Reducing the site's header to get more content Above the Fold
-
The user bizzer posted the following question on the post (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/guide-to-ads
"I've got my above the fold area very light on advertising since Panda. But reading #4 about the "template" makes me wonder if I should go further and reduce the height of my header area and maybe even remove one of my two sidebars, so as to increase the content-to-template ratio above the fold. Make sense?"
What do you think?

I used to have a site with a huge beautiful image in the banner. It looked great. But it dominated the above-the-fold real estate. My content was pushed way down, so were the ads that bring revenue.
So, I made a small, sleek banner that is simply the domain name, search box and social share buttons.
After that was remove my pages had a big article title shouting at the top of the browser window and a beautiful relevant image at the top of the article.
Instantly.....
-
people were staying longer on the site
-
average pageviews per visitor went up
-
my bandwidth was cut by gigabytes per day
-
revenue went up
Should you do this? I would make a quick test that does not require a lot of work, toss it up for a couple of days and let your analytics tell you if it is a good thing.
You can get a quick answer with two hours of work and two days of statistics.
Try it. Then use data to make your decision. The actions of your visits will instruct you.
Also consider this.... After you remove the banner will you have anything that is beautiful above the fold? Almost every page of my site has a big juicy colorful image at the top of the article. This eye candy pulls people in. I don't think that my results would be the same if I had a big page of boring text and no images.

You can have a page 1 position 1 site but if it doesn't provide what the user wants visually then your conversions from visitor to buyer will suffer. Basic seo still works but google wants quality sites that are popular. It's best to create a site that is easy for search engines to crawl, visually appealing, easy for a user to navigate and provides all the information a user would need. Also make sure to market your site on all social media.

Just always ask yourself this question "Is it good for your users or is it going to benefit them." Trust me like many of us SEO we get caught up in the mindset of "old"SEO practices were we want to optimize for ranking. Google does not want us to write content for search engines, write content for the user. So if it's a good decision that will benefit the users then do it.

Classified ads site and thin content + titles
Hello, i have two questions. Issue 1 is that we are a classified ads site. I started thinking, analyzing why im not ranking even tho i have a lot more content than others and my backlink profile is also better. Googling the advertisements i see that 95% of it is duplicate content. People usually who advertise, add the same add to 10 maybe 30 sites. For google this is duplicate content. Any ideas what to do? I can manually edit ads, to write a bit of unique content, but that is not a long term startegy. Question 2: My titles are all the same - Unique Name - Keyword im trying to rank for. There is around 1000 of such pages. Should i mix the titles up or it is still better to have 1 keyword which will help me to rank?

Some Content The Same
Hello. I am about to publish some landing pages that target different industries that we are trying to market to. X for Accountants
On-Page Optimization | | smithandco
X for Financial Advisors
X for Fitness Trainers
X for X While a good portion of the content is unique on each page "the benefits of using X for accountants" some of the content on the page is duplicate which explains more about how our software works (the features), this will be the same content on every page. Is this considered duplicate content? What should I be aware of in term of Google rankings and penalties? Thanks,

Thousands of 404's showing up from Wordpress Blog!?!?
Hey guys, Have recently seen thousands of 404 errors thrown up from my wordpress blog in Google Search Console. These are URL's trying to link (i'm not sure where from) to other parts of my site, but they are not relative to the site root... infact they are a mix of random folders/subfolders and pages on my site. E.g: http://www.MYSITE.co.uk/blog/how-to/driving-to-the-alps/attachment/2013-land-rover-range-rover-evoque-front-snow-1/st-martin-de-belleville/chalet-st-martin-de-belleville/ski-holidays/ski-holidays/summer/st-martin-de-belleville/summer/your-stay-st-martin-de-belleville.html This is a link to a picture on the blog: http://www.MYSITE.co.uk/blog/how-to/driving-to-the-alps/attachment/2013-land-rover-range-rover-evoque-front-snow-1/ And the rest of it is finding it's own way there! Any ideas? This is Wordpress by the way. Cheers, Paul. p.s. I got no help from the Wordpress community so am posting here! p.p.s I forgot to mention that MOZ is reporting these issues too, but running Screaming Frog does NOT show any 404's at all on my site...

Review rich snippet with reviews hosted on customer feedback company's website?
Is it possible to enable rich snippets for reviews that are not visible on the page in question? A restaurant's Wordpress website mentions the average rating but the actual customer feedback and reviews are displayed on a page on the website of the feedback company. Would it be enough to implement a small widget (displays star rating, number of reviews and links to the review page) and add microdata/J-SON to convince search engines that the reviews are legit? Thanks in advance! Bas

Does this popup get crawled?
Hi, We have a popup on our site that shows examples of different trash cans that can be used for the bags we sell. Here's an example of a page that has the "common cans popup" http://www.plasticplace.com/3-gallon-high-density-6-mic-17x18-clear-trash-bags (This is a screenshot of where to click: http://screencast.com/t/8AvoktAcXtM) Is this content crawled by google? This is how it looks in our source code: view-source:http://www.plasticplace.com/gallon-size/20-30-gallon-trash-bags (start at line 913) Thanks!

International Website(s)
I have an e-commerce site currently selling in Canada and am now looking to branch it into the USA. We have both the .ca and .us domain names, but I am not sure what the best approach to this would be. If we put up a website on the .us domain name it would be virtually the same.. So I would assume we would have a duplicate content issue. What would be the best way to approach this type of situation?

What's the impact of # in the main domain page?

I though that the was something relatively important on a web page for on page optimisation. Did I missed something? What's you opinion on the subject? Thanks for your help!

Post Title - Use the blog's name or not?
In the tile of my post, shoudl I used my blog's name in it at the end or emit the blog name. EX: title of post with keywords | name of blog OR EX: title of post with keywords The site's name is 3 words long, so I'm worrying that those extra words are diluting the keywords in the post's name that I'm trying to target.
