Are reputable local directories effective link building resources for high rankings in local search?

I'm working on a local search campaign. Generally, the first thing I do is add the site to all of the local directories that I know of. I'm curious, with penguin updates, whether or not this is still an effective strategy for local search.

Andy, Thank you for the response. I'm using suggested local directories on the SEOMOZ Pro Directory list. I'm guessing that all of those are trusted sites. I am still curious as to whether or not the directories actual help or boost rankings though.

I have never had a bad response with a local directory yet and is something I do for clients looking to enhance a local profile. As for what you get in terms of SEO benefit, a lot will depend on the directory and the type of listing you get with it.
Local directories I have never found harmful as long as you choose the best of those that are available to you.
However, I never stop just at local so it is hard to say just what you will get exactly.

Hello, we have been link-building to the home page for some time now. We believe that we have better on-page SEO than some of our direct competitors. We want to rank for “SEO Agency Cardiff,” but despite building backlinks, building Nap, and writing content marketing, it will not get onto the first page of Google. Link Building Tactic Advice
Today, a link builder contacted us, and in exchange for a link to his site he will be willing to give us a blog post on his sites.. The sites he is willing to give us a Blog post/links on are all around PA 25 and DA 25.. The site he wants us to link to has a DA of 78 Can someone advise us on any positives or negatives. on positing on his lower quality sites in exchange for links to his quality site.. Should we go ahead and partner with them ?

Contests For Link Building?
I have been seeing a trend that a lot of people are hosting contests with prices in the high end XXX $ or low end XXXX $ as the first price. Usually it's arranged via a number of sponsors and you'd have to link to all the sponsors using the keywords given. Some people provide a text file with everything pre formatted to make it easy. I have seen several sites paying 50$ to be part of a contest so that they can get some link juice from participating sites. Since the prize money is huge, many people will participate and will get lot of links. There was a person who built an entire business out of this (Not naming him. He's still doing the same thing but with a small twist). What's your take on such strategies? Don't you think it's high time Google caught these sort of "link schemes"?

Link building and directory links to a new site
I have three new sites all hosted on the same server in the same public html folder and each site is in a different folder inside the public html folder. These sites are a listing of live music venues in different cities in Texas. Should I link these sites together to increase page rank to each other and also put key search phrases in the anchor text and place these links in the text in the center of each page of each site to make the links more effective? Also, because the sites are about a year old they don't have many inlinks yet. If i submit them to about 50 directories will Google not like this because there are way more directory links than natural links? I've been told that it is trouble to have more than about 50% directory links compared to natural links. Thanks in advance for your answers! Take care,

Has anyone seen positive results from using Submiteaze to submit to directories? I know an SEM agency that uses it for clients' link building campaigns, but I don't know if it is worth buying. Are there better alternatives?
I would like to start a link building initiative at my company for a new website, and would like to know if the value of the links built using Submiteaze would be worth the money.
