Should I use rel=canonical in this case
-
Hi SEO pros,
I am working on a website competing on the keyword "USA maps" and would appreciate your advice and comments on the issue below.
The site has one major page for USA maps and like 5-6 smaller pages under different categories, e.g. US travel maps (under Travel Maps category), US travel guides (under Travel Guides), US atlases (under Atlases), etc.
The smaller pages do not rank in search results and are not optimized well for any keyword.
Here are my questions:
#1. Do you think that if I add rel=canonical to the main USA maps page from all small pages that will help get higher ranking of the main page?
#2 Or should I better try to optimize these small pages for the keywords they target (e.g. "US travel maps") and try to send link juice to the main page from text link within the content?
Thank you,
-
Thanks Davinia and Peter,
That's what I intend to do.
I was considering adding rel=canonical, but then, as I wrote the question here, it occurred to me there's a better solution. Thanks for making the choice easier.

GIven that you're talking about 5-6 pages, I'd tend to agree with Davinia. It sounds like these pages have a shot at having unique value, and you could probably beef them up with solid content relatively easily. If you were spinning out 100s or 1000s of thin, geo-targeted pages, that would be different (and that can cause Panda problems), but for half a dozen pages, the canonical would have very little impact here. If they're valuable to users, let them work for you and make them valuable to search.

Provided the content on your lower level pages is unique by going for option 2 you can widen your reach on search engine result pages; leading to more traffic for your website. Rel=canonical will make lower level pages pretty much redundant for gaining ranking, so if the content is valuable (to a user and search engine) wouldn't you want to optimize that opportunity? I vote option 2

Using Canonical & INDEX, FOLLOW meta tag
I am sort of new to this, and working with an overseas development team on an eCommerce site. I am curious if the Canonical tag will supersede the tag, or if it is best to remove this tag entirely for duplicate product pages?

Authorship - How bad is it to use a fictional character instead of the actual author ??
Hi I know authorship is all about the author hence should be a real person (the author) but in the case of children's books etc etc is it really not ok to develop authorship around the character rather the actual author ? For example kids searching google will recognise the character but not the author Even if G doesnt like it how bad is it to ignore them and proceed with the character ? All Best Dan

Title Attribute Length + Use
Hi, Is there an optimum character limit for attribute titles like there is for meta titles? On my ecommerce site I am adding about 280 characters product category page headers to succinctly describe what the page is such as in the example below; MENS BRIEFS + TANGAS We stock a range of mens briefs from leading designer brands that offer popular cuts and fabrics such as mens cotton briefs. You will also discover styles that are a little more risqué for those looking for something more daring in sexy mens briefs and tangas. I have added the following [title attribute] to this header text (MENS BRIEFS + TANGAS)so it displays the following title attribute text when you hover over it. My intention behind this is so that it enables me to provide visitors with access (via assistive reading software or hovering their cursor over the header text) to a bit more information, which they my find useful [title attribute text] - Mens briefs and tangas. These are possibly the most common and long established style of mens underwear, yet they still come in a variety of cuts and styles. The common feature amongst all men’s briefs is that they have a full rear panel that partly or entirely covers the bottom. They will have cut away legs, a pouch at the front and are supported with an elasticated waistband. Briefs and tangas can vary in the amount coverage in the side panels around the hips and top of the legs and the rear. The more revealing and skimpier tanga style usually consists of only a pouch at the front that is supported with an elasticated waistband and a minimalist rear, with no side panels that exposes the hips.[title attribute text] Is this too much? Can search engines penalise me for it? Am I using/misusing title attributes? Thanks

Rel=Publisher
Hi Since rel=publisher code should be added to the head tags of a website surely this means that would then show up on every main page of a site but i'm looking at a few sites using the rich snippet testing tool and its only showing for home page - how come ? Cheers Dan

How to best use our blog posts for SEO?
My company recently created a WordPress hosted blog.  It is hosted completely separate from our company site.  The primary domain for the blog is blog.mydomainname.com, but we immediately created a folder within our company website for www.mydomainname.com/blog that has a reverse proxy to the blog itself. I'm curious though if we should consider taking the content from the blog posts and re-creating that within our company website as well?  The blog posts are very good SEO rich content, and we always struggle to find new content to put on our company website as it is already. Would like to get some folks thoughts on this. Thanks!

Rel Canonical
I will  be quick and to the point.  I am clearly a novice. I received a notice on my seomoz  account that I had 12 pages with a Rel Canonical issue.  It seems serious.  Can this be a quick fix?  Any thoughts?  Below is the site address. petbarnpdx.com Thanks in advance for any input on this!    Dave
