How many related products should maximum I have on the product pages?
I see a lot of conflicting answers on many blogs. Hope that someone can help me out! -
I try to keep my related products in the same category, because the way I see it when someone is looking for a wedding dress, they rather see more wedding dress suggestions than jumping to accessories. The accessories may be added to the suggestion on the checkout page (I'm looking into that at the moment).
I'm going to take crusader's advise and ask different opinions and do some testing to see what works better.
Thank you both for taking the time to reply.

Are these complementary products or substitute products.
Good idea... like "accessories". That related list could be pretty long and still be a tight fit.
-
There is also the idea that you don't want to overwhelm your customer with too many options.
heh.... I agree... I hate when the recommendations are crap. I'd rather see two tightly related products than a hundred dumb ones. I think that they need a relevance score and cut off the list when it falls below a certain level.

How are the related products decided? Are these complementary products or substitute products. Are they grouped by a category or by user actions (viewed together).
To further use Amazon as an example; if you look at books compared to bridal gowns (I assume this is something related to your industry), you can see that books are displayed by those commonly bought together and gowns are displayed by those also viewed by customers (or possibly purchased instead of).
They really have no shortage of products in any category as far as I can tell, and they also list products carried by third-parties. I can only imagine that this is a bit of a larger scale than most people will be working with. I am in no way an expert on this matter, but I'd just suggest maybe getting a few users opinions. Poll your customers and see what they say. Also run some A/B testing and measure the results.
Additionally, without details as to what specific products you are selling, it will be hard to find a more definitive answer since all industries vary.
-
Funny how you mention Amazon, because I actually followed their lead on adding as much as possible, but just making sure that they are relevant products from the same category and that I stay under a 100 links per page.
On several blogs I read that it should be a maximum 4-8 products and I think that that isn't much. Maybe if you don't have the horizontal scrolling arrows, then that amount would be understandable, but I do have these arrows just like Amazon does.
I'm only doubting myself now, because a friend SEO told me that I have way to many related products.

I'd be interested in hearing what you have found out so far in your research.
Amazon is famous for recommending products and their related products span pages. There is also the idea that you don't want to overwhelm your customer with too many options. I'd say the best way to know for your industry is to first research what your competitors are doing, and then build some tests around that to see what works for you.

Ecommerce product page duplicate content
Hi, I know this topic has been covered in the past but I haven't been able to find the answers to this specific thing. So let's say on a website, all the product pages contain partial duplicate content - i.e. this could be delivery options or returning policy etc. Would this be classed as duplicate content? Or is this something that you would not get concerned about if it's let's say 5-10% of the content on the page? Or if you think this is something you'd take into consideration, how would you fix it? Thank you!

Optimizing a product category vs. a bespoke content page
Hi there, I work for a furniture retailer in the UK and I have a question about ranking for search phrases. Say I'm looking to rank for the keyword phrases: 'Tempur mattress' and 'Tempur mattress liverpool' and I have a category at: www.mysite.co.uk/tempur/ which list all of our mattresses, would I be better trying to optimize this page for those key phrases or would I be better generating a new page, say, www.mysite.co.uk/tempur-mattress-liverpool.html Thank you for your input.

Will changing order of bullet points in product descriptions add some uniqueness?
We write our own unique product descriptions and have a unique product video for each color variation and multiple unique product images and display seperate user reviews per color variation. We prefer to have seperate product pages for each color variation for several reasons (targeting color searches and user experience seeing all color variations when browsing category pages). Product descriptions of color variations are quite similar.

I was thinking about spinning dynamically order how bullet points of product descriptions are presented to add some more uniqueness. I am not expecting a massive impact, but do you think this increases a bit googles perception of page uniqueness?0 -
Page Analysis - Helping Product Pages Outrank Search Results Pages
Hi! We have a lot of our search results pages that have been indexed and outrank our product pages and in some instance the actual product pages barely show up at all. Here is an example query that includes our brand name: http://goo.gl/cgB6W So, we have loads of actual product pages, video pages, etc that should be showing up here, but are not and this is just one example. Unfortunately, there are a LOT of these Search Results pages out there and utlimately we would love to de-index them altogether, but it's going to have to be carefully done. So, was wondering if anyone would want to check out one of our product pages and give any feedback as to what we could change to possibly improve rank or to make them more search friendly or hopefully to help them rise above these indexed search results pages? Here is an example product page: http://goo.gl/2R4IT Thanks!! Craig

Writing Service/Product Descriptions
Hi, I work for a site that allows people to book a variety of different services in different locations (mainly hair and beauty related). The site is still in development so I can't link to it I'm afraid. My colleague is about to start writing these descriptions for each of the beauty salons we have signed up and I thought I'd take the opportunity to check what everyone else thought about these descriptions. As far as I'm concerned, a near perfect example can be found at http://www.toptable.co.uk/fishers-in-the-city We have about 100 words at the most, so I was thinking that as long as we get in the name of the salon, the location (being more descriptive than the general area our services search function allows for) and the USP of each salon - their specialty services. Is there anything else you'd include? Foremost, I want this to be as descriptive as possible to offer more detailed information about the salon. Thanks!

Relating forum discussions to improve internal linking
Hi all, I have a matter i would like a discussion about, since I am looking for a good solution. First the case: I have a site with a large community based discussion board. We daily have 40 to 80 active forum threads with average of 200 posts. As it is right now each thread page shows, at the bottom of the thread, the 20 threads with latest activity. From a SEO point of view this is not the best solution, since all thread pages passes link juice to the latest 20 threads. However, the threads change daily so the juice is sprayed around all over the place. What I want to do is related forum threads, such that each thread at the bottom shows up to 10 threads which could be of interest to the reader. In this way one thread will have more or less the same threads at the bottom at all time, unless the relevancy is better for other threads, causing som minor changes to happen over time. The question is, how can one do this? In the backend, the forum has two tables. One holding threads and one holding posts relating to the threads. All in all the system has 66.500 threads, and in total 469.000 posts. Every thread has a title, and the posts are of varying length. The threads have categories, but they are not so distinct that a thread in one category can not be related to a thread in another category. So I would like to make the relevancy from the title of the thread and the content of the forum posts. As of yet I have not come up with a good solution, and i will look forward to reading any feedback for this. I will answer any questions as fast as possible, to get a good discussion goint here. Best regards, Rasmus

Related products - random products or static
Hello, I was curious about where to get related products from. Currently I just grab some random products from the same category. Would there be any benefit to always linking to the same related products on a product page? Thanks

Best Layout for Product Page SEO
Hi I am looking to revamp my website and would like to know your views on the best product layout for SEO - in particular if it better to have tabulated content like play.com http://goo.gl/4xdqp or non tabulated content like Amazon. http://goo.gl/cojKj Are there any pros or cons to each approach? I believe tabulated looks better and is easier to navigate but do the engines see this as hidden text? I have been told this is an issue with expandable divs. Many thanks David
