Old Links Remove or not to remove?
-
Hey everyone,
So i have a site which I had previous seo work on over the years, none of which was successful for me. Now that I have taken over the seo work, I am analyzing my old links I have a certain amount of links from what I would see are "crappy" seo sites and I wondered if I need to try and remove them. Here are a few examples.

How do I check if google has penalized me for these links and should I start removing them?
ThanksMichelle

Thanks Andy, feel a lot better now

Thanks Highland,
I am pretty sure non of my links are from link farms and so by the sounds of things I should be ok with leaving what has already been done.

Google won't tell you if links are hurting you. But you generally need a large group of spammy links to really hurt you. I would only remove links after doing a top-down analysis of your backlinks. Use Open Site Explorer and ahrefs.com together and look at your profile. One major thing to look for is common anchor text. You need to ask yourself if people would naturally link to you using anything other than your company name.
Blog spam - I wouldn't remove these because it might still be providing some benefit. It contains content so it's not obvious there's a problem. At worst the site will be devalued.
Link farms - These are the most common low quality link and the ones you should pay attention to. Link farms are typically loaded with links and little or no real content. If you can remove them, do it. If not, I wouldn't disavow them since they are already likely devalued.
Paid links - Make sure these are nofollow or they could hurt. I've found "mommy blogs" and other similar efforts don't always do that.

unless you get a warning from google don't be too hasty about trying to remove them. they may hold little value but they probably aren't doing any harm.

Relaunching a site that has had thousands of posts linking to the same 20 articles. How to properly setup internal linking?
I'm in the process of relaunching a music news site (www.prefixmag.com) that once did quite well in search (over a million monthly search visits in its prime). The site got crushed by Panda, etc. and we stopped updating it. I'm starting to do more research but one thing that I noticed was we have modules in the right rail (desktop) that are found on all of our article pages that point to the same posts. (Edit: Added attachment. The links in the right rail under Editor Picks, Features, News, Media, etc. are found on every page of the site). In other words, we have thousands of posts that all link to the same 20 or so articles. Should we not do this if we're not trying to emphasize these posts in Google? Assuming this is the case, what is the proper way to do internal linking? Do we simply setup a sitemap and link to it? I'm hoping to have the thousands of articles we've published over the years have a chance to rank in search again. Also, we have a number of posts that are thin in content should those pages not be submitted in the sitemap? Thanks in advance! 2KmX0

How many links per week/month should a link building campaign acquire?
I am running a linkbuilding campaign for my company. I am mostly focusing on guest blogging opportunities and responding to emails from HARO. How many links would I have to acquire each week or month to be considered doing a good job over a 6 month or a year time period? Thank you,

Link building strategy - my weak link!
Please help me understand link building. I've read the articles on Moz, but they seem vague to me. Specific questions: 1. How do I get my webpage on good quality sites? 2. Guest blogging? Good or not? 3. What about when people pick up one of our blog stories and publish it on their site with a link back? Is that bad now because it is duplicate content??? 4. Forum posts with a link in the signature? Good or not? 5. Directories - I get it that these are no longer good... are they severely negative? Should I take them down. 6. PR - Looks like this is bad... right??? 7. Youtube - any value? 8. Pinterst, LinkedIn, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram? Any value to backlinks here? 9. What about sites like redit? 10. Anything else I should consider?

Logistics of getting links removed
I recently got an unnatural links penalty notice from Google. Well, at least it's the type where they say they're only penalizing the links, and not the site. I've noticed lots of links from low-quality sites in my Webmaster Tools, and have been wondering why my site hasn't been ranking better since it abruptly dropped off around October 22, 2012 (I know, that's a very long time ago – I've been neglecting the site for other parts of my business). I'm hoping that if I make an earnest attempt to get these links removed, disavow the others, and submit a reconsideration request, my rankings may improve. So my question is this: How, logistically, do you go about getting all of these links removed? I mean, technically I get it: go through all of the links, try to contact all of those webmasters, keep records of all correspondence, and share that with Google. But how? Are there special tools and services for this? Are there contractors you recommend? I have other things I'd rather worry about in my business than undoing these unauthorized links.

Bearshare links?
I am doing competitor link research and so far 4 of the 4 have had links from search.bearshare.net What kind of site is this? I am sure it isn't valuable but I can't figure out how it is getting crawled.

Should you proactively remove spammy links?
Occasionally I notice spammy sites linking to us. Should I proactively try to request that they take down the links to avoid getting penalized? Or should I just wait for Google to provide a disavow link tool.

Link Building
I've been hearing about going after niche directories, and my question is most of them have a ton of links on any given page. Is it even worth taking the time to approach these sites knowing they won't pass a lot of link juice?
