What's been your experience with profile link-building?

What have your experiences been? Short Term? Long Term? There isn't a lot written about it, and I'm wondering where it falls in the order of things.
I was very hesitant to jump in, but have launched a few campaigns, both for local geo targeting phrases, and national accounts. Surprisingly, I've seen a surge in rankings, but also wonder how short lived they will be.
I've noticed the links still don't come up in tools like open site explorer, but I'm able to find them when searching for the unique username I used while building the profiles.
The sites I'm listing on have no relevance to industry, unless by chance, although the PR's I'm using are all 4 or higher.
Is this considered gray hat?

In theory, you're correct - the premise being they'd not want to risk penalizing innocent site owners.
In reality, Google makes mistakes all the time. Some bounce back, others don't.
Also, Google is constantly changing their rules. And based on rule-changing patterns I've studied over the past several years, if a technique even appears to be in the shady category today, it's very likely to be a primary target tomorrow. Because of this, I prefer to focus on methods and tactics I believe to have a much more resilient long-term potential.

Alan, thanks for your input, it's appreciated. I can imagine the only way you'd suffer for it is Google dropping any kind of juice that your getting from such links. They can't put you in the sandbox, as what would stop competitors from doing that too each-other?

The PRs are all 4 or higher? really? You called Google and asked? Because if you didn't, you're relying on that mythical TBPR (ToolBarPageRank) that is a) wildly inaccurate b) several months old c) a shiny object that routinely causes people to lose focus on what matters regarding SEO.
Whether the boost will stick is not something any of us can know - every site, every link and every market is unique. All I know is in my own personal experience working with clients, it's not a high quality long term strategy, and if it is done, should only be a small portion of the overall link building effort. If too many links come from this source type, search engines will see a big red flag and you will suffer as a result.

It's not relevant to the target web site, but the PR's are all 4 or higher, and do follow's. The anchor links are placed in the bio or signature section.
Again, I was very skeptical before the campaigns started, but wanted to test it out, and so far, the results have been very good. My main question is if this boost will stick.

Consider the source. Is it a profile on a site that's highly relevant to the target web site? Is the link in the profile tagged with a nofollow? How popular is the site the profile is on? How well optimized is the site? How well optimized is the profile page? How far down the link structure is the profile section?
All of these are factors in determining whether it's worth it to even bother if you're just looking for links. And even with all other factors considered, profile pages should always only be considered a minor link building opportunity.

Should You Link Back from Client's Website?
We had a discussion in the office today, about if it can help or hurt you to link back to your site from one that you optimize, host, or manage. A few ideas that were mentioned: HURT:

Site that's 301 redirected is ranking for brand
We own a number of foreign TLD domains for our brand. They are all 301-redirected to our main .com branded domain. One of them is appearing in our branded search results, outranking out main .com page. To be clear, this is despite there being a 301 redirect from it to the .com page. Any ideas on what is going on here?

Disavow links leading to 404
Looking at the link profile anchor text of a site i'm working on new links keep popping up in the reports with let's say very distasteful anchor text. These links are obviously spam and link to old forum pages for the site that doesn't exist any more, so the majority seem to trigger the 404 page. I understand that the 404 page (404 header response) does not flow any link power, or damage, but given the nature and volume of the sites linking to the "domain" would it be a good idea to completely disassociate and disavow these domains?

Technorati links. good? or bad?
Hi all After an unnatural link warning I am about to do my third reconsideration request after having my previous two turned down. I have manually removed hundreds of spammy links (thousands if you include sitewide) and used the disavow tool on hundreds more where I could not get them manually removed. The backlinks I have remaining now all seem to be genuine. There are quite a few backlinks from technorati, I thought these were ligitimet links but am now thinking should I remove/disavow them. Does anybody have any opinions?

Reciprocal Links NoFollow
I am working on the SEO for a company that sells commercial construction materials and I am noticing that the vast majority of the older, authoritative construction related sites and directories require a reciprocal link to be linked to from their site. 1. If I create a reciprocating link, but nofollow/noindex that page, is that seen as blackhat? Will I see any benefit from this over a link passing page rank? 2. Will these reciprocating links hurt me, or are they worth the risk within a young portfolio? I am seeing well ranked sites listed such as justblinds.com, this would imply they reciprocated a link as well?

Links via scraped / cloned content
Just been looking at some backlinks on a site - a good proportion of them are via Scraped wikipedia links or sites with similar directories to those found on DMOZ (just they have different names). To be honest, many of these sites look pretty dodgy to me, but if they're doing illegal stuff there's absolutely no way I'll be able to get links removed. Should I just sit and watch the backlinks increase from these questionable sources, or report the sites to Google, or do something else? Advice please.

Would linking out to a gambling/casino site, harm my site and the other sites it links out to?
I have been emailed asking if I sell links on one of my sites. The person wants to link out to slotsofvegas[dot]com or similar. Should I be concerned about linking out to this and does it reduce the link value to any of the other sites that the site links out to? Thanks, Mark
