Open site explorer varied results according to country
-
We have a global team and we have noticed something unusual. When we do a "Compare link metrics" search in Open Site Explorer in the US our client is beating the competition hands down.
When we run the exact same data in Canada, where our client is based, the client has the same metrics, but a few of the competitors numbers are higher.
What could cause this variation? Both accounts are full versions, and not freebies.

Glad to help, Steve! The www would definitely change the metrics you are seeing!

This makes sense. So now, I have typed in two searches.
one with www. for a competing site, and one without the www. and that did show a different result. So perhaps that is our issue.
It is good to know it is not dependent on a location as we have a global client base.
Thanks!

Hi Steve,
Thanks for writing in. You can't really specify localities in the Compare Link Metrics section of Open Site Explorer, but if you are checking your competitors using different TLDs, that would affect the metrics you are seeing for the competitors. If you can give me some exact examples of the sites you are comparing in that section, I can look directly into the issue you are seeing.
Our system isn't set to show different results based on different regions; it just shows different results based on the number of links to a domain, which would change between TLDs since example.com vs example.ca would be considered two different domains.
I look forward to hearing back soon.

Hello Stevej24,
Same things are also happening with me. I found too variation in results in opensiteexplorer in different regions. Maybe they are using some technique like Google to show different results in different regions.
I am also finding a reason and also using pro account.

Sitemap.xml Site multilang
HI all, I have some questions about multilang sitemap.xml. So, we use the same domain subdirectories with gTLDs example.com/pt-br/

example.com/us/
example.com/es/ How should I do the sitemap.xml in this case? I thought of three alternatives: Should I do a sitemap_index.xml to each lang and make categories for these sitemaps? Examples:
http://www.example.com/pt-br/sitemap_index.xml
http://www.example.com/en/sitemap_index.xml
http://www.example.com/es/sitemap_index.xml Should I do only one sitemap_index.xml covering all categories of all languages ? Examples:
http://www.example.com/sitemap_index.xml
http://www.example.com/pt-br/sitemap_categorias_1.xml
http://www.example.com/es/sitemap_categorias_1.xml
http://www.example.com/us/sitemap_categorias_1.xml Should I do a sitemap setting all multilang? <url><loc>http://www.example.com/us/</loc>
<xhtml:link <br="">rel="alternate"
hreflang="es"
href="http://www.example.com/pt-br/"
/>
<xhtml:link <br="">rel="alternate"
hreflang="us"
href="http://www.example.com/us/"
/>
<xhtml:link <br="">rel="alternate"
hreflang="pt-br"
href="http://www.example.com/pt-br/"
/></xhtml:link></xhtml:link></xhtml:link></url> Thanks for any advice.0 -
Off-site company blog linking to company site or blog incorporated into the company site?
Kind of a SEO newbie, so be gentle. I'm a beginner content strategist at a small design firm. Currently, I'm working with a client on a website redesign. Their current website is a single page dud with a page authority of 5. The client has a word press blog with a solid URL name, a domain authority of 100 and page authority of 30. My question is this: would it be better for my client from an SEO perspective to: Re-skin their existing blog and link to the new company website with it, hopefully passing on some of its "Google Juice,"or... Create a new blog on their new website (and maybe do a 301 redirect from the old blog)? Or are there better options that I'm not thinking of? Thanks for whatever help you can give a newbie. I just want to take good care of my client.

Results Pages Duplication - What to do?
Hi all, I run a large, well established hotel site which fills a specific niche. Last February we went through a redesign which implemented pagination and lots of PHP / SQL wizzardy. This has left us, however, with a bit of a duplication problem which I'll try my best to explain! Imagine Hotel 1 has a pool, as well as a hot tub. This means that Hotel 1 will be in the search results of both 'Hotels with Pools' and 'Hotels with Hot Tubs', with exactly the same copy, affiliate link and thumbnail picture in the search results. Now imagine this issue occurring hundreds of times across the site and you have our problem, especially since this is a Panda-hit site. We've tried to keep any duplicate content away from our landing pages with some success but it's just all those pesky PHP paginated pages which doing us in (e.g. Hotels/Page-2/?classifications[]263=73491&classifcations[]742=24742 and so on) I'm thinking that we should either a) completely noindex all of the PHP search results or b) move us over to a Javascript platform. Which would you guys recommend? Or is there another solution which I'm overlooking? Any help most appreciated!

Open site explorer. Possibility to select a time period?
Is it possible to add a time period to the open site explorer? E.g. The external links of other websites grew very fast since February. It would be nice to have a feature with which it is possible to select the time period (from February to today). Without this function it is solely possible to see ALL links of all months and years. I would like to see only the external links since e.g. February. Thanks in advance.

Quoting From Another Part of Your Site
Suppose that you wrote an awesome piece of content and want to feature short segments of that content on your product pages. Is there any risk (such as duplicate content problems) to quoting a paragraph from another page of your site?

Canonical on ecommerce site
I have read tons of guides about canonical implementaiton but still am confused about how I should best use it. On my site with tens of thousands of urls and thousands of afiiliates and shopping networks sending traffic, is it smart to simply add the tag to every page and redirect to the same url. In doing this would that solve the problem of a single page having many different entrances with different tracking codes? Is there a better way to handle this? Also is there any potential problems with rolling out the tag to all pages if they are simply refrencing themselves in the tag? Thanks in advance.
