SEO and Affiliate Links
-
Hello,
We run a travel related website and we started to run our own affilate newtwork to promote the sales of our products.
At the moment the affilate links pont to a spacific affilate url in order to tack conversions :
I'm wondering how is the best way to run a private affilate programm considering SEO:
Is there a way yo benefit from those links ?
What are the best strategies to do this?
If yes, Is there any benefit from redirecting 301 those links to the original page (the one accesible to google and the one we want to rank for) or is it better to use a king of canonical method.
Thanks a lot for sharing you experiences , giving your opinion and indicate resources.
Best Regards
Daria

Thanks for all your good Suggestions. I will do more research now that I have little bit more information on the subject and be back soon.
I hope you will still be around.

You can track any type of link you like. Google is good at detecting affiliate links built in common formats or run through big networks. However there are plenty of links around that are part of an affiliate program and totally undetectable by algorithmic means.
One example: I've previously written scripts to track referred sales from the referring domain. No tracking URL was used.
If I was building an affiliate program with the SEO benefit of the links in mind I'd probably use (or at least offer) a method like that. There is also another trick that I've seen used in the travel sector quite heavily using malformed URLs which I think it slightly more theoretically traceable, but seems to work just fine.
Even simpler I would suggest that most forms that don't go through a known network and don't use an obvious form like &aff_id=xxx or &affiliate=xxx will probably count.
I'd imagine that doing such is pretty much a textbook example of a paid link. You'd need to consider that and be sure you were happy with such risk. Either way I would strongly disagree with the other comments that affiliate links don't count. I'd also question the suggestion that affiliates will always nofollow as well.
More pressing I would consider whether you are possibly causing a duplicate content issue with your URL structure.
If abcweb.com/affiliate1/nameqaz and abcweb.com/affiliate2/nameqaz both point to the same page and there is no 301 or canonical in place then you could end up with multiple versions of the same page indexed. I'd opt for a 301 if you are stuck with that structure which would also help direct the link equity if that is your concern.
Better still I'd pass one (or more) get vars and have these ignored through webmaster tools. If you were using abcweb.com/nameqaz?rand=111 & abcweb.com/nameqaz?rand=222 and had ?rand ignored in webmaster tools that would solve a couple of issues.
I'm not endorsing everything above as a great tactic for every project. However it is all correct.

As Gamer07 said, Google is pretty good at detecting these, so many the affiliate links themselves should not give much SEO benefit. However incorrect implementation could lead to issues with duplicate content.
If you are going to send your affiliate links through a different directory than the main page - such as /affiliate/ then you should make sure that you block this directory with robots.txt - as an extra precaution I would add canonical URLs to the page since you cannot guarantee all incoming links will be no-followed.
Personally, I think the best method would be to use the one main page that you direct both visitors and affiliates to and then add a hashtag (#) to the URL for affiliates and include their affiliate ID after that.
- Edited portion of last paragraph (left out a word) and corrected spelling error

As far as I know, Google is pretty good at detecting affiliate links and most affiliate marketers add "nofollow" to those links anyway. So you won't receive any link juice with those affiliate links.
I see some of the affiliate programs prefer to use seperate domains for affiliate links and then some others use their own domain name.

My affiliate links are being crawled by Google. Is this a bad thing? Also, should I add rel: nofollow to affiliate links?
Hi All, I have an issue on Google Search Console. It seems all my affiliate links are being crawled. Is this a bad thing? The reason I found out is that all but one link was flagged with a warming. It goes on to say that it was blocked by robots.txt. The strange thing is that I've not set any links to be blocked in robots.txt. Also, should affiliate links be nofollow? I'm asking because I was recently sent this article by Yoast on how to properly cloak my affiliate links without using a plugin. https://yoast.com/cloak-affiliate-links/ In the method, they apply the nofollow and noindex rules to the links. I'm just a little confused on how to go about affiliate links the SEO friendly way.

What's the best way to go about making Duplicate Content Pages on my domain for affiliates?
Hello, I would like to make a bunch of duplicate pages of my site's Home Page, that way affiliates of mine can have a page of their own with links specialized to themselves littered throughout the page. What's the best practice going about this without jeopardizing domain authority from tons of duplicate content signals firing off?

Choosing an Affiliate Software & Link SEO-Value
Hello everyone. I'm looking for recommendations for affiliate software. I'm also curious if there is any truth in the "SEO-value" that some softwares are touting as a benefit. Choosing a Software: This Moz Blog Article says to build it yourself. However, I'm inclined to use an out-of-the-box software for advanced features such as real-time analytics for the affiliate, w-9/1099 processing, etc. MozPerks promotes hasoffers.com which seems overly pricey ($230/month with perk discount) and OMNISTAR who just left me on hold for 10 minutes (and still no anwer from their sales department). So I'm still looking. Any recommendations? SEO-value of Links from Affiliates: Here's an example of what OMNISTAR claims about the SEO value of the way they structure the links from affiliate sites to my site. I hear a variation on this pitch from each software and none of them seem to agree. Does Google want me to clearly tag promotional vs. editorial links? Is there SEO-value in promotional links on affiliate sites or is that a load of bologna? Thanks a bunch!

Tweeting affiliate links...?
I work in the music business & am published music producer. I'm an authority in my niche. Yada yada. I have a website that sells products to other music producers. I recently set up an affiliate partnership with someone who is also in the music business but on the management side. She is not an authority to my customers as far as music making goes. But she does have a huge following of people who are EXACTLY who I am targeting. She has been tweeting my affiliate links. The traffic has been great, but the purchase response has not been. I've had much better responses from reviewers and other music producers who have tweeted my links. I was just wondering if anyone had any tips for the most effective ways of tweeting affiliate links? Thanks!

Links exchange - Penguin update potential ??
Hi Everyone, If site A and site B exchange links in the past, it used to be kind of voided. So it is a practicve that we had pretty uch put on the side. But with the new penguin update, do you guys think that if 2 web sites are contacting each other to share a link in the interest of the user that it might be a new best practice to implement? Example, Car site contact car suspension site to exchange a link on relevant content such as blog articles or specific content on a page. What are your thoughts about that ? I am curious to know if anyone is wondering abouot that... Thanks, Alex

How many affiliate links is considered too many?
Hi, Let's say you have great reviews for 50 products and some of these products do have affiliate links on review pages. And then you have user scores and you come up with a top 20 product list sorted by user scores. Now if you have the list of top 20 products on one page and all these products have an affiliate link (with nofollow relation and a 301 redirect) on the same page with only a couple of images and a summary of the review linked to the review pages, would this still be considered as what Google calls a "bridge page"? Would it be better to still generate the top 20 list but rather link to review pages only? (to avoid too many affiliate links on one single page).

Hiding Affiliate Links
Hello, Currently I'm developing a website that will contain a lot of affiliate links (5000). This is because I'm going to compare the prices of a lot of products. The visitor can go to all websites (my advertisers) that sell these products via affiliate links. My question is how to hide these affiliate links. I've read lots of solutions, like: cloaking, rel=nofollow, using JavaScript, 301 redirects. I would like to know what the best solution is to deal with these affiliate links for SEO. Regards, Martijn
