Will the link back to my site be worth building them one for free?

To clarify, I am in the running to be awarded a project by a college in my area.
They want to pay NOTHING for me to have my designers and developers build a site for them. If I don't want it several other companies will do it (or so they say).
This site will be used to promote an event that is held annually in different major cities around the world. (online registration, pay online, etc)
The weird part to me is the governing body of this event has the hosting city build their own website and promote the event on their own so every year they reinvent the wheel with a whole new website (not smart I know).
**Is this worth it for me? **

The attendees will be almost exclusively from colleges and all have edu. websites and emails they will be using to register.

There will be about 1,000 attendees

I do get a link giving my company credit for building the site at the bottom of every page BUT.....

I realize any love my site gets from the search engines will be next to nothing, right? (its a BRAND new domain and by the time it start getting any recognition the event will be over and it will be abandoned plus it will be watered down bcs they can tell its a site I built).
Is it possible that when one of the attendees tweets or links to the page my site could get a little love?
If I impress my contact that is sending me this 'business' I know it will turn into more paying work..............
**Thoughts? Opinion? Is there a silver lining i'm missing? Is this a dumb move? **

I am meeting w them tomorrow afternoon and that is a GREAT idea. I will propose a link at the bottom of the home page to 'site credits' and that page will have information about my business and what we do and how we were honored to be a part of the event, etc.

With the information provided it doesn't appear to be a fair exchange and the SEO benefit to you, I'm imagine, would be minimal.
Branding benefits and network opportunities are limited to a footer link - who's going to find that? How will it grab peoples attention? Why don't you have a whole page about your business with a paragraph of text, links and images - this would be better than a footer link (for SEO) and better branding and networking. Make sure that the page isn't an orphaned page (i.e. needs to be linked from main navigation or a high level page).

Personally, I would do it, as I'm always on the lookout for extra ways to market my services. There's also the networking factor, which can reap an endless stream of benefits down the road.
But all in all, there are too many factors to give a definitive answer. For example, how much time will the project require? Can you afford to work X number of hours knowing that the payoff may be gradual or may not come at all?
I would also avoid the link at the bottom of every page.
And on the flip side, there's the Harlan Ellison philosophy that seems to work for some folks

The SEO benefit seems minimal, so I would make the decision based on #RCS. Does this enhance your brand? Can you brag about it? Will it lead to referrals? Hopefully some other web designers can weigh in on when it's worth it to design and build a site for free; it seems to me that if you're not an up-and-comer trying to build a portfolio, it's rarely worth it.

Should ebook content be a download or hosted on site for SEO?
We have written ebook(s) on subjects of interest to our prospects (B-C market). We have taken many recurring questions asked over the years plus helpful graphics and put into short 12+ page ebooks. After filling out form to receive ebook- (first name & email on form) for any option below- Should we: a) send them to Landing page to download ebook to their desktop? b) send them e-mail with link to download ebook? c) send them directly to page on our site with the ebook content? d) something else? My thoughts are to do c) which will put content on site, though 'protected' via gate. This way the search engines can crawl the content. However, if that content is not directly reachable through menu will that degrade the importance of that content? Obviously we want to provide good, helpful information to prospects. We would also love to benefit from that content from a Search point of view if possible. Anyone have experience with this through A/B test or otherwise? Thanks, Steve

what is the best way to buy expired similar domain names and point them at your site to garner link juice? there are lots of domains with good links pointing to them that are now expired and those links would be in the same subject as your site and a good addition to your current links. I've heard that 301 redirected links only pass half value but even that would be a great addition to your domain authority if you could purchase those domains and 301 them to your site? what are everyone's thoughts on this and how do i go about this? Need help linking Youtube account to Google+ profile? (please read description, thank you)
Our Youtube was managed by a SEO company. We are no longer working with them, but separated on amicable terms. I want to link our youtube account to our company owner's personal google+ profile. However, when I try to do so, the only option Youtube allows me is the former SEO company's google+ account as the only link option. Can someone tell me how I can link our youtube account to our company owner's g+? I can still contact our former SEO company if the need to 'release' ownership. Thank you!

Link juice retained when using nofollows?
Is it still true that when linking to other sites with nofollow links, the juice is retained on your page? Or is the juice lost, but just not passed on to the other site? Affiliate links with hash tags
We are setting up a brand new internal affiliate program for our site. When creating the affiliate URLs I learned that we can use hash tags (#) instead of question marks (?). I remember Rand did a White Board Friday years ago (http://www.seomoz.org/blog/whiteboard-friday-using-the-hash) saying that this was a better way to build affiliate URLs because it basically acts as a stop and/or canonical for the URL. We already have canonical tags but I was thinking of using this in hopes of getting a little extra juice from the affiliate links. Questions: Does Google still treat hash tags the same as they did 3-4 years ago? Does anyone see using hash tags as worse than something else, like a question mark? Thanks!

Is submitting a single piece of video content to a lot of different video sites spam?
In the past I have been told that you can use tools like Tube Mogul to auto submit a single piece of video content to lots of different video sites and that it is not considered spam. After watching Rand's Whiteboard Friday I am more skeptical of this tactic. Here are my list of reasons why doing this would and wouldn't be considered spam. This is not spam because: These video sites are individual sites with an individual user base. This is spam because: Google does not want duplicate content of any kind in the SERPs. I leaning towards spam but have seen this be very effective in the local space. So I'm torn.
