Hit hard by EMD update, used to be #1 now not in top 50, what can I do?
-
We have what I think is a pretty good site, unique articles a few widgets, lots of reviews, decent enough bounce rates and user times (60% and 2:15) based on drupal. Previous updates haven't touched us and an almost identical duplicate (same site compltely different content) of the site targetting a different but related EMD is unaffected which provides a control.
I have seen some discussion on it having to do with link profiles. We did pay some backlinkers to link to us, much more on the site that has dropped, and quite a few for a partial match keyword. I'm supposing this is a lot of the issue. If we try and delete these backlinks will it make the situation better or worse?
I have also notice some duplicate content warnings in seomoz that weren't there previously.
Any ideas?

In regards to diluting your link profile with new and better links is indeed possible as mentioned by Karl. However, this will be a massive job that will take ages to do.
Consider the following: a good standard of having either brand-name or exact match anchor text is about 30% of your overall link profile (I wish I had that article to show you, forgot where it was). Now currently, you have 76 out of 77 links with the exact anchor text of "whey protein". In order to get those links into the 30% of your overall anchor texts in your link profile, you would need to create A LOT of new high-quality links.
My best advice is to either change as many anchor text as you can, or just get rid of the backlink if it's on a low-quality page.

In regards to your ranking being incorrect on SEOmoz, it has happened to me before.
The best way to check what your current ranking are, is to use either incognito mode on Chrome (Ctrl+Shift+N) or "private browing" on firefox. By using either one, it ignores whether you are logged into gmail or not, as well as cache and a bunch of other things.
Otherwise you could also use Rank Tracker by SEO Powersuite, but even then I prefer to just manually check my rankings myself.

Yip, I'd be looking at your anchor text for sure. too much keyword rich anchor text mixed with an EMD is a bad sign to Google. Diluting it with high quality links with varied anchor text (not always with keywords of course) is an option if you can't change the anchor text yourself. Of course quality linkbuilding isn't something that just happens overnight. You really need to work on a linkbuilding strategy that builds natural links.
I agree with you that the site content is not thin, it's quite a useful site. But beware of spam signals like repetitive exact-match anchor text for your internal cross-linking.
I haven't delved too deep, but I noticed on the article "Protein powder and weight loss" you had cross linking with the anchor text "weight loss" 8 times. And I've seen "whey protein isolate" linking many times in articles.
This could be seen as a low-quality signal by Google. You should keep it down to a couple per page, and maybe change up the anchor text a bit. Such as interchanging "Whey Protein Isolate" with "WPI" or "Whey Protein Isolate (WPI)" or interchanging "weight loss" with "losing weight" or "fat loss" etc.

If it's going to be hard to delete or change this anchor text, is diluting it with new better, nice safe links going to help? Or is changing this literally the thing that needs to happen now?
-
thank you very much, those are my thoughts as well. I'm also a little confused here as seomoz is saying we're not in the top 50 but we've "only" lost 66% of our traffic and comparing before and after the same keywords are getting traffic, just less, consistent with dropping rank a bit, but not being wiped out like seomoz is saying. I also rang someone who had never searched our site before just now to ask whether we were on the front page at all and we were.. maybe google is jumping us around intraday?
-
Hi btrr69, by looking at your OSE data every single backlink you have (except 1), has the anchor text of "whey protein". There are a total of 76 links containing that anchor text. I am getting the feeling that you might actually be punished by Penguin.
Anchor text should be super diversified, with only about 30% of total links containing either your brand name or chosen keywords.
If I were you, I would change as many anchor texts on those links as quick as possible.

Hello Karl, thanks, here is a link to some data: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v201/jamtart/pp.jpg - i'll try and keep it off this thread.
Traffic dropped on Sept 29 the day of the update. The dupe content warnings are from Drupal nodes with no content on them and predates this. There is also a Drupal metatag being placed on each page which is being read as duplicate.
I wouldn't call it a thin site at all, we had facebook likes every other day (although seomoz isn't picking this up).. no ads or adwords, no products for sale, just a largish product review site.
-
Hey btrr69...If you put up a link to your site it will be easier for us to analyse the specifics and give a more helpful answer. There are a lot of factors at play, and Google also released another Panda update around the same time as the EMD update which may have affected you. Without seeing your site it's hard to answer accurately.

