What do you do if you have been hit by recent Google updates but cannot remove the links?

We have a potential new client who did their own SEO about 6-7 years ago.They ranked really well for years then obviously recently got hit.
Some of the links they have are shocking, directories, articles sites etc. They did not use links farms but the links do not look great at all. The problem is they do not have log ins to remove these links manually themselves. Asking for a reconsideration with Google will not get us anywhere due to more recent link building issues we are trying to resolve.
They have sent removal requests at least 10 times to these sites but no response. Has anyone overcome these types of issues previously and can give any tips?
This would be a good client for us so keen to see what I can do to get them on-board.

like the 404 idea I will try that one.
Not done any work yet trying to get them on as a client. But I want to be sure we can 100% help, no point taking the project if its not going to improve much for them.
Any one else got any experience with this please chip in. Surely there must be loads of people who cannot get links removed, they can't all lose there online business due to this.

I haven't had much experience with this problem, but here are some things I would try.
- First, keep track and document all attempts to remove links. Website, contact dates, emails, etc.
- Offer to pay each webmaster $20 to remove the link. Money talks and will often get you a response.
- Consider 404ing the pages that the bad sites link to. Move your content to a new page. Do not 301 it. Of course, you will lose any legitimate links you have earned. Perhaps you can contact those sites to update to your new URL.
- Disavow links in Bing Webmaster Tools
- If you've put in a lot of work on #1 above, and had some success with #2 above, submit a reconsideration request with Google.

What is the best way to remove a link that redirects to a spammy site?
I've got a new client and I'm trying to clean up their backlinks. There are several links that all redirect to this spam site http://www.expert-lender.com. All of the websites appear to be real, i.e. http://www.sammorganhomes.com/ but the actual links i.e http://www.sammorganhomes.com/wp-fav/backup/supplement/semitruckleasing.html are in a sub-directory and redirect to the spam site. I don't know if these links were from the previous SEO company or if they paid someone to create these or if these sites have been hacked. Should I ask sites that link to me to update links that redirect?
I have found some links to my site that go through a single 301 redirect to get to my site. Should I contact these websites to ask them to update the link, or is that not worth the time?

Old Links Remove or not to remove?
Hey everyone, So i have a site which I had previous seo work on over the years, none of which was successful for me. Now that I have taken over the seo work, I am analyzing my old links I have a certain amount of links from what I would see are "crappy" seo sites and I wondered if I need to try and remove them. When do my links show up?
For the last two weeks I have been working on linkbuilding. I have downloaded competitors link reports and started contacting or submitting links. In the last two weeks I have gotten about 50-60 or so. In the newest report it shows I went up four c-blocks. Why is that? It is kind of discouraging.

Do links from the second page of an article pass link juice?
I have been writing for some sites with a high overall page rank and the articles are being viewed as quality by search engines as well. However, they usually put a link to my site at the very end of the article and then break the article down into two pages to increase ad revenue. It seems that I'm not getting much credit for that link even if the page has a high SEOmoz/PR score. I want to know if I am getting the benefit from these links. If not, how do I make sure I get the most bang, even if my link is on a second page of the article? 700,000+ Google Webmaster Messages Sent - unnatural linking Profile. What to do?
Google has confirmed they have sent out of over 700,000 messages through its google webmaster interface in February. Thats more than what they sent in all of 2011. Where does this leave us? What have we done wrong? What works going forward? Im sure many business's will be left in a very bad position over this update, people will lose their jobs. I always considered myself to be very careful with my link building as I am totally reliant on search for my business. I think something so big requires a better explanation from google. Has SEOmoz any more info on such a big update? This really needs input from the big SEO heads.
