Root domain or sub domain? WWW. or NOT WWW......
-
I am a little confused! I use vidahost whom I have to say I find very helpful. I currently have the domains www.fentonit.co.uk and www.fentonit.com, now the websites was set up using the www.fentonit.com and I have www.fentonit.co.uk as a parked domain pointed to the www.fentonit.com.
Confused yet?
Now because I wanted the website to show www.fentonit.co.uk I added some code I was given by the guys to the .hta access file and viola up it comes as the .co.uk which is what I wanted.
So if your still here and havent A: Killed yourself yet or B: Went to the Pub
Then my questions are:
1. Is there going to be an issue from an SEO point of view having my site set up this way and if so how do I resolve it?
2. Would I be better using the root domain fentonit.co.uk (I think this is the root domain, although it iscurrently parked and pointed) as opposed to the sub www domain?.......and finally.......?
3. If it is set up as I stated what exactly would be my root domain, would it be the .co.uk or the .com?
Sorry and I completely understand if your not interested in answering it but if you do.....Thanks in advance and I'll take you to the pub...lol
Craig
www.fentonit.co.uk ( i think)

I'm back:
Ok I promise this is the end of it:
Would I be correct in saying that I need to set up a 301 redirect for: http://www.fentonit.com, http://fentonit.com & http://fentonit.co.uk to be perfectly correct and will it be suffice to do this a page level or do I need to do this on every page on every url if I am letting Google know my preferred Domain?
and as the famous Inspector Columbus said....oh just one more thing .............Do I need to do this for an index page also.....?
I may have cracked it, when I run a checker this is what I received back for all the URL's:

Hi Craig,
I would use only one site to be honest. I realize there may be a small benefit but you would essentially have to juggle the duplicate content issue I understand if you want a blank page or if somebody goes to that URL to redirect their traffic to your main site. I have found personally using DYN to be very effective and a fantastic company you can use their webhop service for very little money take a look this would do it. http://dyn.com/dns/webhop/ or if you're current DNS registrar allows for it which it should. Maybe set up the Cname I would do something similar to what shown here
http://www.active-domain.com/help/help-web-forwarding.htm
I know there are a lot of forwarding services out there that will not interfere with the current 301 redirect you have on your main site. here is how Webhop would work with your current registrar http://dyn.com/support/webhops-and-redirections/#secondary
Hope this helps man,
Thomas

Hi Thomas,
Just when I thought I was out of the woods.....lol. It would appear that when I try to redirect www.fentonit.com to www.fentonit.co.uk it gives me this error:
"You cannot redirect to http://www.fentonit.co.uk. It would cause a redirection loop because /home/fentonit/public_html/ is at the same place as /home/fentonit/public_html/."
The reason I want to use the .co.uk as the main as I heat that there is a small benefit in using .co.uk for UK based sites.
What do you think?
Kind Regards,
Craig
-
Hi Craig,
I would definitely use a 301 redirect from the name you least like. So if you're root server is going to be www.fentonit.com I would set up www.fentonit.co.uk to redirect to www.fentonit.com along with having the home page canonical read
this will be different for every page so if it is "about us" you will put in the entire URL is seen in this
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394
my honest opinion the easiest thing you can do to save yourself a lot of hassle stick with one domain. I know it seems hard but over the long run optimizing 2 domains is a nightmare in comparison to just having one. I would use just the .com I hope this answers your question and is of help man. We have all been there at one time. Nice site by the way.
Sincerely,

Thats brill Marcus,
Thanks a lot for your help, it took me a little to grasp this one. I can it seem use the Cpanel to set redirects without having to implement the code and then as a fail safe I'll Specify preferred domain directly with Google to Keep em Happy!!
Hopefull no more questions for a couple of hours, ....lol
Cheers for your support.!!
-
Hey, yeah, that is exactly the case, you just have the same website running on four URL's so it is technically a duplicate.
You need to implement the 301 redirects ideally but you can also specify a preferred domain in Webmaster Tools.
Details here:
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=44231
Do that for now and then set the 301 for users when your guy can get online.
Shout if I can help.

Hi Marcus & Thanks for the response! Now Im almost getting it but one problem is that I am not responsible for all the techy coding my developer is and he's in Spain - lucky him...........but you probably back from the pub by now and heres where I am at! (Full 12" Ext Remix Version)
It would appear that my domain in use is www.fentonit.co.uk which points to www.fentonit.com as a permament redirect with or without (www) which is fine,
however when I use a tool to check these 4 Url's:
http://www.fentonit.co.uk/
http://www.fentonit.com/
http://fentonit.co.uk
http://fentonit.com, it would appear to inform me that they are all identical as per below:
Which is as I thought and as they should be!!

