Link velocity - still a significant ranking factor?
-
We have recently taken over the SEO for a site which had a pretty poor back link profile, lots of comment links, directories etc.
Although the quality of the link was very questionable, the previous SEO were maintaining a decent link velocity. Obviously I have no intention of carrying on with spammy crap links, and am looking to build some good fresh content.
This will obviously slow down the link velocity quite considerably, is that in itself likely to hurt SERPs?
Thanks in advance

sorry

From what I have seen on sites that do not have active linkbuilding efforts - links arrive at a random pace, except for occasional spikes which are randomly distributed through time.

If it is an older site that acquired a lot of basic level links fast and you are going to be slowing down the process to increase quality I would not worry too much. Think about it from the search engine perspective for a second and how a normal linking trend, similar to your situation, could go.
a new site pops up its in trend people like it, maybe it even goes viral for a period of time, and a lot of links start pouring in. Then just like everything its 15 minutes are up, links drop. Then it comes out with the next hot thing and links shoot up again. Then its old news. Then its hot again..... ect
If you make good content for this guy, you are probably going to follow this trend. You will be doing it in a more legitimate way but if your client is already ranking with those bad links then your quality should reign supreme because good quality will bring good quantity (if done right).
As far as link velocity, no I'm sure you will not lose serp rankings because you built 0 links in a month. the only way this works is if your competition is out linking you (both q's) and you lose rankings that way. I dont think google says well this guy didnt do shit this month.... PUNISH HIM!!!

Quality always wins over quantity, or at least that's what I tell my wife.

Need advice: How to replace a high-ranking pdf with a landing page -- without dropping much in rank?
Hi! We have a pdf of a white paper on our site that ranks #1 for a niche term. We are now exploring the idea of building a landing page for this paper with an overview (2-3 paragraphs) and a registration form for interested parties to fill out in order to access the paper. Do you think there'd be any hope of ensuring the new landing page would rank almost as well eventually (top 3)? I'm thinking a key consideration would be preserving the link juice from the existing links that are coming into the pdf, and that 301 redirecting the pdf URL to the new landing page URL could help with that. Am I right? Or would it be better to try to reach out to the linking sites and ask them to update their links (seems daunting). Any advice/opinions on this situation would be appreciated. (If folks think that there would be a significant risk of permanently dropping out of the top 5 by attempting this, we would likely choose to leave the pdf ungated as is.) Thanks!! -John

Link building strategy - my weak link!
Please help me understand link building. I've read the articles on Moz, but they seem vague to me. Specific questions: 1. How do I get my webpage on good quality sites? 2. Guest blogging? Good or not? 3. What about when people pick up one of our blog stories and publish it on their site with a link back? Is that bad now because it is duplicate content??? 4. Forum posts with a link in the signature? Good or not? 5. Directories - I get it that these are no longer good... are they severely negative? Should I take them down. 6. PR - Looks like this is bad... right??? 7. Youtube - any value? 8. Pinterst, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram? Any value to backlinks here? 9. What about sites like redit? 10. Anything else I should consider?

Old links
I am looking to remove some old directory links that now look spammy. Some years ago the site was redesigned. The links are all to the old pages url, which is 301 redirected to the new. If we remove the 301 and let the page 404, will that suffice in Googles eyes?

Will a link from a competitor help me to out rank them?
Greetings mozers, One of my competitors and I both rank on the first page for our main keyword. They have 37k+ links, me only like 300 or so. My company actually has a business location though. This other site is just a listing of locations and they build sites for most of my competitors. If I were able to get listed on their site, would that make me a stronger competitior with them? And we would probably only get a brand term link from them but not a main keyword anchor text. Will it be as effective to get the link from them if it's only for my brand name? Thanks, Cy

Link to those that link to you? Worthwhile?
We have thousands and thousands of sites that link to a domain we are working on, many with low page authority and high domain (bloggers, forum posts, etc). Has anyone experimented with linking to the pages that link to you (not from your site) but from other means in an effort to boost their quality? I'm not sure what method we would use, maybe some relevant blog comments or social votes. But curious if this could be an effective method.

Porn link ...
I just ran https://www.majesticseo.com report for back links and showed me that I have one link at porn site ... not sure if it will be appropriate to post it here. The link was discovered on 03.05.11 and when I visited today link is not there... I dont know who put that link there. Can I get penalty for that from google? Can it be a mistake?
