2 sites or one sites: 2 locations
-
Hello,
I have a dog training client who is offering services in 2 separate locations. We're looking to be first in the non-local search results and also rank well in google places.
Would it be better to go for 2 separate sites or one site and try to rank for 2 different locations with one site?
There's both local and standard search results when we type in our keywords.
Thanks!

Miriam,
This is making more sense. But how do we show 2 NAPs on one website. Do we have a page on our site for the 2nd location and list a separate NAP there than on our general contact us?
Also, if there is only one office (like my friends who own a center that trains in california and utah both and don't have an office in california anymore), then how does the NAPs work there?
I assume all of this effects the non-local SERP listings as well as the Google Places listings, and that's why we haven't been able to move up in two locations in the non-Places results.
Thanks again!

Hi Bob,
While I'm not sure while you've not had success with this type of work with your other website, it's definitely possible to rank highly for two locations with one website. Be sure you are following best practices for onsite Local optimization and adhering carefully to the Google Places Quality Guidelines, which are here:
http://support.google.com/places/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=107528
You will need to build reviews, citations and, possibly, links separately for both locations as well as creating great, unique copy for both locations.
*You probably already know this, but just in case you don't, I'll mention that it is essential that you're using 2 different phone numbers for the 2 locations, in addition to the unique addresses. It occurs to me to mention this, because I talk to many Local SEO clients who think they should be redirecting to a single phone number and this hinders there ability to create two unique NAPs.
Hope this helps!
Miriam

OK. I just want to make sure you guys have been able to rank locally for 2 locations. I tried to do this in one of my sites and we can't get up to where we should be with our 2nd location (based on our metrics) with that site.
Also, he's got the exact match domains for both of the two locations' main keywords

Agree with Egol & John - also, create unique & interesting content for each of the location pages
-
Completely agree - just go for the one site so you can maximise your efforts creating one powerful domain. This also means you don't have to worry about duplicating content or creating high quality content for two different sites.

I would build one site and make it really good. Use it to dominate one location and shoot for the second with a couple of pages.
Only go for two sites if the single site attack fails.

Site Migration - Pagination
Hi, We are migrating our website and an issue we are facing is how to handle paginated content in our categories. Our new website will have the same structure but with different urls. Should we 301 redirect all the paginated content (if crawled by Google) to the url of the main category? To put this into an example: Old urls: www.example.com/technology/tvs (main category of TVs & also page 1) ** www.example.com/technology/tvs?v=0&page=2 ** ( page 2 of TVs) New urls: **www.example.com/soundvision/tvs **(main category of TVs & also page 1) **www.example.com/soundvision/tvs?page=2 **(page 2 of tvs) Should we redirect all of the old TV urls (also the paginated) to www.example.com/soundvision/tvs ? The is no rel next, prev tag in our site and no canonicals. Also there is a view all products page in each category, BUT it doesn't contain all the products(max. is 100 per page - yes the view all page is also paginated). The same view all products page (paginated) will exist in the new website also. I checked google search console, and Google has decided to treat as canonical page the first page www.example.com/technology/tvs . Also, all the organic traffic of our categories goes to these pages (main category page - 1st page). I would appreciate any thoughts on this.

Redirecting an Entire Site to a Page on Another Site?
So I have a site that I want to shut down http://vowrenewalsmaui.com and redirect to a dedicated Vow Renewals page I am making on this site here: https://simplemauiwedding.net. My main question is: I don't want to lose all the authority of the pages and if I just redirect the site using my domain registrar's 301 redirect it will only redirect the main URL not all of the supporting pages, to my knowledge. How do I not lose all the authority of the supporting pages and still shut down the site and close down my site builder? I know if I leave the site up I can redirect all of the individual pages to corresponding pages on the other site, but I want to be done with it. Just trying to figure out if there is a better way than I know of. The domain is hosted through GoDaddy.

Same server for different client sites?
Hi everyone - I have a question about whether it's OK for us to host several of our client's websites on the same dedicated web server, without this causing problems in SEO. I know the issues with duplicate content etc., but for background - we provide website services to a particular sector (antiques/auctions). All our clients are distinct, and have written their own copy etc., but because they're all in the same sector, their websites will - largely - talk about the same types of things - so the content is not duplicated, but it's similar in topic, I guess. Does anyone feel it would cause a problem if we were to put several (say about 😎 of our client's websites on the same dedicated web server, or would we be better spreading the sites over different shared servers? Come to think about it, if we are spreading those same 8 sites across 4 virtual servers - but all hosted by the same company - presumably Google would know that too? Thanks in advance for your thoughts on this! Nikki

Dividing my catalog into 2 different sites.
Hi, We are a wholesaler for electronics parts and accessories on our main site Our Business for parts is more B2B. Accessories is more B2C oriented. Right now, our catalog is not the best SEO Friendly kind. We want to move all accesories to a new site. Now. So as not to get duplicated content, and user experience, I guess the best is remove all category pages and product pages from our main site. That would generate lots of 404. What would be the way to handle this as we are talking about hundreds, maybe thousands of pages ? Thanks.

Troubled QA Platform - Site Map vs Site Structure
I'm running a Q&A forum that was built prioritizing UX over SEO. This decision has cause a bit of a headache as we're 6 months into the project with 2278 Q&A pages with extremely minimal traffic coming from search engines. The structure has the following hiccups: A. The category navigation from the main Q&A page is entirely javascript and only navigable by users. B. We identify Google bots and send them to another version of the Q&A platform w/o javascript. Category links don't exist in this google bot version of the main Q&A page. On this Google version of the main Q&A page, the Pinterest-like tiles displaying individual Q&As are capped at 10. This means that the only way google bot can identify link juice being passed down to individual QAs (after we've directed them to this page) is through 10 random Q&As. C. All 2278 of the QAs are currently indexed in search. They are just indexed very very poorly in SERPs. My personal assumption, is that Google can't pass link juice to any of the Q&As (poor SERP) but registers them from the site map so it gets included in Google's index. My dilemma has me struggling between two different decisions: 1. Update the navigation in the header to remove the javascript and fundamentally change the look and feel of the Q&A platform. This will allow Google bot to navigate through Expert category links to pass link juice to all Q&As. or 2. Update the redirected main Q&A page to include hard coded category links with 100s of hard coded Q&As under each category page. Make it similar, ugly, flat and efficient for the crawling bots. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to find a solution as soon as possible.

On-Site Optimization Tips for Job site?
I am working on a job site that only ranks well for the homepage with very low ranking internal pages. My job pages do not rank what so ever and are database driven and often times turn to 404 pages after the job has been filled. The job pages have to no content either. Anybody have any technical on-site recommendations for a job site I am working on especially regarding my internal pages? (Cross Country Allied.com)

SEO Consultant for site audit
Can someone recommend an excellent SEO who can perform a full site audit of my fairly large Wordpress site? The site receives about 14,000 visits per month but traffic is waining one month after a recent change. Need analysis of some funky stuff in my Webmaster tools and overall site review.
