Anyone have any experience with freelance graphic designer sites?
-
I'm wanting to get a few things designed for our site, and I was curious if anyone has any experience using any of the companies online where you can hire graphic designers.
It looks like a lot of these companies use people over seas, and although some of them are talented, I don't think their styles are the same as I'm used to here. (Hope that doesn't sound bad...I'm not meaning it like that.)
Does anyone have any suggestions for a good company to use online? Thanks.

Some good suggestions here. I'd add a few more.
First and foremost, make sure it's very clear who is expected to do what.
Some designers are great at coming up with a concept and creating the basic layout of the interior pages. But they fall down at the detailed execution level. Some designers think it's the job of the client or consultant to actually populate the pages, position the images, and futz around with fonts.
One designer said to me: "You know WordPress. Just go ahead and insert the content."
Umm, no. I do know WordPress, but I'm not a designer. That's why I hire designers. My understanding of the scope of work is not "some assembly required." I want to buy a furnished and decorated house, not plans and a pretty picture of what the finished product MIGHT look like.
But: my bad for not making this clear. The designer in this case was an honest and competent guy. He just had a different idea about the scope of work.
You should also try to get a feel for whether the designer will be doing the coding himself or subcontracting to others. Sometimes the subcontractors do shoddy work. Many are offshore and are paid a pittance.
Finally, I would never hire a designer until I had detailed telephone conversation with two or three previous clients (who are NOT friends or relatives.)

I am in a similar situation to Noah's Dad & a respected colleague recommended CrowdSpring (www.CrowdSpring.com) - I have not worked with them yet, but am wondering if anyone can comment specifically on past experience with their work?

I have gotten great work, very nice work, from oDesk.
HOWEVER.... you really need to write very tight specifications, show them samples and look at their portfolio. Also, check their screenshots to be sure that the job is not jumping off track.
But, I have been very happy with almost all of the work I have gotten there.

I agree. It's ridiculous how little some of these designers make. It seems that all of them are overseas though. If they make $100 it means a hell of a lot more than $100 means to the average North American.
My uncle owns a pretty prominent graphic design firm that has done work for very large organizations across the globe. For the logo design projects that I've done through 99 designs, he said he'd have to be paid $3k just to consider the project. And I believe I got the logo done for $300. When he looked at the finished product, he had his fair share of critiques, but his observations weren't ones that the average consumer would notice.

99 designs is cool. Traditional graphic designers don't like it htough. Compare em to sweat shops, and say things like "you have to worry about if its copied work on sites like those"
however it depends what you are trying to do!
-
Thanks man. I'm certainly check it out.

Odesk is half decent as the people have profiles, reviews etc.
Have you ever been to TK Max store? There is some great stuff, but it's kind of hard to find and requires some real rummaging around. Well, ODesk is kind of like that, there are some great people on their, but be prepared to spend a few hours looking!
-
Thanks man. Do you know of any sites like that off hand?
-
I'm lucky in having an in-house graphic designer, but I have used these sites for side projects and to help me out of a corner in the past. I can't imagine that my experience is true for everything, as they wouldn't be sustainable otherwise - however I've not had great results.
The problem for me has been that so many of the freelancers using the sites focus on how little they can do to meet their obligation. It's not entirely their fault to be fair: Many of the sites are set up like reverse auctions that only serve to drive prices down and that is never a way to ensure quality.
if I was going down that path I'd find sites that specialise in design freelancers rather than general odesk/freelancer type sites. Particular places that let people use the site as a way to build their reputation rather than just as a way to generate lots of leads quickly.
I am sure that plenty of great designers use them. If you can find a site where the proportion of the good ones is higher you'll probably save a lot of time.

I've used 99 designs and I've been quite satisfied with the end product. They do all sorts of types of design work from logos to wordpress themes.
If you don't like what the community of designers provide you, you can get your money back.
There's a few shady people in the community. I had one or two designers on logo design project that just copied something and tweaked it, but within their community, it was caught and that person was disciplined.

