Would anyone reccomend hiring an outside company for social bookmarking?
-
I hired http://www.manualsocialbookmarking.com/ to take care of social bookmarking for one of my clients. I am finally starting to see the links created from this with my keyword as the anchor text in SEO Moz. I know that they are not "great" links, but my keyword is doing very well (fluctuating between #1 and #2 on Google).
I don't feel like hiring this company hurt my SEO, but I am scared to do i for any of my other clients (especially because of the penguin update).
Does anyone have any thoughts? Is it work the risk to hire them again and get some links for my other clients?

My bet is that the people who do this bookmarking don't give a hoot about your site. They are only doing this as a task... and the only traffic that you will get from these bookmarks is the person who visits your site one time to make them.
I would not call these spam links. I would call them dangerous spam links.

If it is done professionally then do it, because it is still a good way to promote your web presence as well as generate high quality backlinks to your site and provide additional traffic. Penguin update was designed to target spam links only, so if you are not spamming then you are safe. You can achieve a lot with social bookmarking if it is submitted to the correct social news sites and targeted sites for your specific niche/audience.

I hope that my competitors are doing this.
Six months ago I would have thought that this would be very very low on the effectiveness scale - especially if you are targeting anything moderately competitive or better.
Today, after penguin, I think that it would be ineffective and slightly risky.

Can a company group have reciprocal links on their company websites without being penalised by Google?
A client which is part of a group of businesses all within one industry but have different purposes has come to us aith a "brilliant idea" that they all have a blog on their website that links to every business within their group. We are pretty sure that this will be seen as "black hat" by Google, but just wanted to see what you all thought? Thanks!

How Effective Are Links Between The Same Company's Websites With Different Domain Extensions?
Morning! The main competitor of an eCommerce site I'm working on has a total of 31 sites for 31 different countries. Each one of these sites has a different domain extension (.com, .co.uk, .fr, .it etc.), and every single one of these sites' pages links to all the other homepages through a dropdown menu on the navigation bar. When I pop the .co.uk URL (our main competitor) into Open Site Explorer, I'm advised they have a 45,079 links from 475 domains. If I look at 'just discovered' links, most are from their own sites - I guess MOZ picks these up every time a new page is created. Now, these guys are huge in the UK. They rank in the top 10 for pretty much every single search term and, to put it into some kind of perspective, their Search Metrics score is 33,000 compared to our measly 160! Don't get me wrong, they do get some decent links from authoritative sites, but it seem most of their links are from their own sites. How does Google view these? Does my competitor have these thousands of 'internal' backlinks to thank for their current position? I've just checked their .kr URL and this has 12.5 million(!) links from just 450 domains. Do every single one of these links pass equity? Or does Google just look at one from each domain? Thanks, Lewis

An SEO companies position
One worrying thought following a meeting with a friend in the Poker industry was when he told me he heard some rival companies tried to spam other sites with paid listings a few years ago ? Does this happen all the time ? Also could it happen in other industries ? I was worried when hearing this news and then thought about an SEO companies position in all of this. Could an SEO company be falsely blamed for this sort of behaviour ? Is it is better to cover these things in contracts with customers.

Social Media Links
I use a social media plugin to link my blog to my social media profiles, and there is an option to make these links nofollow. I'm not worried about losing link juice to my social profiles. Is there any advantage in this case to using nofollow?

Is there a cost per acuqistion figure I can quote that if I hire an agency to link build that we can guarantee a level of increased traffic from Google?
I am looking to justify to a pubilsher the cost outlay to hire an agency to do white hat link building for me as we do not have time. (the site is fully optimised but we lack the inbound links our competitors have) - is there a way I can explain in terms of numbers ie page impressions that if we build for eg 10k high quality anchor text links into our site we will get x thousand more page impressions as our rankings in the search engines will increase? Just need a justification before the budget is allocated.

How to do SEO for famous fortune 500 companies
Hello SEOmoz, I have a question to you guys. How typically SEO should be done to fortune 500 comnpanies who are very much famous offline. The problem I see is any links built gets attention and media can make a big deal out of it. For eg: The recent JCPenney SEO issue. Though their paid links got them penalized, other traditional methods can also not fit their stratgy. Here are the traditional methods and how it can not be applied to them. Commenting on blogs - Well, it is reputation here. If some one sees a link on blog comments, it might be fishy and can be named as blog spammers. Forum marketing - Same here. The reputation of clients can go down. Paid post / Paid links - Again risky Please suggest how to build link for type of famous clients. Please do not give stratgic level of advice, but be more specific in your answer. For eg: Do this kind of link building and don't do y. etc., Looking forward for ur answers. Thanks
