How to see a theme ‘/wp-content/themes/’
-
HI
I'm still plugging away at getting to grips with my companies personalized blog. I've been trying for the past two days to upload a theme to my own test Wordpress blog, in order to correct a bug in the companies theme that makes formatting in the Post disappear. The code in the themes CSS file seems to be fine.
Anyhow what I assumed would be a simple step has given me hours of hassle.
I have finally got to the point of uploading an unzipped version of the theme intot ‘/wp-content/themes/’.
Now try as I might my Wordpress admin is completely blind to the fact.
Any attempt at using the Upload facility (which is what I attempted many hours ago) fails. There seems to be no place to say, look out there at my directory - a new original theme - unzipped and ready to go.
Am I missing something very obvious?

Thanks you are quiet right. I was puttiing in the correct structure in the wrong dir
dur!
Thanks so much for your help

I'll take a crack if you trust me enough with your files
You don't seem to be doing anything wrong, but I could always take a second look for you.
Personally I always unzip before uploading to the themes folder, shouldn't make much of a difference though.
-
I don't think you're file is going to the right place.
Default theme has a screenshot here:
http://blog.seoherts.co.uk/wp-content/themes/twentyten/screenshot.png
Your theme should have the screenshot here:
http://blog.seoherts.co.uk/wp-content/themes/ubiquity/screenshot.png
But, there's nothing, and I checked the style.css. It's not there either.
Please check your directory structure again. Also, when you upload a template through the wp-admin, you upload the ubiquity.zip file. WP will unpack it as it should if your folder permissions are ok.
Hope that helps,
Vince

<thread hijack="">Hey Aran, you UK? On twitter?</thread>

nice catch!

Hey, sorry, it's just your directory structure you have a problem with:
/themes/new/ubiquity/*.
Should be
/themes/ubiquity/*.
It was not crystal clear but new was the name for the new theme.
Do that, and it should show up in your admin, if not, let me have your details and ill check it out for you, 2 minute fix.

Maybe I'm missing something, but...
Unzip the file on your computer first, then upload the extracted folder containing the files and sub folders to the themes folder.
-
Thanks for helping Marcus. I'm probably being very obtuse. I've done as you instructed, as far as I could. I couldn't unzip the file in /themes/new/ubiquity.zip. Instead I unzipped the file and copied the extracted files in their directory i.e. /themes/new/ubiquity/*.php files and associated dirs. I then logged into WordPress > Appearance > Themes and searched around but I know I'm missing out something important.
I wish I could get WP to just upload the zip file, but it totally ignores me, it's not even very big!
I think I need a coffee!

Hey Catherine
The basic instructions for adding a new theme manually are here:
http://codex.wordpress.org/Using_Themes#Adding_New_ThemesFrom reading the above, it sounds like you need to unzip the theme so:
- Create a new directory under themes /themes/new/
- upload (or move) your zip file there
- unzip all the files
Then go back into your WordPress admin and the theme should be available to preview or activate in the normal way.
So, it sounds like you just need to create a sub directory, move the zip there and unzip it and you will be good to go but please let me know how you get on.
Cheers
Marcus

Redirect of https:// to http:// without SSL. Possible or not?!
Good afternoon, smart dudes : ) I am here to ask for your help. I posted this question on google help forum and stackoverflow, but looks like people do not know the correct answer... QUESTION: We used to have a secured site, but recently purchased a separate reservation software that provides SSL (takes clients to a separate secured website) where they can fill out the reservation form. We cancelled our SSL (just think its a waste to pay $100 for securing plain text). Now i have so many links pointing to our secured site and i have no idea how to fix it! How do i redirect https://www.mysite.comto http://www.mysite.com.Also would like to mention that i already have redirect from non www to www domain (not sure if that matters): RewriteEngine onRewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^mysite.com$ [NC]RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.mysite.com/$1 [R=301,L]As i already mentioned....we do not have SSL!!!! None of those 301 redirect codes i found online work (you have to have SSL for the site to be redirected from https to http | currently i get an error - can't establish a secured connection to the server ). Is there anything i can do???? Or do i have to purchase SSL again?

Duplicate Content
Crawl Diagnostics has returned several issues that I'm unsure how to fix. I'm guessing it's a canonical link issue but not entirely sure... Duplicate Page Content/Titles On a website (http://www.smselectronics.co.uk/market-sectors) with 6 market sectors but each pull the same 3 pages as child pages - certifications, equipment & case studies. On each products section where the page only shows X amount of items but there are several pages to fit all the products this creates multiple pages. There is also a similar pagination problem with the Blogs (auto generated date titles & user created SEO titles) & News listings. Blog Tags also seem to generate duplicate pages with the same content/titles as the parent page. Are these particularly important for SEO or is it more important to remove the duplication by deleting them? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Do I use /es/, /mx/ or /es-mx/ for my Spanish site for Mexico only
I currently have the Spanish version of my site under myurl.com/es/ When I was at Pubcon in Vegas last year a panel reviewed my site and said the Spanish version should be in /mx/ rather than /es/ since es is for Spain only and my site is for Mexico only. Today while trying to find information on the web I found /es-mx/ as a possibility. I am changing my site and was planning to change to /mx/ but want confirmation on the correct way to do this. Does anyone have a link to Google documentation that will tell me for sure what to use here? The documentation I read led me to the /es/ but I cannot find that now.

What is the best practice to seperate different locations and languages in an URL? At the moment the URL is www.abc.com/ch/de. Is there a better way to structure the URL from an SEO perspective?
I am looking for a solution for using a new URL structure without using www.abc.com**/ch/de** in the URL to deliver the right languages in specific countries where more than one language are spoken commonly. I am looking forward to your ideas!

Duplicate content / title caused by CAPITALS
What is the best way to stop duplicate content warning (and Google classing them as duplicate content), when it is caused by CAPITALS (i.e www.domain.com/Directory & www.domain.com/directory ). I try to always use lower case (unless a place name then i use Capitals for the first letter), but it looks like i have slipped up and got some mixed up and other sites will also be linking to Capitals Thanks Jon

Fixing Duplicate Pages Titles/Content
I have a DNN site, which I created friendly URL's for; however, the creation of the friendly URL's then created duplicate page content and titles. I was able to fix all but two URL's with rel="canonical" links. BUT The two that are giving me the most issues are pointing to my homepage. When I added the rel = "canonical" link the page then becomes not indexable. And for whatever reason, I can't add a 301 redirect to the homepage because it then gives me "can't display webpage" error message. I am new to SEO and to DNN, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Duplicate content handling.
Hi all, I have a site that has a great deal of duplicate content because my clients list the same content on a few of my competitors sites. You can see an example of the page here: http://tinyurl.com/62wghs5 As you can see the search results are on the right. A majority of these results will also appear on my competitors sites. My homepage does not seem to want to pass link juice to these pages. Is it because of the high level of Dup Content or is it because of the large amount of links on the page? Would it be better to hide the content from the results in a nofollowed iframe to reduce duplicate contents visibilty while at the same time increasing unique content with articles, guides etc? or can the two exist together on a page and still allow link juice to be passed to the site. My PR is 3 but I can't seem to get any of my internal pages(except a couple of pages that appear in my navigation menu) to budge of the PR0 mark even if they are only one click from the homepage.
