What is wrong with my site?
-
I could use suggestions/input.
My site is consistently being beaten by doorway pages with zero to no content. In fact, on the keyword "lawrenceville plumber" I am being beaten by a KID with a blank wordpress installation.
I really need help determining what my issues are and what I can do to help. According to all of the graders, ranks, etc my site is great. I have written tons of unique content, have added a blog unique articles and self-helps.
Please help!
My site is www.akinsplumbing.net.
Thanks!

Wouldn't worry too much about keyword density. It was possibly a factor in the early age of search engines. But today there's no correlation.

Hi Chuck,
Sorry to hear you're having ranking problems. If your site has been around for awhile, it's usually it's a combination of several factors that come into play.
Short of doing a full site audit, I did notice that a lot of your anchor text seems highly optimized:
http://www.opensiteexplorer.org/anchors?page=1&site=www.akinsplumbing.net%2F&sort=domains_linking_page&source=phrase&target=domainAnd a lot of your links come from the same few sites, including the footer of the aforementioned tattoo parlor. These links are generally found site-wide, in the footer, such as on this page:http://www.dec-international.com/products.html
Also, OSE shows a lot of links from related sites like this: http://bestathensplumber.com/contact-us/ (although it looks like the link has bee recently removed). These are apparently sites owned by your company.
The takeaway is Google will most likely devalue these links, and may even penalize you for not only over-optimization, but for too many inter-linking sites (link-network) If you own multiple sites, it's okay to interlink them a little bit, but in a way that's natural and included in your editorial content.
My best advice would be to try to trim some of these links, and work to replace them with hard-fought editorial links.
Hope this helps! Best of luck with your SEO!

Okay, I got my keyword density to 3% and 3.5%. That's about the best I can do. Having plumbing in your company name makes it hard, but I figured out a work around.
Any other suggestions guys? I really appreciate the help. This has hurt us pretty bad!

I do my business' SEO. I own a bankruptcy firm, so we're in the same boat SEO wise. I've found that content really helps you move up the rankings. I have a competitor with thousands of inbound links who used to beat the hell out of me, but he never added content.
I blog regularly. It's tough to get in the habit. I try to write three 500 word posts at a time and then schedule them to publish every other day. It helps you Google that you have a fresh site. It also helps you hit the long tail searches like "hair clog in drain."
Also, I second Quilbur. Having two closely related sites can hurt you.

The ranking problem is more recent. I will adjust the density to closer to 2% . I was told to stay around 2-6%, but you aren't the first person to advise that. The Plumbing keyword is difficult because it's in our company name.

Hi Chuck,
Along with what Johannes mentioned, I noticed that you have two websites.
- Akins Plumbing
- Akins Plumbing and Septic
While these sites are different, the content is very similar and so, you my be beating yourself up with the two. Also, I noticed you have many many links to a tattoo parlor, that may not be helping much either.
A few years ago, I had two sites in a situation such as yours. I got rid of one to save the other. Worked out great! Thats just my two cents.
Best of luck

Hello chuckakins,
I noticed that the keyword density for your homepage is a little bit too high.
- plumbing has 6.79 %
- atlanta has 6.04 %
- plumber has 4.53 %
To avoid to be filter for over optimization (especially since Penguin), try to bring the keyword density to a natural level. Around 2 % should be good.
Even though you seem to have a good amount of incoming links and Google in honoring that with a PageRank of 3, a lot of incoming links have the keywords plumbing, atlanta and plumber in their anchor text (-> Opensiteexplorer). To Google that might not seem like the links are build naturally.
Did you always have ranking problems or is that something more recent?
Hope this helps you a little bit.
Johannes