Backlinks in PDF's created on my site causing algo demotion.
I have a few questions. My website allows people to create custom 'puzzle' and education (i.e. "math") worksheets - enter your 'school spelling list' - I can make a crossword or many other puzzles (PDF form) from it. I recently realized that I was being penalized for the backlink I placed in each one. I placed in each PDF ("Created with mydomain.com Crossword maker") - I was linking the "crossword maker" back to my site. BAD! I am now aware of this. I have recently disavowed several hundred backlinks where people have posted those PDF's online - and have started to see a big recovery in ranking and traffic. My questions about my citation: "Created with mydomain.com Crossword maker":
Branding | | Addict
1. Moving forward, can I leave the same citation on each PDF - but just link 'mydomain.com' back to my domain (not the keywords, just the domain)
2. If not, can I just leave the unlinked text on the PDF: i.e. "Created with mydomain.com Crossword maker" -no embeded links at all.
3. Is it OK to assert that they must leave the "citation" (linked/unlinked?) to post them on their website as a part of my terms of use? If not, is there an acceptable way to get credit for giving away free custom content - other than asking for an 'optional' link back? I have thousands more of these that I would need to end up disavowing so knowing exactly what is permissible is extremely important to me moving forward. I have watched this whiteboard Friday: https://moz.com/blog/backlinks-maximize-benefits-avoid-problems-whiteboard-friday (I am looking for clarification on what I can put in the original content I essentially syndicate - the content is different on each and every PDF, except for the citation). Thank you so much for your time and help!0 -
Country sites - TLD's or sub directories?
Dear All, We have several brands which operate a several languages and currently have a set up like this: www.[BRAND].com/ = English global www.[BRAND].com/de = German www.[BRAND].com/fr = French … Each subdirectory is a completely different site so I was wondering would it be better to use TLD’s for each country site in order to hold more equity in the search engine if we used: www.[BRAND].com/ = English global www.[BRAND].de = German www.[BRAND].fr = French Are country top level domains the way to go? If we wanted to change language within a country site should we use the following? www.[BRAND].be = Belgium English www.[BRAND].be/nl-NL/ = Belgium Dutch If you could let me know what to do I would be most grateful. Site Disappeared For Exact Match Search?
Can anyone help me figure out what is happening to a site I recently set up? The site is http://intervalmanagementgroup.com/ and it completely fell off for an exact match brand name search of "Interval Management Group". It had been climbing to the top spot on page one shortly after launch and has now disappeared from Google while Bing and Yahoo seem to have no problem with it. . . Any insight is much appreciated!

Need a full web design TEAM.
I'm an SEO manager for a company in Los Angeles. You can see our website here: https://opiates.com. I've been at the company for about 3 months, and in that time we've almost had our website re-done twice. It is badly in need of an overhaul in terms of design and navigation, but at the same time we can't afford to lose the organic traffic that we currently have. Does anyone have recommendations for web development firms that can take on a BIG project and work with me to preserve the SE traffic that we currently have? Thanks

Sites we can submit web design news to...
Hey Mozzers - happy 2013 to one and all, I hope everyone had a great festive season! Now we're all back into the swing of things, we're in the process of getting our new website up and running. We're a web and graphic design agency, and I'm putting together checklists to ensure we get new projects some coverage where deserved. There will be a different checklist for the different disciplines - brand design, packaging, web design and so on. For many of these disciplines, there are multiple news sites that we can reach out to when we have relevant stories - Dieline for packaging, for example. But for web design, any searches I do either show up CSS Galleries / portfolios (which I already have on the checklist under another section) or web tutorial sites. I don't seem to be able to find decent, trustworthy sites that exclusively feature web news. I'm sure they exist and it's just a case of 'can't see for looking', but does anyone know of decent sites that carry news stories about new websites going live? Obviously we know not every new site will be newsworthy - and indeed we wouldn't try to submit every new site we have go live for that very reason - but it would be good to have a clutch of high authority, well visited sites to turn to when we do have something of note. Any help is much appreciated! Thanks Mozzers!

Drop In Rankings / Traffic... Can you find any technical issues with my site?
I haven't spammed the engines, if anything I haven't done enough link building. So let me start here: I split my old domain www.STbands.com into two separate domains - www.Suddora.com and www.CustomOnIt.com . The main site now goes to Custom On It and each page directly 301 as it was relevant. I knew there was going to be a little blow back... The first month went fairly well but last week we noticed a dip in organic search traffic and sure enough some of our main keywords are now suffering. I am wondering if this is because we haven't been building enough links to the new domains or if our new eCommerce CMS (magento enterprise) has technical SEO issues that is giving Google trouble. Nothing on GWT looks terribly wrong, should i be searching for something specific? Anything helps at this point, we are in dire need of some direction on what could be wrong. Any suggestions?

How do you get reviews from a local review site to show up in Places?
Does anyone have any experience with getting a local review site to show up when it is turning out tens of thousands of reviews on local companies in one specific industry (no not restaurants) (Insurance agents, etc.)? Is there a submission process for Google? Thanks mozzers
