External Linking Best Practices Question
-
Is it frowned upon to use basic anchor text such as "click here" within a blog article when linking externally? I understand, ideally, you want to provide a descriptive anchor text, especially linking internally, but can it negatively affect your own website if you don't use a descriptive anchor text when linking externally?
-
It all depends - if you were to create 100 external links, each with a back-link that said "click here" and they all were linking to the same page, it takes on an unnatural feel and at that point, Google might cast an eye over what you are doing.
Remember, Google looks for diversity in link pages and anchor text. They also look for links to (ideally) form a natural feel as part of content.
Keep it realistic and you will be fine.

It wont negatively affect your website, but people are visual learners and skim content online, and providing a visual cue as to the precise nature of the link they are following from your website might build more trust to you ultimately in your visitors' eyes.

I don't think it will have a detrimental effect to our own website. However, I would like to see from other point of view: having a descriptive anchor text to external links may help your website campaign.
Descriptive anchor text is after all aimed to persuade / impulse our visitors to click on the link. If it's not really appealing, then they probably won't bother to click.
Given due to external links, making our visitors clicking the links will definitely bring benefit to that outsourced links: traffic. However, if those website are critical (and ethical enough), they will notice than some of their traffics are referred from your site. Moreover, if your site has even bigger influence to theirs, they will start investigating your site, whether yours is legit, content-related, has good credibility, etc.
If positive, then they may acknowledge you better and may even propose a mutual co-operation / agreement in the long terms.
That's just my opinion though however

Multiple links from same domain (different pages) considered in credibility of backlinks?
Hi, Let's say there are multiple backlinks from different pages of same domain to different pages of other domain like below: Website A: Page 1 -----------> Website B: Page 1 Website A: Page 2 -----------> Website B: Page 2 Do the pages of Website B pages will get backlinks authority equally or they don't get much backlinks impact as they have multiple backlinks from same domain? There were old school stories that Google ignores second link from same domain.....etc... So, please suggest on this. Thank you. Note: The question is NOT about content relevancy or domain authority score of the backlinks.

Do the external links at footer menu take away PR or Linkjuice?
Hi all, We have some external links on our footer menu. I'm just trying to figure out whether these take away pagerank. What if they are follow or nofollow? How fair to have DMCA badge with link at footer? Will this hurts? Thanks

Do more internal links from sub-domains to domain (website) hurt rankings?
Hi, We have nearly 10 sub-domains. Couple of our website top pages including homepage have been linked from every page of these sub-domains; from footer or top menu. Is this kind of linking is bad as per Google? What is the right way of linking between website and sub-domains?

Would 37,000 footer links from one site be the cause for our ranking drops?
Hey guys, After this week's Penguin update, I've noticed that one of our clients has seen a dip in rankings. Because of this, I've had a good link at the client's back link profile in comparison to competitors and noticed that over 37,000 footer links have been generated from one website - providing us with an unhealthy balance of anchor terms. Do you guys believe this may be the cause for our ranking drops? Would it be wise to try and contact the webmaster in question to remove the footer links? Thanks, Matt

Are press releases a form of paid links? Matt Cutts on paid links
According to Matt Cutts latest video about paid links everything that allows Page Rank to pass through is considered paid link and is against Google's rules. I think this is geared more towards directories but aren't 90% of press releases just another form of paid links? You pay to game the system, to manipulate the search engines. He goes on to say that if you "nofollow" the link there will be no penalty. It will be interesting to see how much their revenues will decrease if all press release websites & article distribution networks will have to nofollow their outbound links. He makes it very clear that paid ads are different because they do not manipulate search engines in any way. What do you guys think?

Too Many On-Page Links
After running a site analysis on here it has come up and said that I have a lot o pages with too many on page links and that this might be why the site is being penalized. Thing is I am not sure how to remedy this as one page that says it has 116 links is this one : http://www.whosjack.org/10-films-with-some-crazy-bitches/ Although there is only one link in the body Then again our home page has 165 http://www.whosjack.org which again it says is too many. The thing is is that surely it doesn't count on links all over the page as other wise every news homepage would be penalised? For example what would happen here on this home page? : http://www.dazeddigital.com/ Can anyone help me see what I am missing? Are there possible hidden links anywhere I should be looking for etc? Thanks
