleased with the placement. However, having browsed through the site, I was worried to see that they openly admit they allow 'reviews' of websites, with backlinks included, for $50 per review. I am worried I might be penalised without actually doing anything wrong. I did not pay for my link, but the link has been placed on a site which openly admits they accept payment for links. Should I be worried? Should I ask them to take it down? To date I have been told countless times by bloggers I am outreaching that if I pay $10, $50, $100 etc I can write a blog post. I have never accepted because of the risk of penalization. Now, unwittingly, I am linked to from a paid link site with a blog post that would look like I have paid for it because of the placement and style of back link. What do you think? Thanks,

External link
Hi guys! You must get many questions about external links... This is mine. If I get an external link with good authority ranking in google, but it is not relevant to the site (for example, my site is about marquees, but we could get links from schools, which are our main clients, or any type of client) Does that affect negatively somehow to the rankings? or there is good value on it even is not related? Thanks! Adriana
