Geolocate or not?
-
Hello all,
I'm optimising an e-commerce site which is multilingual (English and Arabic at present). The Arabic content will be on a separate sub-domain to the English. There is a plan to have French content as well.
My question is whether to geolocate the sites in webmaster tools? We don't really want to restrict the audience, but would definitely like to have a presence in the listings for google UK, google US and google Saudi Arabia.
Your advice and thought are appreciated as always.

Hi Bilal,
Google will use hreflang to help determine which pages will show and where.
Geo-targeting isn't much use to you in this instance, as you can only geo-target, not language target - so you'd be determining a physicial location (i.e. a country) rather than particular language speakers.
I've never been particularly confident of the geo-targeting option in Google webmaster tools in any case - it didn't seem to make much of a difference to the sites I saw it implemented on.
Hope this helps

Catalyst Online,
Thanks for your reply. I am aware of the tag you are referring to and have planned to implement.
I guess what I'm concerned about is if I don't Geolocate (I'm using a .com, so have the option), how will Google see fit to show my listings?
We were previously on a .co.uk domain and hence had a strong presence in google.co.uk, but not sure what will happen now.
BTW, we notified Webmaster Tools of the domain name change and set-up 301 redirects and we're still getting traffic, but this has only been a couple of days.
Thanks,
Bilal

Hello Bilal,
Instead of geo-locating through Google Webmaster Tools, use "hreflang" to target your website to visitors in a certain region.
The rel="alternate" hreflang="x" annotations will help Google serve the correct language or regional URL to searchers. More information is provided here http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=189077 and here http://support.google.com/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=182192&topic=2370587&ctx=topic.
Please let me know if this helps.

Google Not Picking Up Posts
I am trying to work out why from March 4th Google is not seeing my posts. Our google impressions have dropped from 8,000 to 40. If you put in the full article name with speach marks it does not find it, and instead shows the home page in google. We have not had any warnings. We did have work done on our site but nothing else i could think of to cause this. Can anyone let me know what may have caused this. All articles are original

How to Boost Your WordPress Website Speed to 95+ (Without Premium Plugins)
I'm reaching out for some advice on improving my WordPress website's speed. I'm currently using a free theme for this fusion magazine and aiming for a score of 95+ on Google PageSpeed Insights. I'm aware that premium plugins can significantly enhance performance, but I'm hoping to achieve similar results using primarily free solutions and manual optimizations.

URLs dropping from index (Crawled, currently not indexed)
I've noticed that some of our URLs have recently dropped completely out of Google's index. When carrying out a URL inspection in GSC, it comes up with 'Crawled, currently not indexed'. Strangely, I've also noticed that under referring page it says 'None detected', which is definitely not the case. I wonder if it could be something to do with the following? https://www.seroundtable.com/google-ranking-index-drop-30192.html - It seems to be a bug affecting quite a few people. Here are a few examples of the URLs that have gone missing: https://www.ihasco.co.uk/courses/detail/sexual-harassment-awareness-training https://www.ihasco.co.uk/courses/detail/conflict-resolution-training https://www.ihasco.co.uk/courses/detail/prevent-duty-training Any help here would be massively appreciated!

Google will index us, but Bing won't. Why?
Bing is crawling our site, but not indexing it, and we cannot figure out why -- plus it's being indexed fine in Google. Any ideas on what the issue with Bing might be? Here's are some details to let you know what we've already checked/established: We have 4 301’s and the rest of our site checks out We’ve already established our Robots is ok, and that we are fixing our site map/it's in fine shape We do not see anything blocking bingbot access to the site There is no varnish or any load balancers, so nothing on that end that would be blocking the access We also don't see any rules in the apache or the .htaccess config that would be blocking the access

IP address geolocation
I would classify our site as large (www.covers.com), with our primary target being traffic within the US (about 70%) but I have a feeling we are limited by our IP being located within Canada. I have changed all the targeting to the US in WMT, but could undertake a project to virtually 'move' the site to a US IP, if there would be benefit. I have found articles coming down on both sides of the issue. Thoughts?

Geolocation has changed targeted domains, or has it?
I am monitoring two domains; a .com and a .com.au in quite a competitive sector (men's underwear online sales) last month the .com site completely dropped from rankings sight in Google International SERPs but, the .com.au site is actually ranking (quite respectively too) in the International/US Google SERPs. I have no idea how, when or why but it's now been the case for two months. Help please?
