Why should I use Google Tag Manager and will it help rankings?
-
hi all
I have been reading the documentation here;
http://www.google.co.uk/tagmanager/
But cannot find a real GREAT reason for using this and how it will help my fairly small (500/600 visitors/month) hobby website.
Any suggestions help most welcome!
Thanks
Andy

More of a way to get tags published without having to adhere to a strict build schedule most large sites have. Makes you more nimble, not really needed for your one man show.
-
I'm with John. If you're running a small site you probably don't need it. That feature is typically used for much larger sites with a lot of users.
-
Andy, I agree with John. It does not sound like you'd be using a lot of tags from tracking. EG 3rd party tags for A/B Testing, Conversions, Goals and changing them every once in a while with specific goals and not having direct access to be able to do it.

If you're adding and removing publisher tags and pixels all the time, it can make life easier. Especially if you don't have access to the source files generating the site and can't check in code yourself. If you're not editing or changing tags or pixels so much, I wouldn't bother. It won't help your rankings.

Variables in Google Tag Manager
Last week I got a great answer here on how to implement GTM and cross domain tracking, now that we have that in place I'm looking for some more advice 😉 I'm wondering that if we push variabels into the data-layer of GTM, can we actually use those variables in reports as well? Do they get recorded in Google Analytics? I'd like to use some data that we push to the data layer for segmentation purposes. Anybody an idea how to achieve this?

Site account in Google Analytics
Hello I have a question about my site account. On 2014, during a week, my ID tracking of Google Analytics was removed of the site, in this period the volume of users and sessions is lower than the other weeks. But I don't understand why are the sessions and users still reporting during this period without ID Tracking

Does Installing Google Tag Manager Compromise Server Security?
Greetings MOZ community!!! Both my hosting company and developer have told me that in order to install Google Tag Manager it is necessary to disable the rule securing against malicious i-frame attacks in Mod Security and that this would leave the site (we operate on a virtual private server and out hosting company is InMotion Hosting) extremely vulnerable to attack. I can't believe that Google would write code that could allow potential security issues? Is this true? Does anyone know of a way to install GTM while maintaining site security? What functionality will we lose if we choose to stick with the old version of Google Analytics rather than upgrade? Thanks everyone!!!

Improved keyword ranking but less traffic
Hello fellow mozzers! My collegue and I are a bit puzzled in regards to our recent website statistics. In november 2013, we upgraded the technological platform of our website to be fully HTML5 coded, and implemented the schema.org Products scheme to systematically tag all our products on the site. To prevent too much loss of visitors, we created a 301-redirect table from almost all our old URL's to the specific new ones, as we implemented a new URL structure as well. The first few months were bumpy as expected, making a huge drop in rankings before rising up again. Our keyword rankings are better then ever (60% of the keywords in top 3, average competition, 25% more on first SERP) but our number of visits dropped by about 10%. Our bounce rate went down from 20% to 14%, our returning visits are stable, but our new visitors stats dropped by 25% as well. This comparison was made between equal periods in the current year and last year, using organic data stats. (new technical platform vs. the old one) What could be the reason that our number of visits dropped 10% while our keyword ranking is better then ever? We don't have any manual penalties in GWT and can't understand why visits would drop so much while ranking improved. May it be so easy that there's just less search volume on our ranked content or does anyone have other ideas? Thank you all in advance!

301 redirect visible on Google.
Hello, This is a strange one for me. We have 301 redirected our .com domain to the .co.uk domain. The strange thing is that if you gogole the .com domain (theloanengine.com) there is a result with the website description. If you click on the result you are redirected tot he website homepage. One other thing: I've discovered this 301 issue because Google Analytics started to show me a few days ago referrals from the .com domain. I don't know if these things are connected. Cornel

How do I best segment tablets on Google Analytics
I would like to find a way to best segment out my tablet traffic to measure performance; however I'm finding that there are road blocks. It doesn't seem that device operating systems or screen resolutions have clear cut differences in the tablet/mobile versions. Has anyone here found a good way to create a "tablet" segment in Google Analytics? Right now I'm having to lean on solely the ipad traffic to get indicators of tablet performance. Thanks!
