SEOMoz homepage - the lack of img alt tags
-
This might be a stupid question but the homepage of SEOMoz doesn't have img alt tags on the three feature screenshots.
I've hovered my mouse and looked at the code, the images just have the link to www.seomoz.org/features
Everyone goes adding image tags is key, any reason why SEOMoz don't?
-
Any idea on what this does or how to use it: _cdn="<a rel="nofollow" target="_blank">true</a>"
Trying to find info but can't seem to find anything!
-
You're welcome.
A lot of websites make use of Alt instead of Title for alternative image text, with Alt usually only appearing when images don't, whereas with Title, the alternative text usually appears whether the image is displayed or not.
Have a good day
-
Ofcourse! I kept thinking "hmm why isn't any text appearing when I hover my mouse"
Thanks Simon

Hi Cyto
I've had a look and they do have alt-text on the three feature screenshots. Granted the alt-text doesn't seem to appear when hovering-over, but the alt-text is there. In their respective orders:
- "Link Analysis"
- "Identify SEO Issues"
- "Monitor Changes"
The actual code is:
<div id="<a class="attribute-value">home_border</a>"> <div id="<a class="attribute-value">home_contentC</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">hverts</a>"> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">wrapper</a>"> <div id="<a class="attribute-value">manageC</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">clearfix</a>"> <h1>Effectively Manage Your SEO and Monitor Your Social Media h1> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id="<a class="attribute-value">stars</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">hsprite</a>" alt="" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" /> <div id="<a class="attribute-value">link_analysis_ss</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">span-8</a>"> <a href="[/features](view-source:http://www.seomoz.org/features)"> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id=" <a class="attribute-value">link_analysis_ss</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">sprite-screenshots ss</a>" alt="<a class="attribute-value">Link Analysis</a>" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" />a> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">span-2</a>"> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id=" <a class="attribute-value">link_analysis_icon</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">hsprite icon</a>" alt="<a class="attribute-value"> </a>" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" /> div> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">pull-1 span-6 last</a>"> Analyze links and track key performance metrics in an efficient all-in-one dashboard. div> div> <div id="<a class="attribute-value">identify_seo_issues_ss</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">span-8</a>"> <a href="[/features](view-source:http://www.seomoz.org/features)"> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id="<a class="attribute-value">identify_seo_issues_ss</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">sprite-screenshots ss</a>" alt="<a class="attribute-value">Identify SEO Issues</a>" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" />a> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">span-2</a>"> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id="<a class="attribute-value">identify_seo_issues_icon</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">hsprite icon</a>" alt="<a class="attribute-value"> </a>" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" /> div> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">pull-1 span-6 last</a>"> Identify critical SEO issues and get actionable recommendations. div> div> <div id="<a class="attribute-value">monitor_changes_ss</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">span-8 last</a>"> <a href="[/features](view-source:http://www.seomoz.org/features)"> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id="<a class="attribute-value">monitor_changes_ss</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">sprite-screenshots ss</a>" alt=" <a class="attribute-value">Monitor Changes</a>" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" />a> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">span-2</a>"> <img src="[http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif](view-source:http://cdn.seomoz.org/img/transparent.gif)" id="<a class="attribute-value">monitor_changes_icon</a>" class="<a class="attribute-value">hsprite icon</a>" alt="<a class="attribute-value"> </a>" _cdn="<a class="attribute-value">true</a>" /> div> <div class="<a class="attribute-value">pull-1 span-6 last</a>"> Automatically monitor changes to your rankings and take control of your organic traffic. div> div> div>

Should your homepage target your most important keyword?
I was looking at the title tags/keywords of the top ranking sites for my most important keyword phrase, and I noticed all the pages that were beating us were homepages. Our homepage is not optimized at all. It's very generic, because 1, my boss wanted it that way, (but she's not married to it) and 2, I built out landing pages for all our keywords. For the really, really competitive keywords, I can't get my landing pages high enough. My homepage however, according to OSE, is on par with the other sites, especially the page. I included the screenshots of it, just in case, my analysis was way off. But, those are the top 4 sites and I'm on page 3. Here's my questions: Should I optimize my homepage for the keyword phrase, if it's our most important one? If I do that, what should I do with the landing pages? Lastly, if you look at the screenshots, is my analysis correct that we aren't woefully behind all four of these people (we're kempruge.com)? I know I'm asking on a lot on this one, but it's a pretty big decision for us. I could really use the help making sure it's the right one. Your time is much appreciated, Ruben voVxURN fwoVUBE aKWJQ4E

Best practice for heading structures on Ecommerce homepages
I have been doing some research into the heading structures of some of the top selling online stores in the UK. One thing that has come to my attention is that many of them do not have H1 elements on their homepage. I am presuming that because they are targeting their own brand on the homepage that they feel no need to have a H1?? Examples are: http://www.boohoo.com/ http://chainreactioncycles.com/ http://www.jdsports.co.uk/home Some of them even use the logo as a H1 such as http://www.missguided.co.uk/ Does anyone think that using the logo as a H1 would have any negative effect from a search engine perspective? Look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Slow loading Homepage - loads twice (Pingdom)
Thanks for looking. Site is: www.vintageheirloom.com My homepage seems slower than the rest of my pages, & erratic load times, 2 -6 secs. It looks like it loads twice when run through Pingdom tools (http://tools.pingdom.com)? On the results page I can see the html script object at the top http://www.vintageheirloom.com/ and then reappears at the bottom again. Load time 1st is approx 761 ms then 1.35 seconds. I've looked for images that might be loading the site, I saw this as a reason, but I can't see this being the problem. I've seen mention of looking in my .htaccess file if that is the cause. I've removed chunks of code to see any changes but couldn't spot any, still loads html script for www.vintageheirloom.com twice. Can we use SEOMOZ to get insights/data on the members of a twitter list?
It would be so useful if we could get insights into the members of a twitter list in the same way we can get statistics on the people we search through the "search twitter bio" options (following/followers/RTs/Social Authority/etc). This is possible through the twitter api but it limits to 20 list member which is useless. Anyone know of a solution? Thanks!

Anyone using Followerwonk? Email said SEOMOZ just aquired it.
Hi, So looks like SEMOZ just aquired followerwonk.com and that I have free access to this system. I had a quick look at it and it seems like it's an analytics program for twitter. Anyone used it? And can you use it to help grow your list? Cheers

New Social Media Site + META Tags for User Profiles
I'm currently in the process of building a social media site and was deciding whether or not to add META descriptions/keywords for individual user profiles. After reviewing Facebook, I noticed that in the META Description field, user profile pages just inherited the values for Facebook (there were no META keywords); and, when I reviewed LinkedIn, there was no META description/keywords at all. After this investigation, I figured it might be a question best addressed to the SEO community. With that, what do you guys think? If you were building a social media site, would you have META description + META keywords for each user's profile? If so, what would be the best way to optimize the individual profiles so they rank highly within the search engines?

Should your company's name be in the title tag of your website?
First of all, I would like to provide some background information. Our company is small. We are just now getting into SEO research and have been improving over a couple months of research. We are somewhere in the 500,000's in the world rankings. From what I understand, the title tag provides a great amount of weight to whatever keywords you set up. The words in the title tag are supposed to represent keywords that you want to be high in the search engines for, correct? Well, in our title tag, we have the name of our company. To me, this is a waste of space. No one is going to go to Google and search for our company's name because we are not that widely known. Looking back at our search history for customers, there has not been a single search for the company name. What someone is telling me, is that when we put our link somewhere, having the name of our company in the title tag strengthens the "link juice" we get from those links. Is this correct, or is it worth trashing the company name for another keyword to optimize?