I used all four URL's and they all came back with a 200 Server Response Code:
for www.fentonit.co.uk, this is what I recieved so I am thinking that I should have this is my primary domain and 301 redirects for the other 3?? Or do i just need to do it for the www.fentonit.com/ ?

Hi Thomas and many thanks for taking the time in responding. Yes duplicate content was one of my concerns, as would be canonical issues; Now it would appear that my domain in use is www.fentonit.co.uk which points to www.fentonit.com as a permament redirect with or without (www) which is fine,

Hi Craig,
It looks to me like you may be producing duplicate content in Google eyes put both of your URLs into this tool http://tools.seobook.com/general/website-comparison/
you'll get duplicate content. The thing I'm worried about the most are interested and I should say is where are you pointing your if you have a favorite http://www.fentonit.com/ or http://www.fentonit.co.uk
http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=139394
I would take the one you prefer make it your canonical URL then redirect without a cloak with your other domain to your site. If it were me to be completely honest ( trust me I do understand the .com is a great domain to have however been in the UK you want the .co.uk) if it were me I would stick with the .com easier make it my canonical then you won't have any trouble ranking as you have a nice site that I would not risk staying in Google sandbox any longer than needed.
I would personally include the WWW. in my final domain I know it does not matter to Google however when people are linking to you they're more likely to type in WWW. so I personally would stick with it that way and the 301 redirect you can have someone type in whatever they want WWW. or Not it all goes to the same place. I hope I was of some help to you.
Respectfully,
Thomas Von Zickell

Hey Craig
You have four possible URLs here:
fentonit.co.uk
www.fentonit.co.uk
fentonit.com
www.fentonit.comYou want to sort this out like how you have suggested and then check the http response codes to ensure that you are getting all variations redirected to www.fentonit.co.uk. If you are using htaccess something like this should do the job (server setups vary sometimes)
RewriteBase /
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^fentonit.co.uk [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.fentonit.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^fentonit.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.fentonit.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.fentonit.com [NC] RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.fentonit.co.uk/$1 [L,R=301]
You may also have an index page that you need to take care of
RewriteCond %{THE_REQUEST} ^[A-Z]{3,9}\ /index.php\ HTTP/ RewriteRule ^index.php$ http://www.fentonit.co.uk/ [R=301,L]
Also, it makes sense that all your internal links point to the www.fentonit.co.uk root and if you are a real perfectionist that any external links use the same root as well.
I'm off to the pub
Marcus

Is an iframe redirect on the same Domain bad for SEO
Good morning. We have a vendor that has created a landing page with content that we want to use. Because of the way we built the site, the only way to use the content is to create an i-frame. The i-frame is re-directingon the same Domain. Would we benefit from the SEO Content?

Redirecting non www site
Hello Ladies and Gentlemen. I 100% agree with the redirecting of the non www domain name. After all we see so many times, especially in MOZ how the two different domains contain different links, different DA and of course different PA. So I have posed the question to our IT company, "How would we go about redirecting our non www domain to the www version?", "Where would we do that?", " we cant do the redirect on our webserver because the website is listed as an IP address, not a domain name, so would we do the redirect somewhere at GoDaddy?" who is currently maintain our DNS record So here is the response from IT: " I would setup a CNAME record in DNS (GoDaddy), such that no matter if you go to the bare domain, or the www, you end up in the same place. As for SEO, having a 301 redirect for your bare domain isn't necessary, because both the bare domain and the www are the same domain. 301 is a redirect for "permanently moved" and is common when you change domain names. Using the bare domain or the www are NOT DIFFERENT DOMAINS, so the 301 would not be accurate, and you'd be telling engines you've moved, when you haven't - which may negatively impact your rank. It sounds to me that IT is NOT recommending the redirect. How can this be? Or are we talking about two different things? Will the redirect cause the melt down as the IT company suggests? Or do they nut understand SEO?

