Links from multiple sites coming from the same server?
-
Hi SEO Mozers,
As I structure my link building campaign I come across alot of directories some of which are located on the same server.
If I am to place links on these sites is this is negative signal for big G?
The reason I ask is because I see that a competitor has used these various directories and is ranking on the no 1 spot for a moderately competetive keyword. I am able to place links on the sites with almost no effort at all therefore even if it does not pass alot of link juice is it still worth it for me. But if this is seen as a negative I would not persue it.
What is your thoughts on this?
Thanks in advance,
Ross

Hi Dan,
Thanks for your reply.
I am with you on this one 100%. All links are good links, some better than others, as long as they are not listed next to the 5000 "cheap viagra" links- all is good.
Cheers,
Ross

HI Saibose,
THanks for you reply. Funily enough I was having this same discusssion with my collegue and I raised the same question. There must be tons of sites on the same server with the same site structure (how many WP blogs have you seen?) and similar content on them. The links won't give me dramatic results over night but they are necessary to maintaining a healthy looking link profile.
Cheers,
Ross

If you can get a low value link for minimal effort, why not? You would get a high quality link with maximum effort, right? If nothing else you demonstrate the variety in your backlinks that Google loves to see. It's ok if not every link you get is the best possible link. It's ok if it doesn't have the best possible anchor text. You got another domain linking to you that is also linking to your competitor, so you're leveling the playing field in a sense. Go for it.
And if you're worried about Google, don't be. A few directories hosted on the same server don't raise red flags. A network of thousands of sites operated by the same person with an intricate link scheme, now that is something to avoid.

Ross,
the fun part is that even Google doesnt know if the website hosted on the same set of IPs have the same owner or belong to different owners. Shared webhosts have such issues. Although, it maybe worthwhile to see if the IPs in that range are getting page rank or not.
As Barry said, it wont give you much mileage.

Shouldn't be seen as negative unless the directories themselves are in bad standing with Google (and I assume they all have toolbar PR and aren't total spam fests).
As you say, it's probably not going to pass a lot of love to your site, but if it's little effort on you part then taking out any advantage the competition has is a good thing

How to handle bad DoFollow links to pages on my site that no longer exist
I briefly had a forum on one of my sites, but after getting inundated with spam I decided to remove it for the time being. During the brief time it was up, most of the spammers were stopped from registering, but a few managed to get through and posted tons of links to their prescription drug sites. These posts were deleted almost instantly, but the spammers also created DoFollow backlinks on high authority community sites like ning. The forum posts they linked to were deleted immediately, so the links never went anywhere and the forum has been deleted entirely for a few months now. When clicked, the spam backlinks now bring someone to a "Sorry, that page doesn’t exist" page on my site. My site suffered a bit in the last Panda update and it made me look through my backlink profile, finding lots of these links - even though the pages on my site are long gone, could these links be hurting my site? Can a DoFollow link to a site help or hurt the main domain, even if the actual page it's linking to is deleted?

LInk Building Ideas for Large Site
Hi, I have a very large sized website of about 5 Million Pages. Earlier i used to rank very well with many naturally occurred links, But now, i lost my rankings with numerous Google updates. My content is user generated content and it wont be pure original as my users will post the same on other forums too. I all of my pages rank on #1 page for their keywords. Can anyone suggest me good link building strategy for larger websites as each url will have different keyword, i want all of my urls to be ranked well. Waiting for your replies.

Any value in link building to local pages on my site?
If I'm trying to rank for the term 'wedding band' with my url: http://www.musicliveuk.com/home/wedding-bands will linking to local pages such as: http://www.musicliveuk.com/live-acts/hire-wedding-bands/wedding-bands-london help the main page to rank? I added the 'local' pages to try and pick up any traffic from long tail search queries but my main focus is on getting the main page to rank as the traffic from long tail queries is so small. So is it worth me spending time building links to these local pages in order to try and help the main page rank?

Where are all the sites that are linking to me?
I need to compile a list of all the siters linking to my site, but my open site explorer analysis shows very few links. I know for certain that there are many many more sites linking to it (it's an academic site and there are links to it from a lot of academic directories). What am I doing wrong?

Link building and directory links to a new site
I have three new sites all hosted on the same server in the same public html folder and each site is in a different folder inside the public html folder. These sites are a listing of live music venues in different cities in Texas. Should I link these sites together to increase page rank to each other and also put key search phrases in the anchor text and place these links in the text in the center of each page of each site to make the links more effective? Also, because the sites are about a year old they don't have many inlinks yet. If i submit them to about 50 directories will Google not like this because there are way more directory links than natural links? I've been told that it is trouble to have more than about 50% directory links compared to natural links. Thanks in advance for your answers! Take care,
