Ideas for a strange surge in direct traffic
-
Being the type of person that can't stop checking my Google Analytics, I noticed this morning that between the hours of 12 and 2 central time last night I recieved a strange surge of direct traffic. My site typically gets around 40 direct visits per day (most of them coming during peak hours around the time people are getting off of work). I received 150 direct visits during this random time in the middle of the night. My bounce rate soared as almost every visit was a bounce. The visitors locations are spread out as if it is natural human traffic. Every single one of the visitors is using a chrome browser. Has anyone else run into something like this? All I can think of is that someone might have an addon or toolbar for chrome that linked to my site for a while in a way that caused unsuspecting visitors to end up on my page. For now I'm keeping my fingers crossed and hoping the traffic doesn't return, as it could be bad news for my Adsense.
*Edit: Also of particular interest, each direct visit went to an internal page on my site and no two of the 150 visits went to the same internal page.
I also added an image showing a normal complete day's direct traffic and my direct traffic for today so far (The bulk of the surge came yesterday but the shot from today illustrates the surge better because it is missing my naturally daily direct traffic that comes in the afternoon)

Beer nights are Wednesday, so he wasn't out drinking last night. I don't think that would have been Roger in any case.

Thanks Keri, you got me in the right direction. I think I got to hung up on nice distribution of locations. On looking further each of the direct hits was coming from amazonaws.com (must be a bot of some sort). Has anyone seen Roger? Was he out drinking again last night?

I had a similar situation once, and determined that it was not 100+ visitors each visiting one internal page by a direct visit, but one visitor going to 100+ pages and something with the browser configuration was not passing the referral information to Google Analytics. I happened to have a secondary analytics program on the site that showed it was all from one computer. Really threw off my stats though.
You might look and see if all of those have the same version of flash/javascript/os/screen resolution. If there's a bunch of "identical" browsers, it might actually be one computer.

- Check if stumble upon sends refferal traffic, or direct traffic.
- @mattcutts and ask him if it will hurt, be transparent and upfront

It is really bizarre to me that I couldn't find two direct visits to the same page from the surge. While it is not uncommon to receive some direct traffic to internal pages, the direct visits are typically to just a few of my more popular pages. I haven't myself purchased any traffic as this particular site is purely informational and driven by Adsense clicks. I am waiting for the email that says "Hey did you see your traffic surge last night, pay x amount and we will keep it coming."

I don't think it was a social media related post due to the fact that all traffic is showing a Chrome browser. The natural spread of visitor locations has me ruling out a bot and such. It's more of a curiosity thing at this point (as long as it does not return).
Yes it is not that massive since it stopped, but if continued, it would consist of the majority of my site's traffic. I'm under the impression that if you get huge amounts of unnatural traffic that are constantly bouncing off your site, it is a red flag for Adsense publishers but I may be wrong on this.
Again it's more me being curious than anything. I don't mind being unproductive if I learn something along the way.

Maybe someone posted a link into IRC or shared it on twitter / facebook etc... Could of been a Bot or someone could of scanned your site for vulns... there could be 1000s of reasons why this happend.
Jumping from about 40 to around 150 is not exactly massive... And it's not bad new for your Adsense?? Unless bas news for you is possibly making more money?!
I would stop obsessing over Analytics stats and work on more productive things, like getting more traffic

Only thing I can think of is traffic being purchase.
Because you said no 2 of the 150 visits are on the same page, this rules out things like social media and any type of referrals.
Are you saying these are all direct traffic?
Its really REALLY odd that they are direct traffic to an internal page, and most likely is purchased traffic.

Help needed - traffic reduced by half for no apparent reason - not sure what to do
My client site, https://www.helpinhearing.co.uk/ - has regularly been showing traffic of between 1000 & 1500 sessions per month. I've just looked at their Analytics for September and the sessions have dropped to just over 600! And not only was there a period of around 11 days from September 19th onwards when there was either zero traffic or 1 or 2 visits, but also from October 4th to today (8th Oct) also no visits at all. This has never happened and we've managed this website for several years now. I cannot fathom out why this may be the case. We haven't changed anything on the site from a technical point of view, just added content and usual blog etc pages. Search Console lists 147 pages as 404 errors but there are no urgent messages or alerts/warnings. I really don't know how to proceed and try and find out what is going on with the site. Can anyone offer suggestions?

