What happens to content under a category page that is not indexed?
-
We are reevaluating our URL structure. We have a flat architecture but would like to add subfolders per recommendations here and elsewhere. Some of our category pages are ad heavy/content light so we have them no indexed. We do have lots of quality content on the site that we would like to put under some of these keyword categories. Should we leave it flat? If Google does not see that category page then there will be no link from the homepage to the content page?
Now: homepage/content-page
Proposed: homepage/category/content-page (category is not indexed)

Thanks for the reply.
A couple of comments:
- Do you have an opinion about using the structure I listed above if we are no indexing some categories?
- If we are using the keywords in the title, why are you recommending we leave out the category? Will it be overoptimized as that is another concern.
- We have talked about breadcrumbs for our deeper sites. I thought you needed to have categories to implement these. Is this not true?

To make navigations easier you could use breadcrumbs. So when the result show up in SERPS you can get
Home > Category > Post
and the breadcrumbs should also be prominently displayed on the site. I believe it heps spiders and users alike in figuring out the contents structure on your site.
In regards to the proposed structure .. is the category a keyword you would like to target on those pages ? For example if you have Home/Melbourne/CafeHome/Melbourne/MoviesIt would make sense to include Melbourne in there if you are targeting that location .But for something likeHome/News/Keyword-Post-Title Home/News/Keyword-Post-Title2Where your keywords are formed in the post title rather than the category , I would leave it out.One other thing to consider is when changing the structure , you should follow the best practices and make sure you redirect the old ones to the new ones . This is a good starting place : http://www.seomoz.org/blog/should-i-change-my-urls-for-seoAt the end of the day , it depends on what content you offer and you alone can make the decision .. if having the category in the url will help you rank better

Page Indexing without content
Hello. I have a problem of page indexing without content. I have website in 3 different languages and 2 of the pages are indexing just fine, but one language page (the most important one) is indexing without content. When searching using site: page comes up, but when searching unique keywords for which I should rank 100% nothing comes up. This page was indexing just fine and the problem arose couple of days ago after google update finished. Looking further, the problem is language related and every page in the given language that is newly indexed has this problem, while pages that were last crawled around one week ago are just fine. Has anyone ran into this type of problem?

New pages on my site usually shoot right into the index - often in under 24 hours. Lately they are taking weeks to get into the index. Are your new pages slow to index lately? Thanks for anything that you can report.

Home Page .index.htm and .com Duplicate Page Content/Title
I have been whittling away at the duplicate content on my clients' sites, thanks to SEOmoz's pro report, and have been getting push back from the account manager at register.com (the site was built here and the owner doesn't want to move it). He says these are the exact same page and he can't access one to redirect to the other. Any suggestions? The SEOmoz report says there is duplicate content on both these urls: Durango Mountain Biking | Durango Mountain Resort - Cascade Village http://www.cascadevillagehotel.com/index.htm Durango Mountain Biking | Durango Mountain Resort - Cascade Village http://www.cascadevillagehotel.com/ Your help is greatly appreciated! Category URL Duplicate Content
I've recently been hired as the web developer for a company with an existing web site. Their web architecture includes category names in product urls, and of course we have many products in multiple categories thus generating duplicate content. According to the SEOMoz Site Crawl, we have roughly 1600 pages of duplicate content, I expect primarily from this issue. This is out of roughly 3600 pages crawled. My questions are: 1. Fixing this for the long term will obviously mean restructuring the URLs for the site. Is this worthwhile and what will the ramifications be of performing such a move? 2. How can I determine the level and extent of the effects of this duplicated content? 3. Is it possible the best course of action is to do nothing? The site has many, many other issues, and I'm not sure how highly to prioritize this problem. In addition, the IT man is highly doubtful this is causing an SEO issue, and I'm going to need to be able to back up any action I request. I do feel I will need to strongly justify any possible risks this level of site change could cause. Thanks in advance, and please let me know if any more information is needed.
