Not sure which way to go or what to do?
-
Hi there,
I have been a pro member of SEOmoz for a while now but this is my question in the forum and although I have looked through so much helpful information I was wondering if someone could give me some further advice and guidance?
I have a 3 year old ecommerce website personalisedmugs.co.uk which until May 2012 had some excellent growth, we then lost around 50% of traffic due to reduced organic rankings in google. We then noticed a further drop again in September.
From researching information I believe this drop was from the penguin update and EMD update?
Since these updates we have:
*Stopped working with a company in India whom was looking after SEO for us for 18 months
- redeveloped/designed website and upgraded software version
- constantly refreshed website with content as we always have done
- Modified internal anchor text (this did seem keyword rich)
My next steps I believe before giving up is checking our links coming into website?
Is anybody able to please help me with regards to our links or point me in the right direction. I have no idea where to start or what do now?
Someone may see something really obvious so any help or guidance is greatly appreciated to assist me in gaining some UK organic rankings back.
Kind Regards,
Mark

Wow, thank you ever so much for this awesome response Cyrus! There is alot of information you have provided for me to work through, I appreciate your time.
A response to your question, we did receive a unnatural links warning back in 2011, being quite naive to this type of warning we stupidly ignored it
Once again many thanks,
Mark

Howdy,
Most of the major Google updates in the past 12 months have targeted backlinks more than anything else. So while it's always good to look at on-site issues and improve your site in every way, a thourough backlink audit is almost always prudent when you experience a major rankings drop - especially when the drop coincides with known Google updates.
Looking at your links in Open Site Explorer, we find several types of links that seem "suspicious" or "unnatural"
- http://personalisedtshirts.blogspot.com/ (sitewide, exact match anchor text - I highly suspect this is part of a blog network)
- http://www.wokietokie.blog.seo-catalog.com/Shopping/Gifts/ (penalized, deindexed directory)
- http://ww.w.b3directory.com/Business_and_Economy/Marketing_and_Advertising/?p=8 (low quality directory)
Unfortunately, these are the types of links targeted by Google and we often see these lead to penalties and or devaluation.
Have you received any messages/warnings in Google Webmaster Tools? That would be a good place to start. Typically, the best way to recover from this is to perform a complete link audit, then go through the arduous task of trying to get the links cleaned up, submit reconsideration requests, and possibly use the disavow tool.
I've been through it myself with several client sites and it can be a lengthy process the first time you do it. Some tips to consider:
1. What links to look at? First of all, John Mueller of Google recommends starting with the links listed in Google Webmaster Tools, as these are the links most likely to effect your rankings: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UX...
2. Third Party Tools: A couple of companies have developed tools to help identify bad links.
- SEOGadget Link Analyser - http://tools.seogadget.co.uk/ (has a great API - highly recommend this site)
- Link Detox - http://www.linkdetox.com/ (haven't used it, but I've heard decent things)
3. Manual Review - In the end, you're own eye is the best tool you have. You want to look for:
- links with keyword-rich, optimized anchor text
- Comment Signature and Forum Signature links (these are different from the more legitimate forum links)
- Sitewide links, such as in the sidebar or footer
- Obviously paid, or suspicious looking links on low-quality sites
Our friend Paddy Moogan wrote a great guide on how to do this step by step. You should check it out. I also made a video about earning high quality links. It might be worth a look: http://www.seomoz.org/blog/high-value-tactics-futureproof-link-building-whiteboard-friday
It usually takes Google 2-4 weeks to reply to reconsideration requests. In my experience they like to see both a manual effort to clean links, and I've also had success supplementing this with the disavow tool.
Lot's of information here. Hope it helps. Best of luck getting back on track!

Thanks for your answer, how do I work out which ones are spammy or not?

Hi Mark,
Go ahead and check all the links pointing to your website and start deleting all the spamy ones.

Keyword cannibalisation - Any way to find out who is eating who?
I have a question regarding some keywords in my site. For some reason, I am ranking for the wrong keyword in some SERPs or my top page is ranking instead. Example: graphic design is ranking for web design Is there any tool or way to figure out how, why or who is eating each other up so to speak? Would you have any advice or links to good sources on how to resolve this issue so that the correct page shows in search for it's particular keyword? Thanks in advance!

