What is the best way to incorporate region-based keywords?
-
Greetings Mozzers,
I am wanting to get the most "bang for my buck" in regards to region based keyword pages. If I am going after the keyword "Plumber" and the region "San Antonio", would it be best to:
1- Create a San Antonio Plumber page where we can target all critical factors for the region based keyword "San Antonio Plumber"
2- Link every instance of the term "San Antonio" and "San Antonio Plumber" throughout the site to the newly created "San Antonio Plumber" page.Thank you for any advice/clarification on this matter.

Great explanation. Thank you for further clarification!

Yes. You would probably want your homepage to talk about generic plumbing services. Then, depending on the number of locations you have, I would probably link to them on the homepage. Perhaps include a section
Providing pluming services in the following areas:
San Antonio
Dallas
etc. When a user clicks on one of these links from your homepage, they are brought to a landing page for the city - which would incorporate the city and plumbing in the title, description, content, etc. And then IF you have a physical address for each of these locations, you will want to use GetListed.org and link to each of those locations. Company Name - San Antonio, then link to your companyname.com/san-antonio-plumbers
And like you said, you don't want to be spammy with things. So that is why I would just list the city name and not city+plumbing.
If you wanted to take things a step further, you could do generic national homepage, then a landing page by region or state, then a page for each city you serve. The thing to keep in mind is, that if you are going to take this approach, you really should have physical office locations in each of these areas AND you will need to make sure that you create unique content for each of these landing pages, which can be difficult if the services are the exact same... so you may need to spin things slightly different for each location.
Hope this answers your question.

Hey Mike,
'Thank you for responding to our question. For further clarification, if we talked about plumbing on our home page and repeatedly spoke about "plumbing" and we offer these services in "San Antonio, Dallas, Austin, and Houston" Each region would be linked to their respective pages which would be targeted "Region Plumber" or "Plumber in Region". This way the home page is aimed at nationally ranking and sub pages ranked for region based keywords.
Reason I ask about only linking the regions site wide is becasue typically the full region keywords wouldn't show up naturally within content that would be on lets say the home page because then it would be spammy. For example: "We offer, san antonio plumbing, houston plumbing, and austin plumbing."
Right? Or would it be more beneficial to be spammy as the link's anchor text would be the region based keyword pointing to the region based keyword page?
Thanks again for all the clarification. We just want to make sure that our content and internal linking strategies are the right way to get the most bang for you buck on getting the sub region based keyword pages ranked.

You have the right idea.
You want to create a landing page that will be targeting San Antonio Plumber or Plumber in San Antonio. This includes title tag, meta description, and content, as well as having internal links using keywords pointing to this new page.
I would also suggest you use GetListed.org to add, where applicable, your business to the specified business directories. This will also help greatly by specifying your physical address in San Antonio (assuming you have one).
Hope this helps.
Mike

What is the best SEO way to categorize products on an ecommerce site
What is the best way for SEO to set up categories for an ecommerce site selling beauty products. I have currently built my product categories so that if a person looks under the hydration category they find our body lotion, but also if they look under the body section of products they also will find the same body lotion. Is this a problem for SEO? I think it helps the customer find the product.

If concepts are too similar when grouping keywords what do I do ?
I will summarise and then ty to explain : When I group keyword with the keyword explorer if concepts (grouping keywords) that I find are too similar to each other how do I go about it... Ldg me know explain. When google doesn't have enough data to rank a website with content does it only use links ? Let me give you an example. If I take "title tag" as a keyword people have a lots of questions that can be answered which will create numerous concepts. However, let's take "hiking tours Italy" for example. If I go through the keyword explorer or all the other tools existing out there people don't have questions. All I find are variations or synonyms of my keyword and I group by low lexical similarity all the words are going to be very similar. I know that each variation can be grouped and considered a different concepts but writing about various concepts that mean exactly the same thing because of lack of data not very smart and useful... So in that case what does google do, does it rank a website only based on links or schema ? see that it has no way to rank it based on good quality content because of a lack of data (questions that could be answers that would lead to concepts). Thank you,

Homepage not ranking for main keyword, all other pages ranking slightly for their own keyword phrases.
Dear Mozzers, We have an ecommerce website (www.pashmina-boutique.com), we want to rank the homepage for the keyword "pashmina". Problem is, we are nowhere to be found, not even in the top 100 search results of Google. It is indexed, we have no crawl errors, except that we had some problems with our hosting (503's), the crawler of Google bumped in a few of those. And we are fixing it. Our other pages, e.g. (http://www.pashmina-boutique.com/15-white-pashminas) ranks for "white pashminas" 24th and "white cashmere pashminas" 23rd. We have done no linkbuilding, in Majestic, you can check that. We have been offline for a long time (over 6 months) and about 3 weeks ago, we did a redesign (SEO). We relaunched, everything is looking fine except the homepage isn't ranking for the main keyword. Could you guys check it out? Is it over-optimization? It can't be Penguin, Panda would be a surprise too. Or do we still have to wait for the monthly Panda data-refresh? We are currently busy with this issue, once this is solved - that the homepage is ranking - we will start linkbuilding. Mr.1000

Slug best practices?
Hello, my team is trying to understand how to best construct slugs. We understand they need to be concise and easily understandable, but there seem to be vast differences between the three examples below. Are there reasons why one might be better than the others? http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/morning-mix/wp/2014/06/20/bad-boys-yum-yum-violent-criminal-or-not-this-mans-mugshot-is-heating-up-the-web/ http://hollywoodlife.com/2014/06/20/jeremy-meeks-sexy-mug-shot-felon-viral/ http://www.tmz.com/2014/06/19/mugshot-eyes-felon-sexy/

Pages and Keyword Structures, what do you think?
Hi, So I think the best way to do this would be to layout a fictitious example so here it is. Lets say you offer plumbing and painting services and want to start targeting 3 more locations near by. 'Plumber +Location' and 'Painter +Location' both get the exact same search so are equal. I would personally create a new page called '/plumber-and-painter-location/' Then have the title tag contain both keywords 'Plumber and Painter +Location'. BUT... maybe it would be better to have a page for each as this would then be more relevant SEO wise and the customer looking for a painter wouldn't be presented with non-relevant plumbing content. But this does mean now instead of 3 pages you need 6. And if you bolted on another services such as Plastering instead of the 3 pages you need 9. Basically If you offered Plumbing, Painting & Plastering in 3 different locations how would you structure it? Cheers
