Rank #1 for a 110,000/month query search, but barely any traffic?
-
Hi guys,
As it says in the title, we've recently reached the absolute #1 position for a certain key phrase in the travel industry which the Google Keyword Tool tells me averages 110,000 local (165,000 global) searches a month... however we have received barely any traffic at all over the past TWO months for it and I'm trying my best to determine why.
We've checked on multiple different devices with all forms of personalisation off, different browsers, 3G connections as opposed to office Wi-FI etc. and it still returns us as the #1 rank. Meta descriptions and title tags are pretty much pristine if I don't say so myself, however what should be a very lucrative key phrase is currently returning little to no traffic results.
Has anyone had experience in a similar situation to this? Any possible causes that I might be missing?
Would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks.

Hi Peter,
Yes you are correct, with the exact match query it drops down to around 6,000. Still, being the top position for a 6k/month search would seem to be more likely to produce more than the 2-3 visits we are getting so far, right?
Thanks for the help.

Hi Ben,
Change it to exact matches in the adwords keyword tool and see how many searches there are a month. Exact and broad are completely different, my guess is you'll see a dramatic difference in the number of searches.
E.g if the search term for 'cookware' is returning 100,000 broad match searches, it might only be 20,000 for exact searches for that term.
Cheers

Hi Brad,
The query is for broad matches, not exact matches.
Thanks.

Hello Ben,
I'd have a look in your Google analytics under Traffic sources / SEO / Queries. This will show you where on average you rank for that key phrase and how often your site is chosen in the SERPs (CTR).
If your key phrase really does get that many searches you should see a high number of impressions. If you are number one it should also tell you that under 'average position' and if you really are number one for a term with loads of impressions then your CTR must be really low if you're getting low traffic.
I suspect you'll find one of these shows where you have a problem but if your impressions and position are correct then the CTR will be terrible and you need to look at your page title and meta description to see what is putting people off.
Steve

Hi Ben,
Is that 110,000 EXACT matches or are you using BROAD matches when searching for this data?

If website users don't accept GDPR cookie consent, does that prevent GA-GTM from tracking pageviews and any traffic from that user that would cause significant traffic decreases?
I've been doing a lot research on GDPR impact and implementation with GTM-GA for clients, but it's been 12 months since GDPR has gone live I haven't found anything on how GA traffic has been impacted if users don't accept cookie consent. However, I'm personally seeing GA accounts taking huge losses in traffic since implementing GDPR cookie solutions (because GTM/GA tags aren't firing until cookies are accepted). Is it common for websites to see significant decreases in traffic due to too many users not accepting cookie consent? Are there alternative solutions to avoid traffic loss like that and still maintain GDPR compliance? It seems to me that the industry underestimated how many people won't accept cookie consent. Most of the documentation and articles around GDPR's start (May 2018) didn't foresee or cover that aspect properly, everything seems to be technically focused with the assumption that if implemented properly most people would accept cookie consent, but I'm personally not seeing that trend and it's destroying GA data (lost traffic, minimal source attribution, inaccurate behavior data, etc). Thanks.

Why Is My Traffic Going Up But My Alexa Rating Getting Worse?
I am curious why my Alexa rating has been getting worse over the last few weeks. My organic traffic is up, direct visits and social networking visits are up but my Alexa has been getting worse and worse. Is anyone having the same problem? Any feedback would be helpful. Thanks.

Organic traffic vs. GWT data
Hi, how are you? I'm having a question becasue of an inconsistency between the data GWT gives and the one GA gives me. When I see the ammount of clics GWT tells me in february, it says 32850. When I go to Channels --> Organic Search, it says 51014. The difference is really big! Do you happen to know why this huge gap between data?

Improved keyword ranking but less traffic
Hello fellow mozzers! My collegue and I are a bit puzzled in regards to our recent website statistics. In november 2013, we upgraded the technological platform of our website to be fully HTML5 coded, and implemented the schema.org Products scheme to systematically tag all our products on the site. To prevent too much loss of visitors, we created a 301-redirect table from almost all our old URL's to the specific new ones, as we implemented a new URL structure as well. The first few months were bumpy as expected, making a huge drop in rankings before rising up again. Our keyword rankings are better then ever (60% of the keywords in top 3, average competition, 25% more on first SERP) but our number of visits dropped by about 10%. Our bounce rate went down from 20% to 14%, our returning visits are stable, but our new visitors stats dropped by 25% as well. This comparison was made between equal periods in the current year and last year, using organic data stats. (new technical platform vs. the old one) What could be the reason that our number of visits dropped 10% while our keyword ranking is better then ever? We don't have any manual penalties in GWT and can't understand why visits would drop so much while ranking improved. May it be so easy that there's just less search volume on our ranked content or does anyone have other ideas? Thank you all in advance!

Is Google turning Off Webmaster Tools Search data
My Webmaster Tools account has stopped showing data past 9/23, which is a full week old. Typically it is just a few days behind schedule. Is Google cutting this off?

Why did my home page fall off of google rankings?
My home page at www.smt-associates.com has been ranked well for various key word phrases for years. I've tried to optimize it for the search "Crystal Lake CPA Firm" and it always had ranked number 1-2. Now it doesn't even rank in the top 5 pages (actually I don't know which page it falls on). I did an on-page report card and it has an A rating. So, what is preventing Google from ranking my home page on page 1? There's not that much competition so this should be an easy ranking for me. I don't know how ling this has not been listed, but I did modify my site about 12-18 months ago with a new WP theme. Could the theme be the problem?