Is there an issue with my site?
Been mostly hanging around top of page two for the last couple of years for “Liverpool Wedding photographer” although got myself on page 1 for “Liverpool photographer” I have split the title of the page to target these two keywords. I took the Liverpool photographer off the title to see if it was being detrimental to the “Liverpool wedding photographer” I didn’t see no increase in ranking so put it back as I get a bit of commercial work from it. Since last year I have got onto page 1 at least three times around position 5-6. Within a week or two I start sliding down again and end up back at top of page two. I could understand this slow push out if my competitors were busy SEO wise but from what I have seen they are not. There is a guy using the keywords in URL and calls himself “Liverpool wedding photographer” last time I checked he literally had no links but is in the first 5 positions. I have I think a better link profile than every one else. Although I am on and off with Facebook and Instagram, (more off) so that probably isn’t helping. Although I have a colleague in the video side of things and he doesn’t use social media at all and it hasn’t harmed him. A few years ago I was burned quite badly by a total charlatan. He sunk my home page to page 4. He talked the talk about creating landing pages but his methods were shoddy to say the least. I can’t believe I was taken in by him, although I was only with him for 2 months. He was still using spammy link techniques to generate lots of toxic links for me! I disavowed all of his links and put the keywords back on the home page and was back to my usual top of page 2 position within a week. Since then I have disavowed all directory links and anything not wedding related. I have an article which ranks 1st or second for “Nikon CLS”. I have also another article of 2000 words or so on another reasonable placed photography website. A few links from other vendors or people I have taken photographs for. I have about 10 featured weddings with a link on 4 good weddings blogs. I don’t think a massive amount of blog comments although I have stopped doing this. If I look at most of the competitors these are their main links, with directories as well! Last winter I put a quite substantial article about documentary wedding photography on my home page. I flew to number 2, although I photographed The World Transformed (the alternative labour conference in Liverpool). I got a lot of clicks to a gallery page (few thousand off social media} so I don’t know if that coincided with it. Same thing – watching the website go down a few positions every day until within just over a week or two I was about 4th on page 2! Its like my website is on a spring which can push into page 1 but rebounds back to top of page 2. I am staring to worry that my site has been marked as a bad character in some way because I get what seems to be rough treatment from google compared to my peers. I have written I think 4 or 5 (1500 word) articles the last couple of months talking about lenses and wedding photography related topics and Google pushed me back to page 1, peaking At position 5. I was there for a few weeks and then the slide happened again. Bit demoralised at the moment, what to do? Any help or pointers would be most appreciated. Best wishes. David.

Site Migration and Traffic Help!
Hi Moz, I recently migrated my website with the help of an SEO company using 301 redirects. The reason for the move was to change our CMS from .aspx to Drupal/Wordpress. The homepage (www.shiftins.com) and the blog (www.shiftins.com/blog) were the only two pages that kept the same url. Everything else was redirected. It's been about two months since the redirects were completed and traffic has dropped off about 90%. I'm starting to worry that something was not done properly and my traffic may never return. The process for the redirects seem correct when I checked the work the SEO company did. All pages were duplicated, redirected to individual pages, then the old pages were de-indexed. Are there any insights the community can provide? Please help!

Google cache is showing my UK homepage site instead of the US homepage and ranking the UK site in US
Hi There, When I check the cache of the US website (www.us.allsaints.com) Google returns the UK website. This is also reflected in the US Google Search Results when the UK site ranks for our brand name instead of the US site. The homepage has hreflang tags only on the homepage and the domains have been pointed correctly to the right territories via Google Webmaster Console. This has happened before in 26th July 2015 and was wondering if any had any idea why this is happening or if any one has experienced the same issueFDGjldR

What recommendations do you have for the SEO of this site?
Hello, Could you glance at this site and let me know if you see anything we could improve upon? www.nlpca.com A couple of notes: We're over-optimized for the term "NLP" on the home page. We're removing the footer links soon. We have 2 locations: San Francisco, CA and Salt Lake City, UT. Our main keyword is "NLP Training" but we would like to rank higher for the keyword "NLP". Also note that we're completely white hat, but we have international site-wide backlinks, and a couple of site-wide backlinks in site's footers - all friends and colleagues of ours.

Site wide links Concept
Hi All, All type of site wide links are bad for Google or it depends upon other factors as well? For example if you talk about GoDaddy or any other service provider company they put their links on the footer of other websites so in this condition, Google will harm their rankings or not? Also elaborate the best practices for site wide links.

PDF on financial site that duplicates ~50% of site content
I have a financial advisor client who has a downloadable PDF on his site that contains about 9 pages of good info. Problem is much of the content can also be found on individual pages of his site. Is it best to noindex/follow the pdf? It would be great to let the few pages of original content be crawlable, but I'm concerned about the duplicate content aspect. Thanks --

Should I link my similar sites together?
Hi I currently have two sites within exactly the same market. I've just purchased a third website from someone. Should I link these sites together? (i.e. in the page header should I cross link them or point two of them to the third?) If I do this will it harm them if they are on the same C-Class IP blocks? Is using private domains and different hosting companies considered dodgey in any way? Basically I'm a big wimp and don't want to do anything potentially that might potentially hurt my rankings;)