How can I best handle parameters?
Thank you for your help in advance! I've read a ton of posts on this forum on this subject and while they've been super helpful I still don't feel entirely confident in what the right approach I should take it. Forgive my very obvious noob questions - I'm still learning! The problem: I am launching a site (coursereport.com) which will feature a directory of schools. The directory can be filtered by a handful of fields listed below. The URL for the schools directory will be coursereport.com/schools. The directory can be filtered by a number of fields listed here: Focus (ex: “Data Science”) Cost (ex: “$<5000”) City (ex: “Chicago”) State/Province (ex: “Illinois”) Country (ex: “Canada”) When a filter is applied to the directories page the CMS produces a new page with URLs like these: coursereport.com/schools?focus=datascience&cost=$<5000&city=chicago coursereport.com/schools?cost=$>5000&city=buffalo&state=newyork My questions: 1) Is the above parameter-based approach appropriate? I’ve seen other directory sites that take a different approach (below) that would transform my examples into more “normal” urls. coursereport.com/schools?focus=datascience&cost=$<5000&city=chicago VERSUS coursereport.com/schools/focus/datascience/cost/$<5000/city/chicago (no params at all) 2) Assuming I use either approach above isn't it likely that I will have duplicative content issues? Each filter does change on page content but there could be instance where 2 different URLs with different filters applied could produce identical content (ex: focus=datascience&city=chicago OR focus=datascience&state=illinois). Do I need to specify a canonical URL to solve for that case? I understand at a high level how rel=canonical works, but I am having a hard time wrapping my head around what versions of the filtered results ought to be specified as the preferred versions. For example, would I just take all of the /schools?focus=X combinations and call that the canonical version within any filtered page that contained other additional parameters like cost or city? Should I be changing page titles for the unique filtered URLs? I read through a few google resources to try to better understand the how to best configure url params via webmaster tools. Is my best bet just to follow the advice on the article below and define the rules for each parameter there and not worry about using rel=canonical ? https://support.google.com/webmasters/answer/1235687 An assortment of the other stuff I’ve read for reference: http://www.wordtracker.com/academy/seo-clean-urls http://www.practicalecommerce.com/articles/3857-SEO-When-Product-Facets-and-Filters-Fail http://www.searchenginejournal.com/five-steps-to-seo-friendly-site-url-structure/59813/ http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2011/07/improved-handling-of-urls-with.html

When criteria do you use for external linking?
When linking out to external sources what criteria do you use? Also, do you ever add the URL in plain text instead to conserve link juice?

Google +1 not recognizing rel-canonical
So I have a few pages with the same content just with a different URL. http://nadelectronics.com/products/made-for-ipod/VISO-1-iPod-Music-System http://nadelectronics.com/products/speakers/VISO-1-iPod-Music-System http://nadelectronics.com/products/digital-music/VISO-1-iPod-Music-System All pages rel-canonical to:
Technical SEO | | kevin4803
http://nadelectronics.com/products/made-for-ipod/VISO-1-iPod-Music-System My question is... why can't google + (or facebook and twitter for that matter) consolidate all these pages +1. So if the first two had 5 +1 and the rel-canonical page had 5 +1's. It would be nice for all pages to display 15 +1's not 5 on each. It's my understanding that Google +1 will gives the juice to the correct page. So why not display all the +1's at the same time. Hope that makes sense.0 -
Drupal 1.5 Issue: Taxonomy
Hi there I have a domain which is built in Drupal 1.5 . We managed to redirect all nodes to the actial SEF URL. The one issue we have no is redirecting the taxonomy urls to the SEF url. The obviuos answr is to do a manual 301 redirect n the htaccess file but this will a long process as there are over 500 urls affected. Is there a better way to do this automatically within Drupal? Your thoughts and ideas are welcome.

Can hidden backlinks ever be ok?
Hi all, I'm very new to SEO and still learning a lot. Is it considered a black hat tactic to wrap a link in a DIV tag, with display set to none (hidden div), and what can the repercussions be? From what I've learnt so far, is that this is a very unethical thing to be doing, and that the site hosting these links can end up being removed from Google/Bing/etc indexes completely. Is this true? The site hosting these links is a group/parent site for a brand, and each hidden link points to one of the child sites (similar sites, but different companies in different areas). Thanks in advance!

Is anyone using Media Temple?
I'm looking to move 5 of my sites from Hostgator's shared servers to Media Temple's dedicated virtual servers. Anyone have experience with (mt)? I'm planning on adding a few more sites this year and several things they offer are attractive to me: A (virtually) dedicated environment: Faster websites, better user experience, plus I like having some control over my site's resources Scalability: I can add more resources easily (although not super cheap) Unique control panels for each site: More control for my tech savvy clients. Unique IPs for $1 a month: More linkjuice between my related sites. $50/month is a big jump from my $12/month Hostgator account but I'm thinking it will be worth it. Am I on the right track or is this a fool's errand?

Google rankings tanked....Now what?
We just experience a drop in Google rankings, some pretty harsh, across all of the keywords we have been ranking greater than 50. I’m a noob at SEO, but a technical noob so I started doing my home work. I’ve seen references to the “google dance” and “Honeymoon”, but this hit seems to have effected competitors too. Everyone seems re-ranked with several junk directories jumping up more than I think they should. Has anyone else seen this? Is this more Google algorithm adjustment or a natural settling based on our new SEO attempts? In either case, what should we do next? I know there is a holistic approach and everything is important however, we need bang for the buck at this point to before we start bleeding. One or two next steps? Our industry is residential cleaning and the site is www.bitabliss.com Here is a little history:
Technical SEO | | BitABliss
The site that’s been running for about 2 years. We initially put up a very basic “throw something up” site without much thought of SEO except for some basics and a long tail approach with a blog, FaceBook and Twitter. We launched an updated site on Feb 23. with new theme and this time some, “on page” work to better hit the basics. The site structure was kept the same and we added on some more localized content in hopes to take advantage of local searches. Also, enter SEOMoz to get us tracking things (Yay MOZ). Until yesterday, we had been doing pretty well in some of our target cites even with the more basic site. When we launched the new site focusing on page titles, descriptions and page content, and a few directory attempts. We started to see some incremental growth. It seemed to me that this kind of growth meant that we were doing the right things and doing a better job than some of the other sites. Any way, yesterday we got smacked down. This seems too harsh for a for the slow increases we have seen over the last month. Any thoughts you have would be great appreciated. Thanks! -Shawn1