Duplicate Content www vs. non-www and best practices
I have a customer who had prior help on his website and I noticed a 301 redirect in his .htaccess Rule for duplicate content removal : www.domain.com vs domain.com RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com [NC]
Intermediate & Advanced SEO | | EnvoyWeb
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com/$1 [R=301,L,NC] The result of this rule is that i type MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com in the browser and it redirects to www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com I wonder if this is causing issues in SERPS. If I have some inbound links pointing to www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com and some pointing to MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com, I would think that this rewrite isn't necessary as it would seem that Googlebot is smart enough to know that these aren't two sites. -----Can you comment on whether this is a best practice for all domains?
-----I've run a report for backlinks. If my thought is true that there are some pointing to www.www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com and some to the www.MY-CUSTOMER-SITE.com, is there any value in addressing this?0 -
Renaming your domain from an existing live domain and SEO implications - Please Help *shudder*
Please see the details below. Site A: http://south-african-holiday.mobi is an existing site that is our best site. It is Joomla 3.1 and runs all our ecommerce. Site B: http//www.southerncircle.com/ is our original and has the best DA but is out of date and pretty clunky. joomla 1.5 and all bookings (tour site) are redirected to Site A for processing. Instead of redesigning the Site A I'd like to change the domain name of http://south-african-holiday.mobi -> http://southerncircle.com So far my reading and research (Thanks MOZ for awesome forum!) has provided me with: 1. Do the SEO groundwork. i.e. remove dead links from both sites. Delete useless content and generally tidy up both sites. 2. Map all pages from site a: http://southerncircle.com -> http://south-africa-holiday/ so that the existing pages that have good ranking will have a home on the new site. 3. When ready do a small sample 301 redirect from: http://southerncircle.com to http://south-africa-holiday.mobi. 4. arghhhh now I'm stuck ..... If I redirect to this site then I lose my http://southerncircle.com domain which is what I want to keep....I just want the .mobi site to move to the southerncircle.com site.... I don't consider myself totally thick but this is really confuseing the *$%# out of me PLEASE could you give me some insight here. I'm sure it has been done before without completely losing the sites seo ranking and sending my site into SEO oblivion. If there are any JOOMLA gurus that have done this I'd love to hear from you as well. Many thanks in advance.

Need to move highest content pages into a sub-domain and want to minimize the loss of traffic - details inside!
Hi All! So the company that I work for owns two very strong domains in the information security industry. There are two separate sections on each site that draws a ton of long tail SEO traffic. For our corporate site we have a vulnerability database where people search for vulnerabilities to research, and find out how to remediate. On our other website we have an exploit database where people can look up exploits in order to see how to patch an attackers attack path. We are going to move these into a super database under our corporate domain and I want to ensure that we maintain or minimize the traffic loss. The exploit database which is currently on our other domain yields about three quarters of the traffic to the domain. It is obviously OK if that traffic goes directly to this new subdomain. What are my options to keep our search traffic steady for this content? There are thousands and thousands of these vulnerabilities and exploits so it would not make sense to 301 redirect all of them. What are some other options and what would you do?

How to move website to new domain?
We have a website that has run under the same domain name for the past 10 years. We have built up a decent amount of SEO "mojo" (and traffic) over time, however, the original domain name no longer applies to the business model. A little over 1 year ago we started using a new brand name for the website and created a landing page for that domain name. Everything on that landing page links over to pages on the original domain name (to preserve the SEO value that we have built up over the years). We would like to move all (or most) of the pages/content to the new domain name. Would using 301 redirects be the safest, most effective way of doing this? I have heard of other people doing it this way, and often they will see their traffic drop for a few weeks before it eventually comes back. Anyone else had experience with this? What worked? What didn't? Thanks!

Exact match domain marketing?
Hi All, I've managed to secure a couple of exact match domains that are closely related to my main site but I'm a bit unsure of how to make best use of them. My plan is to generate revenue by ranking high for the exact match terms, moving the visitor onto the main site to take their details and payment. Naturally I want this satelite site to be very similar so that I can keep the brand continuety going and maintain a smooth transition to the main site. My main concerns however are: Will I get punished for using the same Navigation menu, logo and code as my main site? The navigation menu will link to pages on the main site, and this satelite site will most likely only consist of an index page and about 5 - 10 individual content pages. 2)I want the branding on this satelite site to be the same as my main site. Will I be punished for the difference in branding vs domain name? I know the SE's are unlikely to pick it up because the logo is an image but is there a risk of human editing? I want to link from the main site to the satelite site to give it a bit of a boost and to get through a possible sandbox. If the satelite has numerous links to the main site and the main site is linking to the satelite site will there be any benefit? Never tried to create a site like this so a bit nervous about impacting the main site. Thank in advance.

Different Geographies - New Domain or Subdomain?
I have a site that is successful on the SERPs for a certain geography, let's call it City A (I'm sure you can't tell what it is from my username). I'm moving to a new city in another state so I will be building my business in this area (City B). Should I create a new domain for City B with CityBWebsiteDesign.com or should I create a sub-domain called CityB.BrandableCompanyName.com and just redirect CityBWebsiteDesign.com to the URL for offline marketing purposes only? My current website BrandableCompanyName.com has some authority with Google. Will it be better to building something on the sub-domain and get any sort of cross-benefits or are there really no benefits to be had between sub-domains? The benefit of going with CityBWebsiteDesign.com would be having a keyword rich URL but I would basically be starting from zero with building authority. Specific experience you've had with this or cited examples would be great for the discussion! Thanks,
