How to Recover From Unstable Site Structure History
-
I have a site that has suffered several phases of restructuring. Apparently its owners were unsure as to which direction to take when it came to structuring their content and URL schema and subjected the site to several rounds of poorly thought through implementations (i.e. example.com/content/page-title, example.com/page-title, example.com/"silo"/page-title, etc.), all within a 8 month period. I posted the originating question here on this Q&A Forum. I want to thank EGOL and Cody for taking a stab at it.
What would be a good strategy to help a site like the one I describe above begin ranking again?

Hello Lance, please pardon the belated reply.
Your answer is very precise, thanks for elaborating in such detail. Number 7 - "410 errors are reportedly a bit faster at getting content removed" - is a gem. I see the logic behind # 8, makes lots of sense, and so does number 9. Nice recipe for a recovery.
Again, thank you for the insight.

I have had direct experience with this issue. Here are a few of the things I have done:
- Make sure the current URLs are rock solid and can be long lived.
- Ensure all links to the old structure are completely purged from the content. No good to propping up the old patterns.
- Get a clear picture of the off-site back links. No sense worrying about pages that will have no value. If they changed that fast, there won't be many to worry about.
- For those that have good back links, make a direct 301 redirect to the new page.
- At the point of low ROI, redirect the rest on pattern matches. There could be a couple double jumps here but they won't mean that much anyway given #3. (side note, double jumps leak extra link equity so they should be avoided)
- Ensure your entire site can be fully and easily spidered - before resorting to xml sitemaps.
- Ensure you have a helpful even compelling 404 page that returns the proper status code. 410 errors are reportedly a bit faster at getting content removed so use if you can.
- Remove any restrictions you have in the robots.txt file to the old structure until the 404 and 301s take full effect.
- Submit remove requests to pages and folder. This is particularly important if the site is very large (compared to domain authority) and SEs won't get a full picture of the changes for weeks or months due to low crawl allowance.
Doing these got my sites back on track within a couple weeks.
EDIT: forgot a couple...
- remove any old xml sitemaps
- submit multiple sitemaps for different sections of the site. This helps narrow down problem spots easier.

I am very glad you asked this question. Go to http://distilled.net/u start at a level that is relevant to what you are doing so you can be efficient. However I do recommend finishing the entire lesson plan. This is not a lesson plan for people who don't know anything it is a highly effective lesson plan built for people who work for distilled.net
I've found it the most enlightening and extremely valuable when ever you are on the fence about something. I could not recommend it more

Site name in page title - leave it or remove it?
Hi all, Recently came across some authority blog (quicksprout to be precise) which stated that apart from main page, contact page, about us and some other generic pages, site name should be removed as it might produce duplicate content. example "How to blog | Example Site name" This mostly is the issue with tags and categories pages as it shows on Moz issues. Is that really a problem and site name should be taken off them? Thank you.

Why does Google pick a low priority page on my site?
Hi Guys. One of my pages ranks quite well for "mid year diaries 14-15" on Google. The problem is it's a really specific product page (A4, Hardback, day-to-a-page diary I think). It would be much better for the user to land on our mid-year diaries category, not really deep into the site. Why is Google prioritizing this product page over our general 'mid year diaries' category? Especially when the category would relate to the search more accurately? I work for TOAD diaries and I think our page rank is 10 for this search. Eagerly awaiting some insight 🙂 Thanks in advance everyone! Isaac.

How important are internal pages to overall site rank?
This seems like it should be an easy question (and probably is), but it has stumped a few of us over the past few days. Here's the scenario: We have a site that we are trying to optimize to rank well for a set of keywords. We have a lot of internal pages that are important to users when they visit the site (case studies, for example), but they aren't the pages that we want people to find when they search for our primary keywords. Our question is, is it valuable to optimize those internal pages for our keywords? In other words, will having a lot of internal pages that mention our keywords affect how well our overall site ranks for those keywords? Or, is it only important to have one "hero" page for our important keywords? Thanks!

Time on Site vs Bounce Rate Question
If you follow my questions here on SEOMoz, you know that we have quite a few issues with a particular site. http://bit.ly/RE8V2a Our bounce rate was over 85% for quite some time. We changed the site template and the Bounce Rate has dropped to around 5%, but the Time on Site has dropped dramatically. We were just over two minutes, now we're averaging 1:34. But here's the thing, time spent on the Home Page is averaging 24 seconds! What would you take away from this? Thanks so much!

Mentioning own site and keywords on here?
I have noticed that sometimes posters will talk about a site without mentioning what it is. I assume this is because it one of their clients so there is confidentiality, is there any other reason I should be aware of? its just that as I am new I am usually cautious and am considering posting my own site and mentioning all my keywords to ask for people’s verdict for my on-page SEO. Still working on it, will be ready soon, thought I would ask in advance. Regards,

Site Downtime - Will pages be reindexed?
I recently had site downtime of about 10 days for a site I'm working on which is about 6 months old. There were naturally many page not found errors in webmaster tools as google had tried to crawl the site during the downtime but I've noticed that google has now dropped some of the pages. Are they likely to be reindexed? Google has crawled some of my pages today but as yet the ones that have been dropped from the index haven't reappeared. (the site has been live again for a week). Should they reappear when the pages are next crawled?