Best Way To Clean Up Unruly SubDomain?
Hi, I have several subdomains that present no real SEO value, but are being indexed. They don't earn any backlinks either. What's the best way of cleaning them up? I was thinking the following: 1. Verify them all in Webmaster Tools. 2. Remove all URLs from the index via the Removal Tool in WMT 3. Add site-wide no-index, follow directive. Also, to remove the URLs in WMT, you usually have to block the URLs via /robots.txt. If I'd like to keep Google crawling through the subdomains and remove their URLs, is there a way to do so?

We just fixed a Meta refresh, unified our link profile and now our rankings are going crazy
Crazy in a bad way!I am hoping that perhaps some of you have experienced this scenario before and can shed some light on what might be happening. Here is what happened:We recently fixed a meta refresh that was on our site's homepage. It was completely fragmenting our link profile. All of our external links were being counted towards one URL, and our internal links were counting for the other URL. In addition to that, our most authoritative URL, because it was subject to a meta refresh, was not passing any of its authority to our other pages. Here is what happened to our link profile:Total External Links: Before - 2,757 After - **4,311 **Total Internal Links: Befpre - 125 After - 3,221

Total Links: Before - 2,882 After - 7,532Yeah....huge change. Great right? Well, I have been tracking a set of keywords that were ranking from spots 10-30 in Google. There are about 66 keywords in the set. I started tracking them because at MozCon last July Fabio Riccotta suggested that targeting keywords showing up on page 2 or 3 of the results might be easier to improve than terms that were on the bottom of page 1. So, take a look at this. The first column shows where a particular keyword ranked on 11/8 and the second column shows where it is ranking today and the third column shows the change. For obvious reasons I haven't included the keywords.11/8 11/14 Change****10 44 -34

I wouldn't think anything of normal fluctuation, but every single one of these keywords moved down, almost consistently 20-25 spots. The further down a keyword was to begin with, it seems the further it dropped. What do you make of this? Could Google be penalizing us because our link profile changed so dramatically in a short period of time? I should say that we have never taken part in spammy link-building schemes, nor have we ever been contacted by Google with any kind of suspicious link warnings. We've been online since 1996 and are an e-commerce site doing #RCS. Thanks all!0 -
Best way to address duplicate news sections within site
A client has a news section at www.clientsite.com/news and also at subdomain.clientsite.com/news. The stories within each section are identical: www.clientsite.com/news/story-11-5-2011 subdomain.clientsite.com/news/story-11-5-2011 What's the best way to avoid a duplicate content issue within the site? A 301 redirect doesn't seem appropriate from the user experience point of view. Is applying a rel=canonical <www.clientsite.com news="" story-a-b-c="">to each story within the subdomain news section the best option? They have 100's of stories, wondering if there might be an easier way?</www.clientsite.com> Also, the news pages list the story headline and the first 3 lines of copy. Do these summaries present duplicate content issues with the full story page? Thank you!

Google search result going to a page that I did not put on my site
Hi, I am seeing a very strange result in google for my site. When doing a search for the term "london reflexology" my site comes up 18th in the results. But when I click the link or check the URL it shows up as: http://www.reflexologyonline.co.uk/reflexologyonline.php?Action=Webring This is not right at all. It looks like some sort of cloaking but I am not sure. I am new to SEO and I do not know why goole is showing this URL that does not exist on my site and of witch the content is totally wrong. Can anyone please help with this? See the 2 linked images for more details. It seems to me the site might be hacked or something to that effect. Please help.... jyJdP.png 71Mf4.png

What's the best way to transplant a blogger blog to another domain?
So I have this client who's got a killer blogger blog—tons of inbound links, great content, etc. He wants to move it onto his new website. Correct me if I'm wrong, but there isn't a single way to 301 the darn thing. I can do meta refresh and/or JavaScript redirects, but those won't transfer link juice, right? Is there a best practice here? I've considered truncating each post and adding a followed "continue reading…" link, which would of course link to the full post on the client's new site. It would take a while and I'm wondering if it would be worth it, and/or if there are any better ideas out there. Sock it to me.
