Setting up Google Analytics for Subsites
-
I currently have one main .com site and am planning on launching geo-location subsites .co.uk, .com.au, .ru, etc...
Traffic will flow between both sites and some of the content on the subsites will be duplicate and therefore include a canonical tag to the main site.
I want to set up GA to capture who is going to the subsites and vice versa and correctly capture crossover traffic. Any advice on implementing advanced analytics directly (or links to sources that will direct me the right direction for this project)

Hi,
I'm not sure, but what you could do for the third type of links is getting the domain from the redirect you mentioned and create a (virtual) pageview in between. So that you know somebody is redirected before.

Thanks.
That is very helpful. I have 3 different types of links from the main site to the subsite. 2 of them are addressed in the article but the third is not. Do you have any suggestions?
- Links from the menu on the main site to subsites ==> We need to add the onclick="_gaq.push(['_link', ... to enable the cross site tracking.
- Play picking during play confirm ==> We need to add onsubmit="_gaq.push(['_linkByPost', this]);" to our postback on the page.
- Play picking using 302 redirect when the play.aspx request page is loads ==> Here it's not clear what we should do to handle the cross site tracking when a user is moved from site to site using an http redirect. (The 302 redirect is being implemented because for business reasons we need to redirect users to different sites based on their location and we don't want Google to think we are being manipulative)

Hi Sara,
I would suggest taking a look at the cross domain tracking functionalities of Google Analytics, the documentation about this could be found here. By adding an extra filter to your Google Analytics profile you're able to prepend all the URLs with the current domain. This will give you the ability later on to analyze the traffic crossing the sites.
Hope this helps!

Does Google need Analytics installed to create metrics?
Hi Mozers, Does Google know time on site, number of page visits, bounce rate, etc. even if Google Analytics is NOT installed? Does it measure all that stuff anyway, and if you install the GA code on your site, that is so that YOU can see those metrics? OR can Google only see those metrics if you install GA on your site? Thanks! Jane

Collecting post codes / zip codes in Google Analytics - Terms of Service
Hi Mozzers, Just reading up on Google Analytic's Terms of Service and wondering if collecting post codes / zip codes (from a website's 'Find my nearest...' tool) adhere's to the following: "You will not (and will not allow any third party to) use the Service to track, collect or upload any data that personally identifies an individual (such as a name, email address or billing information), or other data which can be reasonably linked to such information by Google." What do you think?

Do modal pop-ups impact the Google Analytics of the host page?
We have an instance of a page where visitors can click a button to start an interactive quiz. The quiz pops up in a modal window that references another domain (the interactive content provider). Will the person completing the quiz in the modal pop-up still be counted as an active visitor on the original host page during the time they are completing the quiz?

Google Analytics is treating my blog like all the content is just on the home page.
Hello all, I installed Google Analytics on a main website and a blog (blog.travelexinsurance.com) While it appears to be tracking correctly (and when I test it in real time it shows that I'm visiting) but it is treating the entire blog as though it's one page. So I can't see data on blog post X. All I see is that X visitors came to my blog in aggregate. So I see blog.travelex.com has 999 visitors, but it doesn't show that /travel-luggage got 50 visits, while /insurace-tips got 75 and so forth. I assume I screwed up the tracking somehow, but can't figure out where I went wrong. Tracking on the main domain works just fine. It's specific to the blog.

There's a topic of a sexual nature in our talk threads trending on Twitter right now which is driving a lot of traffic and I'm wondering whether Google have censored the keyword. The next few keywords are our name and variants of. Could there be some other reason why this word isn't showing up? Has anyone else experienced this?

AW Stats vs Google Analytics
Hey Moz Community, I am looking to get opinions on the best practice for analytics/traffic analysis. From experience I know that AW Stats reads high and Google Analytics reads low for traffic for reason in this article http://www.smartz.com/blog/2009/01/23/analytic-confusion-%E2%80%93-awstats-vs-google-analytics/ It drives me a little nuts how far off both are for some pages. I have one article that shows 100 views (GA) and AW stats shows 5 times that number of views. Any suggestions or systems you recommend? Thanks
