How Is It Possible That I Rank O Above Large Competitors?

Ive noticed that on some terms I am ranking above my competitors who are much larger, older, and have many more links. How is this possible?

acutally what I was using is the SEO moz plug in to show a non pers. search. Although I am not #1 I found it odd that I was ranking above a HUGE website.

Yes...I often use Pagewash.com to make sure I'm not seeing personalized results as well. It's not always the best for locational queries but good for most SERP checks.

Another similar thing to do is open up a private browsing / incognito browser window and try the search.

Are you absolutely sure you're not seeing personalized results? Log out of Google and do the same search. Then type &pws=0 at the end of the end of the url and hit enter. Are you still number one?

Yes, it syre can be the optimized copy, internal links, theme of your site. So if your site is only about Widgets, you have 100 different kinds of Widgets and that's all you sell. In that case, all your internal links, categories are focused around Widgets. That gives you an edge if your other factors are strong, you could be ranking better then your competition, the stronger competition.
Also, the volume of links do not matter. In this case, you might have 10 Widget related links from other Widget sites, which the bigger competition does not have, making you a better suited site ranking for that term. This logic might be totally different for another term.

It does, but they have a TON of links, Stronger authority than me, could it be the copy?

For a lot of niche products / categories, it can be better. The rankings are dependent on multiple factors and although a site like wikipedia could be ranking for everything towards the top...similarly like amazon or pinterest or ebay and so on. The stronger authority domains do have that advantage, like a brand would. But then a niche product/category might have much better focused copy, a lot of internal links to this page from within the website, making this a stronger page.

Just a thought. With the way pagerank works and passing link juice evenly across all your links. Would it make sense to structure your site so that each page passes your all your link juice from lets say your homepage to another page. Then that page would contain all the link juice from the homepage. Then do the same thing with the next pages. For instance Homepage - linkjuice 10 link1 - follow link2 rel=nofollow link3 rel=nofollow link4 rel=nofollow link5 rel=nofollow Link1 - linkjuice 10 link1 rel=nofollow link2 - follow link3 rel=nofollow link4 rel=nofollow link5 rel=nofollow Link2 - linkjuice 10 link1 rel=nofollow link2 rel-nofollow link3 - follow link4 rel=nofollow link5 rel=nofollow Link3 - linkjuice 10 link1 rel=nofollow link2 rel-nofollow link3 rel=nofollow link4 - follow link5 rel=nofollow Link4 - linkjuice 10 link1 rel=nofollow link2 rel-nofollow link3 rel=nofollow link4 rel=nofollow link5 - follow and so on. Got destroyed by Penguin because of questionable links. I had most of the links removed and my sites have been restored for the most part - though lower than they previously ranking for keywords. What is the best SEO strategy to move up in rank? Link Building strategy? Is there a penalty for domains that have keywords in them?

Should I Just Copy A Competitor's Backlinks?
Forgive the newbie question, but now that I have found SeoMoz and OpenSiteExplorer, should I just piggy back on my competitors backlinks? What would be the downside? By way of explanation, I've never had the need to explore SEO before. Our site, Widgets.com has always ranked highly for all Widgets keywords because we have the keyword in our domain and our site has been around since 1998. But out of the blue this summer, a site, let's call them WidgetsCircus.com suddenly began outranking us on widgets keywords, and pretty much every keyword we can imagine in our little widget universe. Now that I have run OpenSiteExplorer, I can see how they've done it. They've pretty much spent the last year commenting on blog posts all over the place, editing wiki pages, etc., and built thousands of links for all these widget keywords. So, I'm wondering: why shouldn't I just go down the list of links and do exactly what they've done? Where they commented on a blog, why don't I just comment right along side them. Obviously, this has worked for them! Wouldn't it work for us too? Or is that too simple?

What percentage of an old post can I change without lose rank?
A few months ago I updated some old posts of my site (Wordpress), to improve old content, with new pictures (better quality), better content, new info about product, and links to our review of this product (newer posts). Most part of the content is this old posts were new, so I "deleted" the old text but replaced the new one with another of better quality. I suppose it will help new post to improve rank, but I los thousands of daily visits, because old posts ranks worse since the change. What do you think? What happened here? Maybe I shouldn't update the whole text, only add a link to new content? Thank you!

Will removing old (3 years+), low quality inbound links potentially improve my rankings?
I have a client site with thousands of old very low quality links purchased from directories etc over several years - I am certain these are doing nothing for the current rankings and I advised them to stop buying these links 18 months ago when I first started working with them, but do you think pro-actively getting old poor quality backlinks removed will potentially improve the site's rankings?
