SEOmoz recommended Directories
-
SEOmoz recommends a bunch of directories and some cost money. How much influence do these directories have? Is it worth investing in some where the category makes sense or all where the category makes sense?
-
Ok this is my plan... Tell me what you think, I'm going to google each of the directories brand nanes I submitted to off of seomoz, and if any of them are not ranking #1 in google for their brand names I will request a link removal... Should that suffice?
-
That's an awesome rule of thumb and how I look at it too (though you put it much better than I would have).

My rule of thumb: If the directory would be a great place to have a presence if Google didn't exist, then do it. Otherwise, I tend to steer clear, post-Penguin.
-
Ahh man just submitted to a handful of them...
-
On that page they actually went through the list of SEOmoz's directories. (I think SEOmoz will be removing that directory list soon)
-
What about the directories that are recommended by SEOmoz? Are these good directories?
-
I just want to remind everyone that since the Penguin update, we need to be very careful about directories. Here is a great article about Directories and with an analysis of SEOmoz's directory list.

Hello,
Directories are good for improving the authority's area and give a result in initial projects. Choose the right category also produces some good results.
All the sites I get a SEO work, I do the registration in directories, think that each one is one more domain with a link to your site. The vast majority, the links are follow and to register the job is too small, you spend a few minutes and sign up for a lot of sites.
The results are not surprising, but is a support for the initial work of linkbuilding, I think it's worth, including investing in some. The advantage of directories is that the domains are usually strong and is very easy to gain links to your site: D

Sub Directories Domain & Page Crawl Depth
Hi, I just bought an old domain with good backlinks and authority, that domain was technology product formerly. So, I want to make this domain for my money site. The purpose of this website is to serve technological information like WordPress tutorial and etc (free software or drivers). And I just installed a sub directory on this domain like https://maindomain.com/subdirectory/ and this directory I made for a free software like graphics drivers download (NVIDIA or AMD). What you think with this website? Is it make sense? Wait, I just added this domain to my campaign at MOZ and the result shown my sub directory was 6 times of crawl depth. Is it good for directory or I need to move the sub directory to my main site? Thank you, hope someone answer my confuse. Best Regard, Matthew.

URL Parameter Setting Recommendation - Webmaster Tools, Breadcrumbs & 404s
Hi All, We use a parameter called "breadCrumb" to drive the breadcrumbs on our ecommerce product pages that are categorized in multiple places. For example, our "Blue Widget" product may have the following URLs: http://www.oursite.com/item3332/blue-widget

http://www.oursite.com/item3332/blue-widget_?breadCrumb=BrandTree_
http://www.oursite.com/item3332/blue-widget_?breadCrumb=CategoryTree1_
http://www.oursite.com/item3332/blue-widget_?breadCrumb=CategoryTree2_ We use a canonical tag pointing back to the base product URL. The parameter only changes the breadcrumbs. Which of the following, if any, settings would you recommend for such a parameter in GWT: Does this parameter change page content seen by the user? Options: Yes/No
How does this parameter affect page content? Options: Narrows/Specifies/Other Currently, google decided to automatically assign the parameter as "Yes/Other/Let Googlebot Decide" without notifying us. We noticed a drop in rankings around the suspected time of the assignment. Lastly, we have a consistent flow of products that are discontinued that we 404. As a result of the breadcrumb parameter, our 404s increase significantly (one for each path). Would 800 404 crawl errors out of 18k products cause a penalty on a young site? We got an "Increase in '404' pages' email from GWT, shortly after our rankings seemed to drop. Thank you for any advice or suggestions! Doug0 -
Should I switch all paid-for directory backlinks to nofollow backlinks?
Hello Mozzers, I'm looking at a niche party services directory (b2c), established for over 8 years. They're not using nofollow tags on backlinks from their paid entries (free entries only get phone numbers and not backlinks). If they suddenly switch all the paid-for backlinks in their directory to nofollow backlinks, might that have some kind of negative impact. Switching sounds like the best way forward, but I want to avoid any unintended consequences. Perhaps I should only implement this change gradually? Add URL parameters in SEOMoz as per GWT?
Hi, this may be a tall order, or maybe it's already in place and I'm behind the times! Any chance on getting something like this going? Even handier, have SEOMoz import these settings directly from GWT. The issue comes into play when looking at my duplicate page content reports; I'm guessing that SEOMoz will continue showing these as duplicates even after I have tweaked GWT to read them properly. Haven't tested this theory as I just started down this road on GWT myself. Thanks. 🙂

Building a Large Local Services Directory - Subdomain Needed?
In 2012 we will be rolling out a directory of local services for our industry. This will ultimately be thousands of additional pages, with city/zip searching, individual provider pages etc. The main reason is for UX -- providing local resources for our industry to compliment the online experience (we're an online B2C retailer) My question is if there are pros/cons to putting this on a subdomain, or if having it on the root is ideal. I don't see a huge influx of backlinks (making a sub fine) but I suppose that could change down the road. I do see some indexing benefits for new terms like 'service x in los angeles' etc, but that would also be fine on a sub. It feels like it would be cleaner to keep separate and on a sub, but maybe we're missing something. We certainty don't want to hurt anything on our primary site which drives the business. Thoughts?

Content on New Domain or Sub Directory of Existing Domain?
I have a client with a well aged, high DA site. They rank well for their wedding photography business in several cities. They are launching a new service which is related to photography (photobooths and flipbooks) which they built and developed content on a new domain. The existing domain has 0 links with a DA of 1. The site is brand new.. Is there any drawback to moving the existing content on the new domain to a sub directory of the high authority domain? EX: http://domain.com/newcompany The look, feel, and design of the new site / service is much different than the high DA site. My thoughts are that this will give them an automatic step up, especially since they will be marketing this in several major cities. Also, since the design will be different, if it is good to move to the subdir, should we put the new company name in the subdir folder or something keyword friendly like domain.com/photobooth as opposed to domain.com/newcompanyname. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
