Does commenting on relevant articles positively impact our seo?
-
I have read conflicting perspectives on whether or not businesses should partake in relevant conversations on blogs' or articles' comments sections. Does anyone have insight on this?
-
My opinion - if you're posting on blogs/articles purely for SEO value, you're wasting your time.
- most comment sections provide only "nofollow" links
- most good comment sections have so many comments that even if the link is "dofollow" the share of influence passed will be negligible
However! If you're posting good, useful comments on blogs that are relevant to your business, you are contributing to the process of making yourself a subject matter expert/influential. Others will see your helpful contribution and perhaps follow you back to your own site/blog. If you're lucky, you may even be able to generate some interaction with the blog owner, resulting in new promotional opportunities (guest posting?) or social media interaction.
The one SEO side benefit that you do get from good blog commenting is your backlink profile will be more natural with quality nofollow backlinks to go with all your dofollow links. As we've just seen with the Penguin update, the best backlinks aren't just the ones made to "look" natural, but that actually "are" natural!
So - focusing your commenting efforts on a smaller number of relevant blogs and designed to help build your reputation (rather than a huge "spray and pray" approach) will be a better use of your time.

There are a couple of things to look for. Does the link in the comment area have a no follow or do follow attribute? Also how many links are in the comment area? Google factors this in when determining how much link juice it'll pass along. You might benefit regardless if potential clients of yours are looking at those blog posts and then click your link. Example, I have a real estate website and I also comment on the Trulia blog that has a no follow attribute but those looking for an Agent might see my comment on the trulia blog click my link and I now have a lead.

As long as the blogs are contextual relevant to what you are doing. I would not expect a big boost in organics by the majority of these, but could help in different ways.
An example may be a plumber commenting on a topic. A prospect may be researching on that topic, saw the post and goes to the plumber's site (that happens to be local) and hire them.

My feeling is that, when I am logged in using a commenting platform, like Wordpress or-- better yet-- Google, is that it does help.
Google hosts blogs. If you are logged in as a Google user and you write relevant comments on Google blogs, I would think you are demonstrating that you are an active member of Google's web, which is the kind of user they want. If your own websites are tied in with your actively-participating-in-Google, Google profile, I personally think it makes sense.
Other people will tell you that when you comment on blogs you get "no follow" links, which are worthless. This is not true. They are not worth as much, but they are not worthless by any means.
So Google and Wordpress accounts notwithstanding, I still think commenting on blogs is a good idea to create backlinks, even if they are no follow links. If no follow links were "no good" SEOmoz wouldn't measure them right?
So the short answer: Yes, commenting on blogs helps.

Do follow Blog comments
Alright,
Link Building | | sebastiankoch
I would like to know what do you think about this practice in general and hear some answer for my case. My case: I know a net of different blogs that let you put do follow comments as long as they are good. It is not really a lot of spam going on yet, around 6 comments per blog entry. The do follow link is in the form www.xyz.com. Normally a PR 3 after the post ranks.
There are around 20 different blogs. I have already use them and I believe with good results but can´t measure it as I do many other SEO activities. Would you recommend to get to invest time commenting in all of them? Even if all them are in the same C-block? Please feel free to share any experience!

Article Marketing and Penguin
Can sites like Ezine.com and Articlebase.com still be used to create good links? I have heard since Penguin, that article submission sites like those don't work anymore for link building. I have a client who can't put new content on his site and will rely on link building, what is the best way to go about it?? Thanks.

SEO Agencies
I'm eager to hear peoples experiences both good and bad with SEO Agencies. I have tried many. I'm particularly interested in hearing experiences of types of link building. In my experience many SEO agencies build low quality links, that at least in my view are unlikely to stand the test of time, with one or two expections.

Dofollow Blog Comments
I wanna buy dofollow comments, can be there any negative effects? I understand that is a kind of a black hat seo, but i saw many sites who used this type of service and get boosted in the search engine ranking.

Article Marketing - still valid if done right?
Much of the work I do tends to be on a lot of small to medium sized company websites, the kind of businesses that do not have thousands of pounds to spend or the budgets to create reems of quality content. That said, neither do the competition so one approach that has worked well in the past has been article marketing. The approach would usually be to develop some relevant content for the site itself, even if that is just a range of service type landing pages or answers to relevant customer problems and then build links from the article marketing sites (primarily ezinearticles.com). An average approach would be to write articles that are relevant to the individual services, for instance, problems that can be solved by the service and then to link these articles back to the service pages with the desired keywords in the anchor text. Another approach has been to develop an article with the client that solves a common customer problem for their own site and then to write a few summarised versions of the article for the article marketing sites. Again, with the intention of gathering traffic, giving a basic answer and linking back to the main article with the main keywords we wish to rank this page for. For smaller sites serving a fairly tight geographic area this approach, combined with submission to some quality directories (local and niche) has been a strong combo historically. I know there is a lot of junk on the article marketing sites and there could be negative affects from posting loads of pointless articles but using them properly, to broaden the net, provide answers (albeit summarised) and generate links - is this still a valid approach post the Google Farmers update? It may be interesting to see how the article sites like ezine have to tighten up the editorial process now and if the content becomes better across the board, it may possibly strengthen this approach over time. Do any of you still use article marketing as part of your SEO campaigns? If so, what are your strategies and where do you use? Would love to hear your thoughts folks. Marcus

Domain position on site:domain.com search
Hi, After the last week Google algotithm update, my web site index appears on 4th position when I search for site:www.domain.com If I make a simple search for domain or domain.com it ranks on first position. Is this a sign of a penalty ? What would be the cause ? Thanks
