Footer Links Question
-
I work at a web development firm and we put site wide links in each of our clients footers (I know this is awful and I am in the process of changing this) that read "web design by, web development by, hosting by,,,etc". My question is, I am in the process of deleting the site wide links and just leaving the links on the home page, but 1. should I get rid of the links all together, that are on sites that have a pr:2 or lower? 2. should I change the footer links, so they aren't all the same text?

Thanks for the great responses!
For now, I am going to do a rel="nofollow" for all of our clients and slowly over time, change the links, wording and dofollow of the text.

Right now, it looks like your backlink anchor text profile is over-optimized for "website design" (that's the anchor text you're using in the site-wide footers).
As you already mentioned, I recommend removing the site-wide links. For the links you keep on the homepage, I also recommend using brand-related anchor text instead of money keywords (i.e., link with "BlueTone Media" instead of "Website Design").
You're using these links for branding purposes (so it makes sense to emphasize the brand), and if you use brand-related anchor text, you'll be much safer with respect to link-related search engine updates.

I'd consider changing or removing those links ASAP.
Footer links have emerged as one of the primary reasons behind a Penguin penalty. If you have a whole host of site-wide do-follow exact-match external links, then you're running a pretty high risk of triggering a penalty.
So what can you do? You could change the anchor text, as you've mentioned, although I don't think that removes the risk all that much. In Google's eyes (not necessarily yours), it could still view external links that are do-follow and sitting in the footer to be trying to manipulate SEO performance and pass PageRank.
If you're doing it solely for advertising purposes, then I'd consider changing the text of the links and making all of them no-follow. I'd even consider removing the link but keeping the text. However nofollowing the links should be a clear enough indication to Google that you're doing it for advertising and not to manipulate organic search results.

I definitely think you should keep your homepage links on all homepages you design. At the very least its good advertising. Traditionally, I have always had the same text link for my sites, but I recently read an article on this site that said to vary your text link based on the service you provide. So, if you designed a site for a real estate agent, your link would be " Real Estate Web Design by Your Company" I am in the process of modifying my inbound text links to reflect this. I hope this helps.

Should I disavow these links?
Hi all, I have a site that is a year old, we have been building backlinks organically - probably around 50 or so - then almost overnight we had100s of spammy links. Screenshot here: https://ibb.co/cijiub My questions: Should I disavow these? What happens if I don't disavow these? Can I work out where they came from? If I disavow a few of them, is this a token offering to the Google Gods that will lower my risk of being penalised? Thank you. cijiub

How much time does it take for the links to be forwarded to redirected link?
Hi there,
Link Building | | MoeezLodhi
Thank you for taking out some time for this question; I have changed the permalinks last week for a website.. I forgot to redirect old permalinks to the new one.. So I did 301 redirection, it has been 4-5 days since I did that but the links are not forwarded to the new Permalink so far.
How much time should I wait for the links to be forwarded to the new permalinks? Secondly, I am sure I have done the 301 redirect correctly, as when I go to the old url / permalink it directs me to the new permalink. So I am sure 301 is done correctly. Do I need to submit the sitemap again?0 -
Link Bait - How to use it question?
Hi, Lets say you have two pages, one is your money page which contains products etc and the other is a piece of content used for link bait. Say the link bait works well and you pick up lots of links from it, how do you then benefit your money page from this? I can only think of creating an anchor text link from the link bait back to the money page. Is that usually how this process works?

Would you delete the links page ?
I have noticed that more and more of my competitors are removing the links page from their sites. Either that or they are hiding them. I suppose it makes sense because all the links on my page http://www.kerryblu.co.uk/links-7-w.asp are just links to sites that are linking to me. Supposedly there is no worth in this but I'm just worried that I will lose a lot of links if I delete this page and this may effect my currently crappy rankings for the worse. What do you think? Keep the links page or delete it ?

Root Domain Link for Affiliate's Link
It seems my affiliate link: http://www.hrmsplugins.com?partners=21 is not being considered as a "root domain" backlink when this link is used on their website. Is there a reason for this?

Question Regarding Inbound Links
Hi, I have someone who asked me for some advice on his website and I want to make sure I don't give him the wrong advice. Basically he runs a mortgage company and is linked to from a popular estate agent. Now he has over 11,000 links coming from this agent because his link appears on each listing. Someone said that the link should be made nofollow which i understand, but it has been like this for over a year and he is ranking highly for a search term that he cannot afford to lose. Should he just leave it as is or should he change it from dofollow to nofollow. Looking at open site explorer it says he only has 25 inbound links but lists the thousands, but If i remember rightly it only counts links from the same domain once. Hopefully someone can help me with this as I want to make sure what I tell his is correct. Thanks Paul

Using an SEO Agency to build one-way links for you via link exchange
There are a number of SEO agencies which offer link building as part of their SEO offerings. I believe they build one-way links to the client site, by offering another link in exchange to the liking site. So, if the client site is "C", and link is being requested from site "A", the site "A" owner is offered a link from site "B" in return. Is this a good and/or recommended practice?
