Product Page is Battling with Homepage in SERPs

My product page had been solidly in the middle of the first page for months. Now, it is being replaced by my homepage for the same keywords.
I don't understand why this is happening and I'm worried about it, particularly from a business stand-point (we offer a variety of products that appeal to completely different audiences)
In terms of SEO, Is this necessarily a problem? What can I do to ensure that Google recognizes that the content that those keywords are tied to is on the product page, not the homepage.
One thing I did notice is that the 2nd and 3rd most common anchor text for the links to my homepage are the two keywords in question (they are a distant 2nd and 3rd however).
If nothing else, is there a way I can get SeoMoz to recognize the homepage on its page rankings so that my heart doesn't drop once a week.

The product page is http://www.cleanedison.com/courses/bpi-building-analyst and the homepage is http://www.cleanedison.com/
I wouldn't say the homepage is "going" for the same keywords as the product page.
But like I said, the keywords "BPI Certification" and "BPI training" are the 2nd and 3rd (although distant) anchor texts for the homepage.

Can we get some more info on what a "Product Page" is? Is this an actual product or a landing page for products. Maybe creating some original content for this page in the form of videos, tutorials, and manuals wlll help it rank higher.
In terms of separating the products page form the home page. That's going to be a little bit hard, to explain without knowing the site. Is the home page going after the same keywords as the product page?

I have pages that do the same thing. When that happens I work on the page to drive traffic to pages that convert. Sometimes I get sales of unexpected items from this traffic.

Yeah, but the URLs haven't ranked anywhere close to the first page at the same time. It is one or the other, and when one is up there, the other falls off the map.

Nice work. You have two strong pages that are capable of first page rankings. It is possible to have two pages listed on the first SERP. You might be able to earn that as your site increases in strength relative to your competitors.

This is an opportunity of a different kind. You get to show them all of your products. Just be sure that you feature your big money makers prominently on the homepage. People don't mind drilling down if you make the path clear and easy.

If I've decided that my primary keyword for a given product page is the product name, something like 'AquaPower wet and dry cordless vacuum cleaner', can I assume that it isn't worth additionally optimising the page for 'cordless vacuum' as this has a phrase match in the primary keyword? Is it still worth additionally optimising for 'wet and dray vacuum' which has a broad match within the primary keyword or is Google bright enough to drop the intervening word 'cordless' when deciding whether to rank my page? Number of keywords for single page website
Hello, i have a question about keywords in Single page website. For how many keywords should i focus in single page website? For example: In my industry are important 2 different keywords - cabinet making and **made to measure furniture. **Should i focus on both keywords or its better to pick better keyword and focus only for that one (of course including different forms of that word and so on). Page not ranking despite indicators showing should easily be mid-1st page?
I have many years old website selling a service. The main keyword is 47% competitive, and we used to be #1 page 2, occasionally page 1 couple years back. Domain authority is double of any of the competitors on 1st page, followed root domain links is many times that of 1st page competitors, infact against some of them almost 10 times as much, MozRank and MozTrust higher too. Infact, every metric is higher than competition. Only metric which isn't as good is Followed vs NoFollowed links metric, 95% of our links are NoFollowed, but we are still #1 in external followed links. Yet we are stuck on 4th page, and on some localizations we are not even in Top 50. This has happened slowly over time, not a overnight thing. Page we are trying to rank for gets grade A for optimizations, yet we have less significant pages ranking higher for that keyword. Further, newer pages tend to rank better than old ones. The whole site actually ranks quite low and we are not even getting search traffic for long tail keywords.

How do I make sure my homepage ranks better than my 2nd page when I need the same keywords for both? I don't want them competing against each other for keywords.
I seen here on SeoMoz something about more than one page having the same keywords so they don't compete against each other for the same keywords that makes sense to me. But I would like my main page (homepage) to be ranked better over time rather than the 2nd page or do I just not care about the second page ranking at all and don't SEO the page very well? ,Both pages have similar content so I need the keywords for both.
