Open Site Explorer - Finding 404s from my competitor's external linking Root Domains
-
I want to find websites that have linked 404s to my competitors. My goal is to contact webmasters who have linked to my competitors with 404s, but I cannot figure out how to get Open Site Explorer to give me that data.
I can easily see this in GWT for my own site, but I need this for my competition instead.
Does anybody know a quick way to get this information?

You could also look to Blekko or now Bing for some of that link data, in addition to SEOmoz, and run it through a status checker like Eppie described.

Depending on how large the OSE list is, you can run it through a free bulk status checker like this one: http://www.seoautomatic.com/unique-tools/bulk-url-checker/
That will return the status codes of the urls you drop in but it only accepts 50 rows per batch. You could easily create a similar tool using a scraper that would accommodate more URLs per run -- using PHP you'd just have to use the curl function to pull in the pages being linked to, then use curl_getinfo($curl_handle,CURLINFO_HTTP_CODE); to grab the response code. If it's a 404, you write that entry to an export file.
Hope that helps!

External links cannot be found
HI, we have a relatively new website, and we know that there are a couple of external links to this site. But in Moz and in KWfinder, it says that there are no backlinks. We do not use robot.txt or noindex, and we have no clue how to make crawlers find the external links so that our DA will be enhanced. Anyone a solution? Marielle

Linkbuild on 'new' or 'old' url?
Hi, I'm trying to rank for a keyword. For the last year and 4 months the rank hasn't changed much. It stays on the 3th page. Within this period the rank has first gone down and then up. Three months ago I started doing linkbuilding for the url the keyword was linked to. This is a main category page. Lately, I don't know when exactly I've discovered that the keyword is ranking for a different url, a product category of these items for 1 brand. I'm wondering if it's wise to shift my focus and start using the 'new' url for linkbuilding? The 'old' url isn't in the top 100 for the keyword. However, if you search for the url in Google, it shows up. And, if I'm advised to shift my focus to the 'new' url, is it advisable to go back and change the backlinks to the 'new' url? A question related to the above one, is there another tool like Open Site Explorer which shows you an overview of the backlinks directing to a deeplink? Like MajestickSEO. I'm trying to get the most extensive overview possible. Thanks in advance.

What is the difference between external followed links and internal followed links.
I have almost 3,000 external links followed and only a tiny amount of internal followed links. My website is doing really badly on google at the mo. I am also an SEO beginner and learning new stuff every day, but am not sure exactly what the difference is! Thanks!

When looking at my site in open site explorer the top results are very dodgy spam and porn sites backlinking to us. Is this having a negative impact on our site?
When using open site explorer to check out who is linking to us I was surprised that the top results are spam and porn sites. These are completely irrelevant links. Does this have a negative impact on our site? What can we do to combat this?
