Best Site navigation solution
-
Hi there,
We are getting our website redesigned and would like to know whether to increase the links on our site wide navigation or not.
At the moment we have around 30 links from the navigation. We want to use exploding navigation menu and increase the links to our most important categories. Say if we increase to 60-70 would that be alright. (what will be the highest we can go for)
At the moment categories that get links from navigation are ranking pretty good. If we increase would we loose those rankings.
What will be the pros and cons of increasing navigation links?
Second question we are also adding fooer links to top 10 categories in the footer. Would this be ok as far as seo and google concerned.
Many Thanks

The link limit is 100 suggested by matt cutts.
No it's not The 100 link limit suggestion was removed a while ago, though it's is indeed best not to go wild with it.
But the more pages that you link from your home page and back to your home pge the better the home page will rank.
This isn't really true either. If that were the case I could just make a site with 1,000,000 pages all linking back to the homepage and expect to rank. Whereas actually the only way I'll get value to flow back up to the homepage is to attract links to these 1,000,000 pages from external sites.

if yo havemnt already ready this article and play with the calculator -
The more link on a page the less value each one carries. For a visualisation check out the images here.
So going from 30 to 80 is obviously going to devalue the authority of each link, however it should mean there are less 'clicks' the bots have to go through to get to all your pages so may increase the number of pages indexed.
Navigation links are (apparently) often recognised by Google Bot anyway, and the links from them are treated differently to links within content.
If it's going to be a better user experience by having these links then I'd definitely go for it as I don't think it will have a big negative impact (I have sites with over 100 nav links and it gets crawled fine and ranks well).
As for the footer links, traditionally links in footers haven't carried much value (having been spammed in theme marketing) but again it should be fine to have.
You could also start coding your page with HTML tags using things like nav and footer, as I anticipate that links and content in these new section types will eventually have SEO implications a little down the line.

Managing website content/keywords for wordpress site
We are in the midst of redesigning our website and have been working with freelance blog/content writers to increase the unique content on our site. We are finding it increasingly difficult to manage the topics/keywords as we continue to expand. Googledrive and google spreadsheets have been our primary tools thus far. Can anyone recommend a good tool that would allow us to manage content and blog posts for our site?

Using content from other sites without duplicate content penalties?
Hi there, I am setting up a website, where i believe it would substantially benefit users experience if i setup a database of information on artists. I am torn because to feasibly do this correctly, i would have content that is built from multiple sources, but has no real unique content. It would have parts from Wikipedia, parts from other websites etc. All would be sourced of-course. My concern is that if i do this, am i risking in devaluing my website because of this. Is there a way i can handle this without taking a hit?

How to determine if my site map needs work?
I recently spoke to a consultant at a search conference who took a look at my site map and mentioned it looked like google would have a hard time crawling the site and indexing new pages and changes. I am managing an ecommerce site with a bunch of products, however, I am not an XML expert by any means so i'd appreciate any advice on what to look for in the site map that would possibly be affecting googles ability to crawl/index.

Will launching this site get my E-commerce site penalized?
Hello.. I am wondering if you guys think launching a site like this is a good or a bad idea. All of the links on it go directly to the exact corresponding page on the ecommerce site. Do you think Google will penalize my site for launching sites (i have many other domains that i will be setting up similar to this) like this? Thanks...

What can this charity site do to improve SEO?
Hello wise ones, We have been working with the charity Volunteers of America to create a new site for their car donation program at carshelpingpeople.org They are a national charity with extensive local programs run by regional affiliates, so the site is divided into a small national section linked to Regional Affiliate sections. You get to the regional sections either by entering your zip code or clicking on your state in the bottom nav of the national pages. Right now we have developed regional sections for Michigan, Nevada, Maryland, Washington D.C., New Jersey, Delaware and the Philadelphia area. The site is about 2 1/2 months old, and while our conversion rate is pretty good (7%) our organic search ranking isn't improving as quickly as we'd like to see. Car donation is a very competitive space, and we would appreciate any advice on how to improve the SEO of the site. Thanks so much.
