Discrepancy in OSE data
-
When I look up a domain in OSE, it shows that there are 3K+ links from 349 domains. However, when I download the CSV, I only see around 1,500 links.
Why the discrepancy?
-
Unfortunately, there isn't currently a way to know which domains have more than 25 links to your site. I would recommend that you submit a request to add this capability to OSE in our feture request forum. Here's the feature request forum we use to collect ideas:

Is there a way to know which domains have links filtered out?
-
Hi There,
Sorry for the confusion.
Our system can only download up to 25 links from each linking root domain (http://screencast.com/t/91C16Av7), so if one site is (or just a few sites are) responsible for the majority of the links, it will limit the number of actual links we can export. For example, www.seomoz.org shows about 1000 internal links and our system can only export up to 25 links from any linking root domain so there are around 975 internal links that we cannot export for that page. This limitation is true for the advanced reports, as well.
I hope this clears things up. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

So if it says 3K+ total links, I should be able to download that many?
-
Almost certainly the filters you have applied. The download should tell you exactly what filters are in use.

GOOGLE ANALYTIC SKEWED DATA BECAUSE OF GHOST REFERRAL SPAM ND CRAWL BOTS
Hi Guys, We are having some major problems with our Google Analytics and MOz account. Due to the large number of ghost/referral spam and crawler bots we have added some heavy filtering to GA. This seems to be working protecting the data from all these problems but also filtering out much needed data that is not coming through. In example, we used to get a hundred visitors a day at the least and now we are down to under ten. ANYBODY PLEASE HELP. HAVE READ THROUGH MANY ARTICLES WITH NO FIND TO PERMANENT SOLID SOLUTION (even willing to go with paid service instead of GA) Thank You so Much, S.M.

What search engines does SEOMoz pull the SERP data from on the keyword analysis report?
I did a Google search and I noticed that some of the rankings that pulled up did not match the SEOmoz top 1-10 competitors. I was sure not to include personal results. I was completely signed out of my Google account. Another one of the SEO tools showed the same result as when I did the Google search, completely different from SEOmoz's report. I am curious to know where the data comes from, so I can accurately compare/ contrast the varying results.

Apparent discrepancy on overseas Google results in Rankings
Probably a very noob question this ... I'm based in the UK and have just set up a campaign which includes Google US. There seems to be a discrepancy between some of the rankings found by SEOMOZ and what I see when I simulate the actual search using Adwords > Ad Preview. For example, a particular term shows "not in the top 50" for Google US on the rankings page of my campaign in SEOMOZ. But my US colleagues say that when they run the search they see us on page 1. And when I simulate the search via Adwords Preview, I also see our site ranking well on page 1. I'd like to understand why the discrepancy 🙂 Thanks for any advice. Gord

How often does SEOMoz refresh their link analysis data?
I know that my link profile has changed within the last month, yet both SEOMoz campaign link analysis and Open Site Explorer have shown the exact same number of links for more than a month. Majestic SEO fluctuates as I would expect, but Moz data is unchanged.

OSE Domains & Subdomains
Is there a compelling reason that OSE treats subdomains as part of a parent domain, rather than as a separate site? Or is this just a technical limitation? I ask because it's my understanding that Google treats subdomains more like separate domains than like parts of the parent domain. OSE treating them more like folders creates some frustrating situations when researching niches that are heavily filled with blospot and wordpress.com blogs. First of all, the domain authority in these situations is not at all indicative of the strength of the site. It also makes it hard to evaluate linking root domains at a glance, since all blogspot blogs count as one domain. So to see all blogspot sites linking you have to go to the full link list -- where each site may be listed hundreds of times -- and you can't group them because they're all considered the same domain. To be sure you when researching these niches you can just throw out domain authority as a metric, and export every report to excel where you can sort things in a way to make it easier to separate sites. But if there isn't a compelling SEO reason to have OSE function this way, I'd love to see those subdomains treated as separate sites so I can have access to all the easy to use SEOmoz metrics and layouts without the extra work. And of course if there is a compelling SEO reason for subdomains to be treated as domains, I'd love to be educated! : )

OSE Advanced Reports best practices
I'm curious how people use the OpenSiteExplorer Advanced Reports tab. It seems very powerful. What do you use it for? In particular, I see that it has choices for 'same C block' and 'different C block'. Those seem useful to find C blocks that my competitors have links from that I do not, but I'm not totally clear on how to construct the query. Any help or best practices would be appreciated. Thanks!

Total number of links in OSE not clear to me.
I have compared 3 sites in open site explorer. The total # of links in the subdomain metrics report for one of the urls is 46,787. Where is that number coming from? There's 125 total external followed links and 132 total external links. I cannot see the number for internal links, but I'm sure it isn't 40000+. So 46,787 is the result of the addition of what? Thanks a lot for your help, and sorry for this newbie question 🙂
