Google + Local for client with no physical address and multiple phone nos
-
Hi I have a client who is service-based and goes out to his local customers' homes to conduct his business. He operates from home so does not want to show his home address, he also has a number of local telephone numbers that divert to his mobile. I was wondering which type of category to put his business into, my ideal would be local business but for that I need to add the address the question is can I still hide the address the way you used to in the old format or is there other recommendations to optimise his local placement?

Hi AllieMc,
Yes, it sounds to me like your client is a local business owner who needs to comply with the hide-address rules, which are still applicable to the new Google+ Local. However, before he jumps into this, he has got to pick a single, local area code number to publish officially with on his website and his Google+ profile and all the citations you may be building for him. Not multiple numbers and no toll free numbers. Just one number that matches his city of location.
Now, in the case of home based businesses that do not wish to publish their address anywhere on the web, there are some things you need to know.

If the client is unwilling to publish his complete NAP (name, address, phone number) on his website (typically in the footer and on the contact page), then I feel this may place him a little behind the game vs. competitors who are willing to publish their NAP. The irony of this is that Google doesn't want the complete NAP in Google+ for service area businesses, but it is my belief that having it on the website can still be important. If he just can't publish it on the site, then he needs to know this may place him at a bit of a disadvantage. There have been no formal studies or whitepapers done on this. I'm speaking from intuition.

The inability to include an address will also bar the client from being able to create citations in certain places. He can, however, still create some citations. Here is a great article on this topic of which directories allow you to hide your address:
Other than this, just be sure that the local campaign follows Google's guidelines. One thing that service radius business owners are sometimes confused about is whether they are able to create Google+ Local pages for all of the cities they served. The answer is, of course, a resounding 'no'. Just the one listing, based on the home address, but with the address hidden. And, they need to understand that their hopes of breaking into the Local pack of results will center on their city of location - not other cities where they serve. To gain visibility for those other cities, their efforts and goals will need to be organic, rather than local, in 9 out of 10 cases.
Hope this helps!

Google Carousel - What Should We Now Be Doing Differently?
Google Carousel is rolling out for even more topics. How does it affect or change tracking in Google Analytics? For example, if I am in the Carousel and someone clicks my listing, then Google completes a search for my property… then the searcher clicks through to my site organically. Will I know that someone originally clicked the Carousel or will I have no idea and simply see a Google organic click? Should we be optimizing our Google+ Places listings differently? How does this change our own organic keyword targeting? In other words, if I am in the Carousel should I go after a different keyword organically? Does anyone know how many people are clicking into the Carousel vs. the organic listings or even pay per click below? Searchers behavior will be altered because of this change. What say you all? Local SEO: Links with the citations so should I slow down?
Hello, There seems to be some nofollow and dofollow links building as I add structured citations. Is this a reason to slow down the building citation process if you want the links to count? Do they help organic SEO?

Proximity for local intent searches
Based in the UK, I can see clear differences in search results for terms that Google considers have local intent, based on location. I'm interested in the community's experience of how far in distance local intent reaches. Does it depend on the search?, e.g. If I search for restaurant will it have a different local intent radius to a coffee shop etc.

Local SEO: How to optimize for multiple cities on website
Hi, I couldn't find any reference to this, so if the answer is already here, I would appreciate a link to the answer. That said, my question is this: When a local business services a large geographic area, I wanted to know how to optimize for the multiple towns? I already have the main city in my title tags, but there are at least 40 areas that surround this town. Should I have a "Services Area" page, and place all the towns there, or should they all be in the footer? I saw this one guy - in the same niche who put all the towns in his meta keyword section - but I think that's incorrect, especially since Google doesn't look at that particular meta tag. Any help would be appreciated.

Google Places with locations inside of a mall
I got a great question from a franchise owner today regarding Google Places for his business. His businesses are all in malls. With Google Places there is an emphasis on using consistency and full contact details, as we well know. The issue is his locations are in a mall and don't have a physical address to receive mail or verify their address. Is there a way to leverage Google Places in this kind of situation, or do you just use the general mall address?

Do citations in foreign languages help for local SEO in English?
Hi, All! If you're doing trying to get a foreign site (in English) to rank for local SEO in that country (in English),.do citations in the native language help? Google does seem to know that the business name in English and the foreign language are the same (e.g. if you search in English, it will return some results in the foreign language with the business name in the foreign language bolded). And addresses Google can also tell are the same, as evidenced by Google map searches in both languages pinpointing the same location. So - are citations in the foreign language relevant to help the page rank higher for a local query in English? Any thoughts? Thanks, Aviva

Ranking Penalty in Google Places for Primary Cell Phone Number?
Say a business runs out of a home (so, technically, the address of the business has a land line). But the business owner works outdoors all day long and so really runs his business off his cell phone. Is it OK in Google Places to list the mobile phone as the primary contant number, and list the home phone as a secondary number? Or will Google penalize the business's ranking in local search results for using a cell number as the main number?