How to filter out traffic from subdomain using regex?
Hi There, We have a test server that lives on a subdomain which we'd like to filter out in Google Analytics. We're using the hostname filter but are having trouble understanding the regex needed, we're using this as the filter pattern: .domain.com. Will that work? The profile is new so we can't test the pattern. Any pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated. Cheers Ben

Should Google Trends Match Organic Traffic to My Site?
When looking at Google Trends and my Organic Traffic (using GA) as percentages of their total yearly values I have a correlation of .47. This correlation doesn't seem right when you consider that Google Trends (which is showing relative search traffic data) should match up pretty strongly to your Organic Traffic. Any thoughts on what might be going on? Why isn't Google Trends correlating with Organic Traffic? Shouldn't they be pulling from the same data set? Thanks, Jacob

.com site referral traffic to ccTLDs
We have 7 international domains set up along with our main .com site. All of the ccTLds are showing their main referral traffic as coming from the .com site in GA, and most of those being from mobile. Each site is set up correctly with geo-targeting and hreflang tags. Has anyone experienced this before?

Referral Traffic from Google
Hello, I have a question about my company's new website. I've worked in SEO and studied Google Analytics results for a few years now but have never really come across something like this. I started in this position in January of this year and when I started breaking down the traffic sources in Google Analytics, I noticed most of the traffic was coming from Google.com as a referral source. I had never seen Google.com as a referral source before so I looked into options for what it could be. It was not a paid ad and our organic traffic was coming through in Analytics, Before I could get any further, our new website was launched (we switched CRM's to WordPress) and the referral traffic from google went from 2,966 in January of 2015 to 22 in February 2015. for more comparison, in February of 2014, the referral traffic from Google was 2,496. I expected a drop when we switched CRM's but we correctly re-directed all pages and created a new sitemap and our organic traffic is up since the switch (not enough to cover drop in referral). I thought at first this had to do with our Google sellers account being de-activated when we made the switch, but I quickly fixed this over a month ago and no change. I'm wondering if anyone has ever seen Google.com come through as a referral source in Google Analytics and if they we're able to figure out what it actually was. This would be a great help! Thank you, Alex

Strange Behaviour - Varying rankings across browsers and devices
Hello, I noticed something quite strange over the last week with one of my keywords. I'll explain the lead up to this so it makes more sense. I started SEO work for a client about 3 months ago. One of the keywords I'm trying to increase their ranking for is "auto body calgary". I made a specific landing page for this keyword so it could be better targeted. After I made this landing page I saw their root domain (not the landing page) increase about 10 rankings to number 9 in 2 months. It hung at number 9 for about a month, and then the last month it has decreased to rank 15. For interest sake I searched "auto body calgary" on multiple computers and browsers. On one of the computers I used Safari and my landing page showed up in the number 2 position. On my mobile phone and personal laptop I used Safari and it showed to root domain ranked at 15. I used Google to search every time and wasn't logged in to my Google account on either of the searches. The only thing I've done in the last month is updated some of their directory submissions so they are more consistent. Out of this I have two questions: Why would different browsers show considerably different rankings and pages for a keyword? Since my landing page is more targeted to "auto body calgary" is Google trying to show that page instead of the root domain? (my root domain has considerably more authority than this landing page) Thanks to anyone who can offer insight!

Site Crash Effect On Traffic
All, I manage a site that unfortunately crashed due to a server issue in late October for about 3 hours. Prior to the crash, traffic was the best it had ever been in the 3+ year history of the site. As you might expect, since the crash traffic has gone gradually down and is now about 15% off pre-crash numbers. I understand that when a site crashes, it disrupts the crawling process and can disrupt traffic (in my case rich snippets were thrown off for days) but would love to hear experiences any of you have had in similar situations. How much did traffic drop after a crash? When did it recover? Other thoughts? Thanks, John

Why do I get lots of traffic from a bizarre keyword?
Bit of an odd one but I've been getting a large and steady stream of traffic over the last few months from a very random keyword that according to addwords figures shows "on data". Its our second biggest referring term only beaten by our brand name. We get more traffic from this term than keywords we have invested a lot of time in that show thousands of traffic volume in addwords. When looking at behavioral data its gets odder, a bounce rate of 98.11% time on site 2 seconds and page visits 1.02. So this traffic isn't real traffic and it's not real people. So my questions are, what is it? why do we get this random traffic, has anyone els noticed things like this and is it a problem? I presume it must be something to do with some sort of spam but apart from that i'm stumped. It's just one of those things that has been bugging me so I would appreciate any help. Kind Regards Paul
