Classified Sites Ranking on Page 1

How is it that Craigslist, and Backpage get a boost from google and take over 1 or more of the page one results in my niche? Ive also seen people ask a yahoo question, and answer with a link to their website? Are these just temporary boosts?

Not necessarily. Can you provide a link to Google SERP so I can answer this accurately?
Sometime (pretty often) Google will show one page but provide the rankings due to another page.For example, I have a strong "CCTV Cameras" category page and under I have a "[Specific Type of CCTV Camera] " page. The first page is strong and he will provide me with high ranks but it dosen't mean it will be show for it. Instead, due to visitor data or/and social signals, the second page may appear if it's temporarily more popular.
After it gets removed (i.e. sold out) the first page, or other trendier topic related page, will assume the position.
This scenario can be discovered by looking at 100 results (use. advance search) there sometimes you
ll find several results from the same site, side by side - where in basic search youve saw only one single result. This is a symbiotic relationship I`m talking about. The 1st and displayed result is not the "cause" for high rank, it just "riding co-tails" of other strong pages.From what you`ve described, you see some of these too ( " take over 1 or more of the page one results in my niche...") For these, if the 1st page gets removed, another will probably take its place...

So will these eventually lose position since they are just a classified post?

These are pretty "strong" domains we are talking about with enormous link profiles, tons of social signals, a lot of visits etc.. You can probably "beat them" at some niche KW, but this will take some work.
This is somewhat like competing against Wikipedia, which dominates a lot of niche KW and some major KW too...
As to your second question, permanent links will provide permanent value.

What happened to my ranking
Hi trying to rank for "liverpool wedding photographer" as my main keyword. my profile is mainly wedding blogs and photography blog comments, a few "featured weddings" from wedding blogs , directory links and I have also a few guest post blogs. Goy myself all excited in December by getting to 4th position and then followed that up by around 35 links in one week. So expecting my ranking to stabilise or even go up I watched my site slowly sink to a current position of 7th, over January, even as the new links kicked in. a weird thing happened in this period as the following sites where I had left one comment on a blog post ended up giving me links from nearly all the other posts they had written: http://www.richardbernabe.com/blog/2012/12/04/iceland-bound-again/ http://blog.leica-camera.com/2014/12/03/andrew-kaufman-documenting-the-disappearing-street-art-of-wynwood/ http://jnack.com/blog/2015/01/04/when-will-wearable-cameras-be-a-thing/ webmaster tools is indicating I have 374 links from the leica site, 174 links from the richardbernabe site and 77 from the njack one. They are all different blog posts! I have disavowed all three domains. Can anyone explain what has caused this multiplication of links from these particular sites? Are new pages treated similar to new domains with respect to ranking?
Hello...I'm hoping to get some advice or guidance regarding the following. My website has gone from a 30 page site about loans, to a 500 page site covering a much wider range of products such as mortgages and other more specific loan related pages. All the new pages were made live at the same time, and I've been through GWT tools to add pages with in the Google fetch and most have been indexed fine. My question is, how should I expect Google to treat all of these new pages? The site has changed massively and many of the new pages are at pages 3-4 for their key terms. Will Google treat these new pages in the same way it may a new domain, e.g. it could be potenitally a couple of months before the pages start to rank better? I appreciate that the terms are very competitive. Thanks!

Site used to rank first for main keyword - now dropped drastically
The home page for this site (http://bit.ly/4m1eXy) was ranking between #1 and #3 for the term "Minneapolis criminal defense" as of a few months ago. Now the home page has dropped to #23 for this keyword, and the only changes we've made should be enhancing its ability to rank - through on-page optimization, cleaning up site errors, and ensuring good, quality content. The thing is, the sites who rank ahead of our site have lower domain authority and page authority, and their content, quite frankly, just isn't that great. Some of them are definitely doing SEO but they aren't necessarily targeting "Minneapolis criminal defense" like we are for the search term. Before our company started doing SEO for this website, they hired a company that generated a large number of backlinks that Google would probably now see as spammy. The previous company also used to direct traffic towards the home page for the keyword "Minneapolis DWI laywer" too - and we have since stopped doing that. So I'm wondering with all of Google's algorithmic updates if this is the reason we're seeing a drop for this term, and if Google's confused. We're pretty confused, too, though, since the sites ranking ahead of us don't seem to be doing squeaky clean SEO by any means. Advice for us? We're stumped. Would anyone consider Google's disavow tool for the bad links?

What's a reasonable time to start ranking for a niche site?
I launched a niche site to go through the whole process, for fun and profit. Started with keyword research (3-6 word long tail keywords), have done first 3 posts and done minimal amount of link building. Have gotten about a dozen visitors in the first 5 weeks and ranking on page 2. Is this ok or should I be more aggressive with link building (assuming my keyword research is done ok)?

Value of a Wikipedia page
Is there any value in creating a Wikipedia page for a company then placing a link from a Wikipedia article that is focused on a service or type of product that the company offers? I was recently searching for topics related to a companies services on Wikipedia and found some of our competitors had links within the article to their very own Wikipedia pages. Companies Wikipedia page contained a link to the companies website.
